    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    VINICIUS, CANTOR DO SUBMUNDO

n the preface to the inaugural book of Marcos Vinicius Faustini, Luiz EduardoSoares says: ―The movement of Faustini’stext is sinuous as his urbantrajectories, and devious as his existential journey‖. This statement opens quiteprovocative perspectives on the phenomenological conception presentFaustini’s narrative. This paper analyzes how Faustini creates a narrator/actorwho, instead of writing the city, writes himself on it. With this performativemovement, the author contrasts the common tendency to divide the urban spacein center x periphery, city x slum, hill x asphalt. Using the mythology of Afro-Brazilian religions, I analyze how the narrator/actor ofGuia Afetivo da Periferiaincorporates features of the Orixá Exú and consubstantiates the cityphenomenologically

    No full text
The present work is in the field of medieval studies, as well as in the field of semiotic studies, and has as its main objective to analyze the resonances of troubadour literature in the poetry of Vinicius de Moraes, a Brazilian poet and composer. Initially, we will make a panoramic study of the work of the author and a survey of his substantial criticism. In the second chapter, we will present the main concepts of the General Theory of Signs, the theoretical-methodological considerations used in our analysis. Posteriorly, we will discuss the main characteristics of the Troubadourism, guided by the medievalists Spina (1956), Martins and Nunes (2014) and Maleval (2002), in addition to the contributions of the poet and essayist Paz (1994). We will also discuss the presence of Neotrovadorismo in Brazilian art, as well as the studies about these updates. Finally, we will analyze the marks of troubadour literature in the poetry of Vinicius de Moraes, based on three aspects: the dialogue between the poems of the author and the songs of the lover, demonstrated in the analysis of the poem Romanza; the recreation of the songs of love in the texts of the poet, analyzed in the Soneto de carta e mensagem; and, finally, we will examine the presence of the remaining symbols of the medieval barcarolles in the poetry of Vinicius de Moraes, from the poems Mar and Marinha.

Contact www.RPBCWD.org for further information.Stormwater ponds remove phosphorus through sedimentation before releasing captured water downstream. Internal loading can impair net phosphorus removal but is understudied in these highly modified systems. Using a combination of methods, we assessed the prevalence and potential causes of sediment phosphorus release in urban ponds. In a three-year, 98-pond dataset, nearly 40% of ponds had median water column total phosphorus concentrations exceeding the 95% confidence interval for runoff values (0.38 mg/L), suggesting widespread internal loading. In a subsequent intensive monitoring study of four ponds, strong stratification prevented spring and summer diurnal mixing, resulting in persistent hypolimnion anoxia (<1 mg/L dissolved oxygen). Incubated sediment cores from seven ponds demonstrated high anoxic phosphorus release. Sediment analysis revealed high labile organic and redox-sensitive phosphorus fractions with release potential at anoxia onset. Our analyses suggest phosphorus accumulated in stormwater ponds is highly sensitive to internal loading, reducing net removal and contributing to downstream eutrophication.Minnesota Pollution Control AgencyNational Science Foundation (grant number 00039202)Taguchi, Vinicius J; Olsen, Tyler A; Natarajan, Poornima; Janke, Benjamin D; Gulliver, John S; Finlay, Jacques C; Stefan, Heinz G.
