    An Annotated Dataset for Extracting Definitions and Hypernyms from the Web

    This paper presents and analyzes an annotated corpus of definitions, created to train an algorithm for the automatic extraction of definitions and hypernyms fromWeb documents. As an additional resource, we also include a corpus of non-definitions with syntactic patterns similar to those of definition sentences, e.g.: "An android is a robot" vs. "Snowcap is unmistakable". Domain and style independence is obtained thanks to the annotation of a sample of the Wikipedia corpus and to a novel pattern generalization algorithm based on word-class lattices (WCL). A lattice is a directed acyclic graph (DAG), a subclass of nondeterministic finite state automata (NFA). The lattice structure has the purpose of preserving the salient differences among distinct sequences, while eliminating redundant information. The WCL algorithm will be integrated into an improved version of the GlossExtractor Web application (Velardi et al., 2008). This paper is mostly concerned with a description of the corpus, the annotation strategy, and a linguistic analysis of the data. A summary of the WCL algorithm is also provided for the sake of completeness

    Soundscape assessment of a monumental place: A methodology based on the perception of dominant sounds

    Some monumental sites have unique soundscapes that deserve to be managed not only by their tourist and cultural value, but also for enhancing the visitors’ overall impression. These sites can include a multitude of sound sources within a variety of different locations with geometrically different spaces in size and shape, so that the soundscape assessment could be quite challenging. The hypothesis of this study is that regardless of the complexity of sound sources comprising a given acoustic environment, the perceived soundscape quality is driven primarily by the evaluation of the subjectively dominant sounds. This hypothesis was tested in a field study conducted in a monumental site with historical relevance located in a semi-natural environment (the Alhambra of Granada, Spain). The main finding was that, for a given location, the higher the percentage of visitors reporting a pleasant sound as dominant, the higher the reported soundscape quality and overall impression. Moreover, it was found that: (i) the sounds of birds, water and visitors (voices and footsteps) are the sounds primarily reported as dominant, (ii) the throngs of visitors (human sounds) negatively affect the soundscape quality, (iii) natural sounds increase the reported pleasantness, especially water sounds, which significantly improve the perceived soundscape quality. The practical implication is that, with appropriate information on subjectively dominant sound sources to prioritize corrective actions, soundscape management and its enhancement will require much less time and operational effort than other options for soundscape assessment based on the use of extensive questionnaires

    First evidence of the B 0 → J / ψ ω decay is found and the B s 0 → J / ψ η and B s 0 → J / ψ η ′ decays are studied using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb -1 collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. The branching fractions of these decays are measured relative to that of the B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0 decay:frac(B (B 0 → J / ψ ω), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 0.89 ± 0.19 (stat) - 0.13 + 0.07 (syst),frac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 14.0 ± 1.2 (stat) - 1.5 + 1.1 (syst) - 1.0 + 1.1 (frac(f d, f s)),frac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η ′), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 12.7 ± 1.1 (stat) - 1.3 + 0.5 (syst) - 0.9 + 1.0 (frac(f d, f s)), where the last uncertainty is due to the knowledge of f d / f s, the ratio of b-quark hadronization factors that accounts for the different production rate of B 0 and B s 0 mesons. The ratio of the branching fractions of B s 0 → J / ψ η ′ and B s 0 → J / ψ η decays is measured to befrac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η ′), B (B s 0 → J / ψ η)) = 0.90 ± 0.09 (stat) - 0.02 + 0.06 (syst)

    Protein Radicals in Versatile Peroxidase [Running title]

    9 p.-4 fig.-4 tab.Lignin-degrading peroxidases, a group of biotechnologically-interesting enzymes,?oxidize high redox-potential aromatics via an exposed protein radical. Low-temperature EPR of Pleurotus eryngii versatile peroxidase (VP) revealed, for the first time in a fungal peroxidase, the presence of a tryptophanyl radical in both the two-electron (VPI) and one-electron (VPII) activated forms of the enzyme. Site-directed mutagenesis was used to substitute this tryptophan (Trp164) by tyrosine and histidine residues. No changes in the crystal structure were observed indicating that the modified behavior was due exclusively to the mutations introduced. EPR revealed the formation of tyrosyl radicals in both VPI and VPII of the W164Y variant. However, no protein radical was detected in the W164H variant, whose VPI spectrum indicated a porphyrin radical identical to that of the inactive W164S. Stopped-flow spectrophotometry showed that the W164Y mutation reduced 10-fold the apparent second-order rate constant for VPI reduction (k2app) by veratryl alcohol (VA), compared with over 50-fold reduction in W164S, revealing some catalytic activity of the tyrosine radical. Its first-order rate constant (k2) was more affected than the dissociation constant (KD2). Moreover, VPII reduction by VA was impaired by the above mutations revealing that the Trp164 radical was involved in catalysis by both VPI and VPII. The low first-order rate constant (k3) values were similar for the W164Y, W164H and W164S variants, indicating that the tyrosyl radical in VPII was not able to oxidize VA (in contrast with that observed for VPI).
