DOES FEDERAL FUNDING ADDRESS FUNDAMENTALS? EXAMINING THE EQUITY EFFECTS OF TITLE I ON STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

    No full text
This dissertation examines the equity effects of Title I funding on student achievement in Broward County Public Schools, one of the largest school districts in the United States. Title I, established under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) of 1965, aims to address educational disparities by providing financial resources to schools that serve economically disadvantaged students. Despite over five decades of federal intervention, significant achievement gaps persist, particularly among marginalized populations. This study investigates the effectiveness of Title I funding in improving student outcomes in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics during the period 2016–2020. Using a quantitative research design, this study analyzes data from Title I and non-Title I schools to determine the relationship between funding levels and student performance. The analysis incorporates multiple regression and hierarchical linear modeling (multiple regression) to explore the moderating effects of student demographics (e.g., race, gender, socioeconomic status) and school-level factors (e.g., location, chronic absenteeism). Results from this study contribute to understanding how federal funding influences educational equity and identify conditions that optimize its impact status) and school-level factors (e.g., location, chronic absenteeism). Results from this study contribute to understanding how federal funding influences educational equity and identify conditions that optimize its impact. The findings reveal that while Title I funding provides critical resources, its effectiveness is influenced by contextual factors such as demographic characteristics and school-level variables. This study underscores the need for targeted interventions and strategic resource allocation to maximize the benefits of federal funding. The implications of this research inform policymakers, educators, and stakeholders about best practices for reducing achievement gaps and promoting educational success and equity. By focusing on Broward County Public Schools, this research offers insights into the challenges and opportunities for reform in large, diverse districts. It contributes to the broader discourse on equity in education, emphasizing the importance of sustained, data-driven approaches to addressing systemic disparities in student achievement

    Interpretação Bachelardiana do Rig-Veda, IV-19 / A Bachelardian Interpretation of Rig-Veda, IV-19

Palavras-chave: Os quatro elementos; Imaginação; Devaneio   Abstract   Based on Bachelard’s point of view, we will analyze the hymn IV-19 of Rig- Veda, dedicated to Indra, one of the most important gods of the Indian pantheon. The French philosopher proposes a poetic of reverie, in which he re-interprets the ideas of Empedocles of Agrigento, Greek pre-Socratic  thinker. The fundamental notion of his reinterpretation is in the four elements (fire, water, air, earth) as a kind of archetype. The “power” of the poetry, in terms of beauty and expressivity, essentially would depend on the right use of the elements and their combinations. A talented author knows  how to do it. Our analysis intends to find a “truth”, hidden in the poem, by Bachelard’s theory.   Keywords: The four elements; Imagination; Reverie

Factors Affecting Students' Capabilities to Pursue a STEM Field

abstract: This paper explores factors to study why the number of students in STEM are not as high as they could be. Based on both Veda and Soumya's personal experiences, factors were chosen to understand their impact on whether a high school student would choose a STEM major in their college of choice, which could lead them to having a career in STEM. The factors explored will be location, grade level, school, parent/guardian involvement, teacher involvement, media influences, and personal interest. Data was collected through surveys sent to both high school and college students. The high school data came solely from schools in the Phoenix area, whereas college students' data came from across the world. These surveys contained questions regarding all of the above factors and were crafted so that we could gain further insight into each factor without producing bias. Each factor had at least one personal experience by either Veda or Soumya. Many of the survey responses gave insight to how and why a student would decide to pursue STEM or why they did pursue STEM. The main implications derived from the study are the following: the importance of a good support network, active parent/guardian and teacher involvement, and specifically active science teacher involvement. Data from both college and high school students showed that students highly valued a science teacher. One recommendation from this thesis is to provide a training for teachers to learn about how to connect concepts they teach to real-world applications. This can be administered through the district so that they may bring in anyone they feel is qualified to teach such topics such as industry professionals or teachers who specialize in teaching STEM. The last recommendation is for parents to participate in a workshop that will inform them of how to be more involved/engaged with their student

Pragmalinguistic Aspect of Interrogative Speech Acts in Discourse of “Rig Veda”

    No full text
The interrogative speech acts presented in the linguistic material of the “Rig Veda” — one of the most ancient and culturally significant works that were a manifestation of ritual and mythological discourse, are researched. The language of Vedic texts is considered from the standpoint of the functional approach as a pragmatic system for which such communicative characteristics as intentions and illocutionary power of utterances are relevant. The system of norms and ideas that govern speech activity in the Vedic ritual interaction is taken into account. It has been proven that interrogative speech acts are one of the most important pragmatic elements of this type of discourse. The novelty of the research lies in the fact that all the interrogative structures of the monument extracted as a result of a continuous sampling are studied for the first time from the point of view of pragmatics, taking into account communicative intentions. Various types of questions are described and analyzed, including interrogative constants, interrogative directives, including questions with secondary illocution, as well as proper interrogative sentences. The author comes to the conclusion that, in addition to non-specific pragmatics for a given linguistic material, interrogative sentences in the text of the Rig Veda contribute to the realization of the magic-incantatory function of speech. The results are valuable both for studying the named type of discourse and for clarifying the understanding of the text of the monument and Vedic culture as a whole

"Stoberskiade", or stickers as a literature-distribution platform

    No full text
Contemporary experimental writing often directs its attention to its writing space, its medium, the material on which it is presented. Very often this medium is meaningful and becomes part of the work – the printed text transferred to another media context (for instance, into a traditional book) would become crippled and incomprehensible. Literature distributed on stickers is a form of writing that is divided into small fragments of texts (a type of constrained writing), physically scattered in different locations. One of the newest challenges in literature are books with augmented reality, AR, which examine the relation between the physical (the medium) and the virtual interaction. Sticker literature is a rather simple analogue form of augmented reality literature. The stickers have QR codes or web addresses printed on them, so the viewer who reads/sees a random sticker in the public space can further explore the text online. The medium is even more varied and nuanced. The viewer can read other parts of the text on photographs (the photograph being another medium) of other stickers placed in different locations. The author will discuss the use of stickers throughout literary history, beginning with 20th century French situationists, through different textual strategies applied by visual artists and ending with literary forms such as the Polish sticker biography Stoberskiade (2013). The author shall try to explain why experimental writers decide to use this form, discuss how the text is distributed and received and how the city space is used in such projects
