Pragmatic Considerations in Mixed Music: a Case Study of La Rage
With access to powerful real-time DSP languages now easier than ever, the new generation of mixed music composers are able to manage both sides of the coin: they have the programming skills and the compositional concerns that were traditionally the responsibility of two different persons. This brings more and more sophisticated integration of technical resources and compositional gestures. A good example of such integration is the author’s piece La Rage. In the light of general comments on the seamless integration of technology in this piece, the author, by discussing how compositional and technical concerns interact in his process of creation, tries to pinpoint key considerations that help him achieve this. He proposes two major categories, portability and adaptability, and explains how they were addressed in this specific work
Truth and untruth: Louis-Ferdinand Céline's Voyage au bout de la nuit and the memory of the Great War 1914-1918
This thesis examines Louis-Ferdinand Celine’s 1932 novel Voyage au bout de la nuit as a rewriting of his memory of the Great War 1914-1918. It seeks to resolve the truth problematic posed by the inversion in Voyage au bout de la nuit of Celine’s experience in the war, primarily the transition from Celine’s heroism in the war to his fictional self-portrait as the coward, Bardamu. It seeks to clarify the role and value of Celine’s fictional witness to war by placing the novel in a broadly developed context of the war and its commemoration. A major premise of this thesis is that Celine was traumatised by the war and that his rewriting of his war experience is informed by his need to break free of traumatised memory through the creation of a new, literary narrative of his personal past. By drawing on the literature of trauma and survival, as well as on studies of the Great War and other wars, this thesis succeeds in establishing that Celine was, indeed, traumatised by his war experience and succeeds in showing the many ways in which this trauma shapes Voyage. It also provides a thorough account of how Voyage as literary artefact engages with the memory of the Great War and how it functions as witness to war and the consequence of war. It brings us ultimately towards the dynamic of accusation which lies at the heart of Celine’s traumatic memory of the Great War and which underlies its keynotes of irony, satire and invective. This thesis is multi-disciplinary in its approach, drawing on historical, biographical, psychological, and literary studies. It provides an important contribution to Celine studies, but also to studies of the Great War, the memory and literature of the Great War and to studies of twentieth-century trauma, memory and identity
Over the past decades, ICTs have permeated every facet of society, with a particularly pronounced impact on higher education students. This study delves into the Internet-mediated interpersonal relationships of students at the University Complutense of Madrid, the representation of habits and the use of ICTs. By means of an online survey, data were collected from a total sample of 2,893 participants spanning various disciplines, ages, and academic programs. The findings reveal gender and age-based disparities in preferences for digitally mediated relationships, as well as dysfunctional patterns associated with digital usage that manifest differently across age groups. Students predominantly express a penchant for being consistently connected to the internet or doing so only, when necessary, with a minority indicating a lack of enjoyment in digital connectivity. This study has allowed the identification of a digital landscape characterized by hyperconnectivity and digital resignation, the latter emerging as a noteworthy trend in the daily lives of university students as it may be linked to dysfunctions arising from ICT use.
The relationship between photography and ethnography in anthropological studies, albeit ancient and deep, is uncertain and complex. Photography has been increasingly used in anthropological researches but it´s potencial as something beyond illustration and it´s interaction with the Other as a technique is very little explored. This research is dedicated to the analysis of this relationship by taking the work of Pierre Fatumbi Verger, his life and legacy. A French man, rooted in Bahia, Brasil, in the decade of 1940, Verger is known worldwide for his work as a photographer as well as for his etnographic studies. However, the reason of this recognition is undefined and examining the reason for these indefinitions can be a fruitful field of reflection concerning ethnographic researches, especially when related to the photographic universe. The Pierre Verger Foundation is the institution that hosts his photographic and ethnographic collection and it´s also where the field research of this work took place. Through the field research combined with the readings of photographs related to candomblé and it´s manifestations in Africa and Bahia, a photographic analysis methodology was created that privilege interaction and dialogue as a way to build definitions about ethnography. By the contact with the Foundation, it´s users and it´s available photographic collection, this research intends to reflect about the ethnography and the creation of an ethnographic view in direct relation to the exercise of photography
The article examines the religious discourse on the novel as it manifests itself in an edifying novel of the late eighteenth century, Le Comte de Valmont, ou les égarements de la raison (1774), written by the “antiphilosophe” author Philippe-Louis Gérard (1737-1813). This epistolary novel is one of the few works of the time to criticize with such violence the novelistic genre. Far from being confined to traditional attacks on the morality of the novel, the criticism of Gérard puts particular emphasis on the pernicious effects of imagination as exploited by the novel, which operates a distortion in the mind of the reader who then confuses the real and the imaginary. For Gérard, the imagination is thus not only the source of passions, but also the enemy of reason which alone can attain the truth, that is to say the fundamental dogmas of Christianity. In putting forward a conception of imagination reduced to a power misleading reason, Gérard opposes a long tradition of thinkers, from Aristotle to Pascal, Montaigne, and François de Sales, that reserved to imagination a legitimate place in cognitive processes. His novel Le Comte de Valmont manifests the complete rejection of imagination by the exploitation of a poetic of reason. The work is accordingly structured by the themes and philosophical and theological discussions that are the true narrative motor of the novel. The case of Gérard shows that the debate on the novel must be seen as an integral part of wider debates that involve the cognitive potential of narrative fiction and, more generally, the relationship of man to truth

This austere work is a landmark, but also bears the mark of the context of its writing (a “main” thesis of “Doctorat d’Etat”), of its author and of its intellectual filiation. It is the work of a historian, trained alongside André Aymard and Louis Robert, on an idea of Moses Finley, and finally a thesis directed by Édouard Will. A technical work, which opened many dossiers, it was also part of the history of law. It was well received by epigraphists (it earned its author the chair of epigraphy at the EPHE) and by a number of historians; it was also part of a vast renewal of studies devoted to the relations of cities with foreigners, which characterized the 1970’s to 1990’s (work on isopoliteia, metoikoi, proxenia, asylia, etc.), which has not dried up since. But the author’s institutional and even legal perspectives have given rise to significantly different approaches among historians. Moreover, some of the author’s historical conceptions (such as those set out in his conclusion) are now outdated, by many works, including later studies by Philippe Gauthier himself.
Digital corporate communication and co-productive citizen engagement
Digital technologies have changed communication between citizens and public sector organizations (PSOs) and governments. While many citizens still remain passive when it comes to the public sector and its governance, information and communication technologies (ICTs) have permanently changed how citizens search and share public information, and how they voice their opinions and ideas. Citizen co-production is understood as citizen-PSO engagement toward joint goals, yet it often remains an ideal. Through the example of Madrid City Council’s successful utilization of digital technologies through a mobile app (Madrid Movil), the chapter illustrates how engagement became co-productive via ICTs through improved relationship between authorities and citizens. Digital technologies helped improve public sector listening, real-time information exchange, and communication of citizens with each other, and provided better data about emerging needs. As joint citizen-PSO efforts for co-production of public services, digital co-production contributed to improving the intangible value of public services.peerReviewe
The German Occupation in recent French fiction : an analysis of the literary “mode retro”
This thesis attempts to analyse and characterise the mode rétro, the remarkable renewal of interest in the German Occupation of France, which is coloured by an extensive re-evaluation of the period's significance. An introduction places this fashion in its literary, social and historical context, revealing how, from 1940 to 1969, a collective and predominantly Gaullist 'myth' of the Resistance became established, with the result that the national response to invasion was accepted to be one of wide-spread heroism and revolt. Part I studies the reaction to such résistancialisme, showing how this orthodox interpretation of events was undermined and, for many, discredited, and offering explanations of the timing and direction of the new view. Part II focuses on the fiction, memoirs, autobiographies and biographies of the younger authors, those who have no direct adult experience of the années noires. It is suggested that their obvious obsession with absent parent-figures reflects their awareness that the past has been misrepresented and their heritage rendered problematic. Their sole means of escape from this predicament, their only source of emotional relief is seen to lie in the creation of a personal account of the early 1940s running contrary to the prevalent orthodoxy, the fabrication of a 'counter-myth'. It is thus the notion of myth which links the various sections of the survey, and so gives the thesis its overall unity
Globalization, Social Movements, and the Construction of Europe: The Example of the European Parliament Elections in France, CES Working Paper, no. 74, August 2000
Though social scientists have lately devoted themselves to the study of globalization (Waters 1995; Hirst and Thompson 1999), most of these studies have concentrated on its economic and social consequences. Globalization is often seen as a fundamentally unjust process that causes confusion and destroys more than it creates. In many areas, the substantive implications of globalization are left untouched. In this paper, I examine the link between regional integration in Western Europe and the transformation of domestic politics through the example of the European Parliament elections. I argue that globalization through European integration is having a significant impact on French domestic politics. More precisely, the elections to the European Parliament, a supranational political institution, have contributed to the political mobilization of traditionally voiceless groups such as the unemployed and to the introduction into public discussion of new issues tied to Europe, transforming political culture and the relationship between national politics and multinational bargaining (Keohane and Hoffmann 1990, 295). Not only has European political integration provided marginal groups in France with an access to national politics through European Parliament elections, it has also supplied the government and the presidency with new resources, connecting them to trans-European circles and networks that are developing their own political culture. The success of neoliberal economic doctrines in the European Union may have in part to do with these networks. National ministers spend half their time wrestling with European affairs in the Council of Ministers of the European Union and in transnational party structures, developing a common culture and outlook on politics and economics. The main ingredients for this Weltanschauung are well known: electoral cycles should not interfere with economic policy and unemployment figures should not have priority over other monetary indices in the evaluation of economic and political success
