System-on-chip Computing and Interconnection Architectures for Telecommunications and Signal Processing

    No full text
This dissertation proposes novel architectures and design techniques targeting SoC building blocks for telecommunications and signal processing applications. Hardware implementation of Low-Density Parity-Check decoders is approached at both the algorithmic and the architecture level. Low-Density Parity-Check codes are a promising coding scheme for future communication standards due to their outstanding error correction performance. This work proposes a methodology for analyzing effects of finite precision arithmetic on error correction performance and hardware complexity. The methodology is throughout employed for co-designing the decoder. First, a low-complexity check node based on the P-output decoding principle is designed and characterized on a CMOS standard-cells library. Results demonstrate implementation loss below 0.2 dB down to BER of 10^{-8} and a saving in complexity up to 59% with respect to other works in recent literature. High-throughput and low-latency issues are addressed with modified single-phase decoding schedules. A new "memory-aware" schedule is proposed requiring down to 20% of memory with respect to the traditional two-phase flooding decoding. Additionally, throughput is doubled and logic complexity reduced of 12%. These advantages are traded-off with error correction performance, thus making the solution attractive only for long codes, as those adopted in the DVB-S2 standard. The "layered decoding" principle is extended to those codes not specifically conceived for this technique. Proposed architectures exhibit complexity savings in the order of 40% for both area and power consumption figures, while implementation loss is smaller than 0.05 dB. Most modern communication standards employ Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing as part of their physical layer. The core of OFDM is the Fast Fourier Transform and its inverse in charge of symbols (de)modulation. Requirements on throughput and energy efficiency call for FFT hardware implementation, while ubiquity of FFT suggests the design of parametric, re-configurable and re-usable IP hardware macrocells. In this context, this thesis describes an FFT/IFFT core compiler particularly suited for implementation of OFDM communication systems. The tool employs an accuracy-driven configuration engine which automatically profiles the internal arithmetic and generates a core with minimum operands bit-width and thus minimum circuit complexity. The engine performs a closed-loop optimization over three different internal arithmetic models (fixed-point, block floating-point and convergent block floating-point) using the numerical accuracy budget given by the user as a reference point. The flexibility and re-usability of the proposed macrocell are illustrated through several case studies which encompass all current state-of-the-art OFDM communications standards (WLAN, WMAN, xDSL, DVB-T/H, DAB and UWB). Implementations results are presented for two deep sub-micron standard-cells libraries (65 and 90 nm) and commercially available FPGA devices. Compared with other FFT core compilers, the proposed environment produces macrocells with lower circuit complexity and same system level performance (throughput, transform size and numerical accuracy). The final part of this dissertation focuses on the Network-on-Chip design paradigm whose goal is building scalable communication infrastructures connecting hundreds of core. A low-complexity link architecture for mesochronous on-chip communication is discussed. The link enables skew constraint looseness in the clock tree synthesis, frequency speed-up, power consumption reduction and faster back-end turnarounds. The proposed architecture reaches a maximum clock frequency of 1 GHz on 65 nm low-leakage CMOS standard-cells library. In a complex test case with a full-blown NoC infrastructure, the link overhead is only 3% of chip area and 0.5% of leakage power consumption. Finally, a new methodology, named metacoding, is proposed. Metacoding generates correct-by-construction technology independent RTL codebases for NoC building blocks. The RTL coding phase is abstracted and modeled with an Object Oriented framework, integrated within a commercial tool for IP packaging (Synopsys CoreTools suite). Compared with traditional coding styles based on pre-processor directives, metacoding produces 65% smaller codebases and reduces the configurations to verify up to three orders of magnitude

Between technicality and common language. Definitional praxis and metalinguistic notations in the Dottor volgare by Giovan Battista De Luca   The work proposes an examination of the technical-juridical lexicon of the Doctor volgare (Rome, Corvo, 1673) by Giovan Battista De Luca, before or among the first works of legal doctrine written in Italian. After an introduction on the linguistic option of De Luca, we illustrate aspects of the personal writing practice of the author with regard to the methods of presentation of legal items (relating to institutes, notions, concepts, case of the various subjects of law) for the first time or almost discussed in Italian, and accompanied in the work by observations on continuity and differences compared to non-sectoral contexts. Aspects such as the definitional practice, the encyclopedic approach, the metalexical strategies are illustrated, also documenting from time to time the items subject to analysis through investigations in the historical and etymological lexicography

The seat of the ancient, prestigious Academy of San Luca, the leading cultural institution in Roma, was traditionally located by the church of SS. Luca e Martina in the Roman Forum. The first building, which housed the Academy of Painters, was destroyed in 1929-31 when extensive demolitions were carried out in the area, as part of a plan for recovery of the Forum complex. Projects for the new building were submitted by Tullio Passarelli, Gustavo Giovannoni and finally Arnaldo Foschini; after a long debate construction started in 1932, but the project was soon abandoned as the archaeological issue prevailed, and it was decided to excavate the underlying remain of Caesar’s Forum. Passarelli’s and Foschini’s drawings are published here, together with surveys of the present state by the author of the article, and show careful planning in the layout of the interiors, while the exteriors are a remarkable exercise in the academic style, universally adopted in Rome’s official buildings in the Thirties

Abstract : This biographical sketch attempts to quote some images of Otto Maria Carpeaux: various types of biographical constructions, carried out in different contexts by disparate authors under conditions just as distinct. It stems from a critical view of history, allowing for ?other images? fragmented and non-monumental ? to share the space. In dialogue with the montage principle, this sketch has two parts. The first, Possible Images, quotes the images produced during and after the life of the Austrian-Brazilian, who was born in Vienna in 1900, went to Brazil in exile in 1939 and died in Rio de Janeiro in 1978. The second part, Possible Montages, presents two possibilities of a biographical exercise: through the allegorical reading of documentary O Velho e o Novo (Otto Maria Carpeaux), understood as an instrument of intervention in the Brazilian dictatorship context and as a biographical retelling of the author?s European experiences; and through my Scrapbook of Critical Images, a record of the encounters in Carpeaux through critical images produced from the caesura of the present

Lettere di Angelo Maria Arcioni ad Antonio Magliabechi e a Francesco Arisi

In the last years of his long and industrious life, Angelo Maria Arcioni (1606-1689) embarked in a sparse, but not futile corrispondence with both Antonio Magliabechi (1633-1714) and Francesco Arisi (1657-1743). Both with the renowed Medici's librarian and with the young poet, author to come of 'Cremona literata', the aims of these conversations by letters, behind the façade, real anyhow, of a reciprocal acknowledgement of their respective merits in the artistic life of the 17th century (Aricioni's value being also to be observed in his lyric vein as follower and emulator of Angelo Grillo's poetry), are to be viewed, especially on the side of the cassinese abbot himself, in the light of a continuos desire to became an active element in the cultural network of his age, and, at the same time, of a strong will to favour and to support the scholarly work of his protégé, for example, in the letters here edited, the learned monks Benedetto Bacchini and Giovanni Battista Gentile

    Persuasion, Rhetoric and Authority

    No full text
The author argues that the persuasive process is articulated within a dynamic linking beliefs and emotions. The different possible states of equilibrium balancing these two aspects define a persuasive process as more inherently rational or more inherently rhetorical. This latter, being marked by an immediate emotional participation, functions within a social context of the community type. It is dominated by an aesthetic form of communication, where epistemic belief proceeds out of a conformist adherence to the ethos of the group. Its extreme form is represented by the discourse of propaganda. Linked to the epistemic structure of the rhetorical discourse there corresponds a moral structure of resentment and an authoritarian social structure. Although rational elements and emotional elements still coexist within concrete discourses, the possibility of distinguishing them in terms of autonomous functionalities represents the specific adjunct brought by philosophical reflection to the determination of the epistemic structure of persuasion
