Blurb from Publisher: Prepare to embark on an extraordinary voyage through the enigmatic realm of H.P. Lovecraft’s Arkham in this innovative chapbook. Crafted through a unique blend of artistic expression and technology, this daring work introduces readers to a captivating fusion of maps—concrete poems created by Lovecraft’s texts—and fragments of original poetry. This isn’t your typical homage to Lovecraft; it’s a profound investigation into the mysteries surrounding his most infamous fictional city. While it offers insights into the city’s mythos, it also fearlessly challenges and satirizes the legacy of the renowned writer. Rather than celebrating Lovecraft, this exceptional sequence of poems delves into his idiosyncrasies, unconventional love life, and career failures, shedding new light on his persona and the world he created. Maps to Arkham is a must-read for anyone intrigued by Lovecraftian lore and those who crave a fresh perspective on the enigmatic author himself

The author of the article "The Neurotic Knight. Reminiscing on Grant Morrison's and Dave McKean's Arkham Asylum" wishes to present modern reflections on the genesis of one of the most popular comic books about Batman. To this end, he recalls the diegesis of the cultural work, which takes into account the originality of the story, the perception of the graphic novel, as well as directly references the thoughts of the authors, Grant Morrison and Dave McKean. Particular focus is put on the therapeutic function of the comic, a theme which was discussed in the scholarship of i.a. Janina Scarlet. The character of Batman and his antagonists were portrayed in Arkham Asylum in a groundbreaking, very symbolic way, which at the same time imbued the reader with a sense of dread. Thirty years after the publication, the author of the article reminisces on Morrison's and McKean's work, drawing upon modern research methods and pop- cultural references alike

City - hero - idea : postmodern identities in "Batman : Arkham City"

The aim of the article is to present how space in the modern video game is under the significant influence of postmodern tendencies. The analysis of Arkham City (Batman: Arkham City, 2011), as an example of a virtual city-idea, allows the author to explore the contemporary identity strategies which are hidden in the city structure. Moreover, the scrutiny of these strategies has been placed in the wider context of the experience of the present-day city. Its emphasis is on not only the aesthetic/architectonic parallels, but also the mutual influence of the individual and his living space

'His madness held no affinity': reimagining Arkham Asylum

    No full text
The Gothic madhouse present in H. P. Lovecraft’s fiction is not a dimly lit padded cell situated in a former manor house. Rather, Lovecraft gives little description to his mental hospitals, which is curious given the many narrators who end up in such institutions. Twenty-first century popular culture, on the other hand, enjoys a fascination with the madhouse as a physical space associated with criminality, monstrosity, and themes of imprisonment. Though the figures encountered within Batman’s Arkham may be inspired by the horror of Lovecraft’s Weird tales, it is striking that the solitary name of a fictional landscape proves so enduring beyond, and in addition to, the mythos of its original author. As a means of exposing the negative portrayals of mental illness inherent within twenty-first century reimagining’s of Arkham Asylum, namely its portrayal throughout the Batman media franchise, this article compares the depiction of asylums in two fictions by Lovecraft: “Beyond the Wall of Sleep” (1919), and “The Thing on the Doorstep” (1933) alongside Grant Morrison and Dave McKean’s Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth (1989), and Dan Slott’s serial Arkham Asylum: Living Hell (2004). I argue that a wilful misremembering of historical madhouse regimes occurs within modern and contemporary appropriations of Lovecraft’s asylum setting. Unlike the Batman comics, Lovecraft’s tales show the sinister and hidden machinations of the asylum without depicting it as a violent, haunted, or necessarily horrific space

The author applies Derrida’s textual approach to the comic gender in connec-tion to film language. To do the analysis are taken into account the comics The Killing Joke (Allan Moore, 1988), and Arkham Asylum: A serious house on a serious Earth (Grant Morrison, 1989), as well as the movie The Dark Knight (Christopher Nolan, 2009). PUTUSAN PERADILAN KASUS FIRST TRAVEL NO 3096 K/PID.SUS/2018, PERSPEKTIF MAQĀṢID ASY-SYARĪ‘AH

    No full text
First Travel's valuable assets seizure by the goverment leaves its own problems because the government literally does not suffer any losses at all. The state did not suffer losses, but assets were confiscated, and First Travel victims (prospective Umrah pilgrims) also did not get anything. The Supreme Court as the highest institution of a court hierarchy is expected to be able to give a fair decision, but in fact, the justice had not been perceived by the victims. The author feels the need to examine more deeply the judicial decision of the First Travel case No. 3096 K/Pid.Sus/2018. Three main discussions in this research are the analysis of the delivery of the sense of justice in criminal decisions at the level of cassation in the perspective of maqāṣid ash-syarī'ah. In addition, the seizure of valuable assets by the state will also be analyzed more deeply to explain whether it is true to protect the property of the victims or vice versa in the maqāṣid ashsyarī‘ ah frame. Finally, how is the application of maqāṣid ash-syarī‘ah theory in providing practical solutions to the decision of the First Travel case. This is a library research, with descriptive-analytical by a normative approach. The data were collected by using literature study technique, and the analysis was done descriptively and qualitatively. The data is arranged according to the chronology of the First Travel case, then the case decisions and judges' arguments are analyzed referring to the legal logic made using maqāṣid ashsyarī'ah teory. The maqāṣid ash-syarī‘ah developed by Jasser Auda, classified maqāṣid into three levels; General Maqāṣid (al-maqāṣid al-‘āmmah), Special al- Maqāṣid (maqāṣid al-‘alkhāṣṣah), Partial Maqāṣid (al-maqāṣid al-juz’iyyah). The results of the reaseacrh show that justice for the decision of the First Travel case from the maqāṣid ash-syarī‘ah perspective has not been realized properly. This is due to the fact that the value of justice is not maintained at a special level and the transfer of property rights is not properly maintained at a partial level. Property protection is not protected because the decision has not been able to guarantee the return of property to the entitled party. And have not been able to cope with the protection of assets when there is an injury to the Umrah contract. The solution so that prospective pilgrims can leave is for the government to provide a bailout for Umrah departures. As for overcoming the problem of housing in Indonesia by making applications such as SIPATUH specifically for Umrah, the important point is the mechanism of cooperation with Islamic Banks. Payments to the PPIU can only be carried out when the PPIU provides definite proof of departure to the congregation and the bank and the congregation automatically confirms to the bank. This cooperation makes money safer, so that it can realize the protection of assets (ḥifẓ al-māl), safeguard the value of justice in assets (ḥifẓ al-'adālah al-māliyyah), and make transfers of property rights (ḥifẓ al-intiqāl al-ḥuqūq al-māliyyah).
