    No full text
This activity, held in Southwest Aceh in 2024, was motivated by the low level of participants' understanding of designing positive discipline programs in schools. The activity aimed to improve participants' understanding of designing positive discipline programs. The activity, attended by 53 participants, used the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach and employed a training method. Data on participants' understanding was collected through pre- and post-tests. The data was then analyzed using descriptive analysis. Based on the test results, participants' understanding before the activity was 52.5%, which then increased to 91.5% after the activity. This demonstrates the success of the training in improving participants' understanding and skills in designing positive discipline programs, with a 39% difference in scores between before and after the activity.    &nbsp

Prosperous, Healthy, and Dignified : Policy Pathways for Older Women in Developing Countries

    No full text
In developing countries, women live longer than ever and make up the majority of older people. Many play central roles in their families and communities well into advanced ages, both as income earners and as unpaid carers of grandchildren, spouses, and even their own parents. Older women’s wellbeing is being compromised, however, by economic insecurity, weak health, unmet care needs, and a high burden of care responsibilities. These challenges stem from past and present inequalities that are amplified by economic and social factors unique to developing countries. Government aging strategies need to adopt a gender lens. Context-appropriate policies can address the specific health, financial, and care challenges that women in developing countries face in later life while creating the foundations for today’s girls and women to age into healthier, more prosperous, and dignified older years

Restructuring as a Reflex for Outcomes

    No full text
This paper examines whether project restructuring improves World Bank project performance. Using panel data on Implementation Status and Results ratings, it combines two-way fixed effects with the PanelMatch estimator to address concerns that restructurings are endogenously timed. Restructurings consistently raise Implementation Status and Results ratings, and these gains persist across successive reporting cycles. Timing and scope both matter: early restructurings generate durable improvements, while late interventions yield shorter-lived boosts bounded by project horizons. Level I restructurings produce larger effects than Level II adjustments. These patterns show that adaptation works best when it is timely and substantive. More broadly, restructuring should be viewed not as a reactive correction but as an ordinary mechanism of adaptive management—a structured learning process that transforms performance signals into actionable design updates, reinforcing institutional flexibility and credible mid-course correction

Climate and Social Sustainability in Fragility, Conflict, and Violence Contexts

    No full text
Climate change is widely recognized as a driver of violent conflict, but its broader social effects remain less understood. Ignoring these dimensions risks a vicious cycle where climate policies might undermine socially just adaptation. Evidence is still limited on how climate shocks influence political participation, trust, or migration. This paper helps fill that gap by examining links between climate change, conflict, and social sustainability, with a focus on inclusion, resilience, cohesion, and legitimacy. Using secondary data from 2019–24, the study applies simple correlation-based methods to test three hypotheses on the nature, severity, and composition of these associations. The analysis combines multiple climate impact measures, new conflict classifications, recent social sustainability frameworks, and controls for population and geography. The results reveal strong correlations—not causation—between climate events and contexts of fragility, conflict, and violence. Climate impacts are most pronounced in both national and subnational conflict settings. The study also finds robust links between fragility, conflict, and violence and low levels of social sustainability, reflecting its role as both a driver and consequence of conflict. Some dimensions—such as violent events and insecurity—appear weaker in areas most affected by climate shocks. Two of the hypotheses are supported, and one remains inconclusive

Delivering Hope in Fragile Times: The Story of the Sudan Family Support Program

    No full text
Sudan’s experience following the 2011 secession of South Sudan offers a compelling case study in the design and delivery of social protection in fragile and conflict-affected settings. The loss of three-quarters of its oil revenue triggered a prolonged economic crisis, marked by hyperinflation, fiscal constraints, and rising poverty. Vulnerable groups—especially women, internally displaced persons, and rural communities—faced deepening hardship. Sudan’s transitional government, formed after the 2019 revolution, launched ambitious economic reforms. It introduced the Sudan Family Support Program (SFSP) in 2020 to provide monthly cash transfers to nearly 80 percent of the population and lay the foundation for a nationally owned social protection system. Although the program was suspended in 2021 due to political instability, the SFSP reached 8.7 million people—50 percent of whom were women—before its interruption. Beyond its scale, the program yielded critical lessons and innovations for the delivery of social assistance in low-capacity, high-risk contexts. Delivering Hope in Fragile Times: The Story of the Sudan Family Support Program describes these approaches that include strategies to expand legal identity coverage, hybrid staffing models that combined national capacity with international expertise, and the use of culturally grounded communication to build trust and combat misinformation. Key operational components—such as a simplified joint registration form; phased digital systems integration; and a modular, automated payment platform—allowed for adaptability and real-time responsiveness. The program emphasized community-based delivery and grassroots monitoring via trusted local networks to reinforce accountability and inclusiveness. Partnerships with media and civil society played a vital role in fostering public engagement and managing expectations amid uncertainty. Although the SFSP was cut short, its delivery infrastructure—including digital registries, payment systems, and grievance mechanisms—remained intact and was leveraged to support vulnerable communities across Sudan today. These developments highlight how investing in durable systems can ensure continuity, even amid political disruption. Ultimately, the Sudan Family Support Program offers a valuable model for adaptive, inclusive, and resilient social protection in crisis-affected settings. Its innovations in identity, delivery, and communication provide a roadmap for future efforts to build systems that not only respond to immediate needs but also withstand political shocks. As fragility and conflict continue to shape the development landscape, the lessons from Sudan’s SFSP are increasingly relevant for governments, donors, and practitioners seeking to protect vulnerable populations in uncertain environments

Resilience to Fragility, Conflict, and Violence (FCV Resilience)

    No full text
Acknowledging that bringing together two highly complex, broad, and even contested concepts— resilience and FCV—is an intimidating undertaking, this study approached the task at hand with a great deal of humility. The objective was to frame resilience to FCV (with a particular focus on conflict, violence, social unrest, instability, and their direct effects) as opposed to the more common discussions around resilience in FCV (various sectoral programming that takes place in FCV settings). Given relatively scant evidence within the development sector on resilience, the approach taken was one of inquiring and learning, particularly from the vast body of knowledge and evidence that already exists from multiple other disciplines. The common themes and trends that emerged from this corpus were then investigated further to see how they are applicable and relevant to FCV. The intended audience for this work is the international community of practice that focuses on conflict and fragility, including policy makers and practitioners as well as scholars and analysts

Analyse de la fréquence et des conséquences des inondations au Tchad

    No full text
Chad is consistently rated among the most vulnerable countries in the world to climate change. Increasing temperatures and precipitation are raising the threat of drought, flood, heatwaves, and vector-borne diseases. Infrastructure limitations and Chad’s young, poor, and rapidly growing population amplify these vulnerabilities. Flood risk, in particular, is becoming increasingly salient in Chad due to a series of devastating floods in recent years, notably in 2012, 2022, and 2024. This report analyzes flood risk in Chad as well as flooding incidence over the past 10-15 years using multiple data sources, to assess current and projected exposure to flooding and identify areas with significant risk. The findings aim to inform flood response strategies through the national safety net program and support broader efforts to strengthen resilience.
