Hybrid educators in teacher education: A study of their epistemic boundary work
This article-based thesis investigates the epistemic characteristics of hybrid educators’ boundary work in the context of Norwegian teacher education. With employment both as schoolteachers and educators, hybrid educators provide an interesting case to study the work of professionals who are associated with an expectation of “building bridges” between two knowledge domains. Even though several researchers have emphasised the importance of creating stronger relations between the epistemic communities of teacher education, few have empirically investigated how such relations are constructed in educators’ everyday activities. Furthermore, a shared characteristic among existing studies is the focus on higher educationbased educators as carriers of expertise into the school context; studies on schoolteachers who work as hybrid educators in higher education are lacking. This thesis contributes to this research gap by empirically investigating how schoolteachers who work at teacher education boundaries relate to and engage with knowledge in their everyday work. Based on observational data and interviews, the empirical studies illuminate different epistemic aspects of hybrid educators’ boundary work: The first article examines how hybrid educators negotiate and establish their knowledge contribution in relation to already existing expertise in the higher education context. The analyses identify a contradiction between teacher education leaders’ tendency to downplay boundaries on the one hand, and on the other, hybrid educators’ experience of lacking inclusion, hierarchies, and power imbalances. The findings highlight the importance of recognising expertise as differentiated and as mobilised or silenced through participation in specific professional practices. The second article investigates how hybrid educators relate to and engage with institutional practices and knowledge demands in the higher education context, focusing specifically on their engagement with research-based knowledge. The analyses identify research to be a vague and taken-for-granted expectation that hybrid educators are provided with few directions in approaching, and further highlight a pattern of distanced research engagement. Whereas the second article focuses on how hybrid educators interpret and engage with knowledge associated with the higher education context, the third article directs attention towards how they make use of the knowledge they bring from the school context by directing analytical attention towards practice-based artefacts. The findings demonstrate the complex task involved in “translating” such artefacts in ways that make relations between “theory” and “practice” transparent and studyable in a new context. Across the three articles, the findings demonstrate how hybrid educators conduct boundary work both to clarify differences and enable connections. The thesis identify key characteristics of hybrid educators’ boundary work as concerned with connecting with—or disconnecting from—higher education-based practices, creating knowledge relations, and negotiating responsibilities in the higher education context. The study further highlights the potential in better utilising the different expertise that hybrid educators bring to higher education-based teacher education. Rather than viewing the divisions that hybrid educators bring to the fore as damaging binaries, this study implies that teacher education institutions should foster hybrid expertise to reshuffle dominant perceptions of what knowledge has the most value in the different teacher education domains. Theoretically, this thesis demonstrates how the boundary work construct can be developed to illuminate the complex epistemic work involved in establishing relations across teacher education boundaries.

Preparing student teachers for teacher–artist collaboration: A study on aligning the practices of education and art in teacher education
Although collaboration with artists is common in the teaching profession, teachers are insufficiently prepared for such collaborations. This article-based thesis investigates how the practices of education and art can be aligned to prepare student teachers for teacher–artist collaboration. Alignment is a useful concept for understanding the relation between teachers and artists who engage with different objectives, knowledge domains and practices in their everyday work. The empirical context is the design of a new course on teacher–artist collaboration in a Norwegian teacher education programme. The Cultural Schoolbag (TCS), a national programme that provides artist visits in schools, serves as a case. Primary data consists of video recordings of participatory design workshops in which participants from the field of education and dance design the new course. Other data consist of artefacts produced in the design process, a survey and reflection notes. Drawing on theoretical underpinnings from sociomaterial theories and social practice theory, I analytically foreground the relations of human and non-human elements of the practices of education and art in sociomaterial arrangements. Based on this foundation, this thesis examines i) how relations between the practices of education and art can be created in teacher education to prepare student teachers for teacher–artist collaboration, ii) what conditions enable the creation of these relations and iii) how these relations can be conceptualised. These and the overall research question are discussed with reference to three articles. The first article provides an in-depth analysis of how the newly developed participatory design method Choreopattern infrastructures a sociomaterial arrangement for aligning participants around a shared matter of concern. Choreopattern uses embodied and aesthetic approaches to design the new course. This article provides an understanding of alignment that involves spatial, mental and emotional alignment and shows how the participants in various ways enact engagement, agency and knowledge. The second article traces the design process of the new course in which student teachers and dance students together create a TCS-dance project. Using materiality and relationality of practice as analytical resources, I identify three patterns of relations that contribute to designing a shared setting between the practices of education and art: convergence, collective enactment and connective segmentation. These patterns indicate that the practices of education and art need to be aligned in various ways in teacher education. The article also highlights the role of materiality in the design process. The third article is a conceptual contribution to what skills student teachers need to acquire to engage in short-term artist visits in schools, which are characterised by the ‘unknown’. I argue that students need to learn to attune to the landscape of affordances in artist visits and direct their attention to particular affordances in that landscape. Teacher education can scaffold a landscape of affordance so that student teachers can develop those skills. Across the articles, the findings show how sociomaterial arrangements can be designed by creating relations between the human and non-human elements of the professions of education and art. I further develop the conceptual potential of alignment in terms of directedness, connectedness and positionality to capture qualities and features of the relation between the practices of education and art. From this perspective, the preparation of student teachers for teacher–artist collaboration is not so much a question of empowerment and levelling out asymmetries but of designing sociomaterial arrangements where the resources of the practices of education and art are brought into alignment. Throughout the discussion, I have highlighted several implications for teacher education, teacher–artist collaboration and research.
“They’re only here to observe”. A study of observation-grounded mentoring practices in student teachers’ practicum
The practicum is often regarded as the heart of initial teacher education and a space for professional learning where theoretical knowledge and practical experience can mutually illuminate each other. However, existing research indicates considerable variation in mentoring approaches and learning outcomes for student teachers during their practicum period. Calls have been made for stronger connections between school-based and universitybased learning arenas. This thesis critically examines mentoring practices in student teachers’practicum within the Norwegian teacher education context and suggests architectural improvements to support student teachers’ learning to teach. Systematic classroom observation is a common professional development method for inservice teachers’ collaborative pedagogical inquiry. Nevertheless, limited research exists on how grounding student teacher mentoring in systematic classroom observation might impact their learning to teach. The thesis bridges this research gap by empirically investigating ways mentoring conversations structured around observation descriptions and collaborative interpretation of these observations might enhance learning to teach. The research question guiding the investigation is: In what ways might observation-grounded mentoring practices in student teachers’ practicum support learning to teach? The qualitative research in this thesis aims to deepen understanding of observation-grounded mentoring practices in student teachers’ practicum. Comprised of three articles and an extended narrative, the thesis explores how systematic classroom observation can bolster mentoring practices, thereby enriching student teachers' learning to teach. The empirical studies draw on observation data, interviews, reflection logs, and completed observation worksheets from practicum groups of student teachers and their mentors and shed light on various aspects of observation-based mentoring practices through the following three articles: - Article I defines systematic observation and collaborative interpretation of observations as research and development (R&D) activities. A descriptive case study was conducted with participants from two practicum groups from a master’s programme in Norway to examine student teachers’ R&D activities during their practicum period. Seeing R&D activities as social happenings and, thus, a part of a practice, the study uses the theory of practice architectures (Kemmis, Wilkinson, et al., 2014) as a theoretical and analytical lens to examine the organisational conditions that enable and constrain student teachers’ R&D practices. The study found that ambiguous messages about the relevance of R&D activities in practicum could confuse student teachers, potentially hampering their professional learning. However, the study also found that observational tools could provide a common language for collaborative pedagogical inquiry. Drawing from these findings, current research on mentoring, and the pilot testing of observational tools, a mentoring framework was constructed that centred mentoring conversations on observation descriptions. This observation-grounded mentoring framework (OMF) was the foundation for an intervention study. Eight practicum groups comprising three or four first-year student teachers, a school-based mentor and a university-based teacher educator agreed to try the OMF during the practicum period in February 2022. The data were critically examined using two distinct analytical approaches: - Article II examines the OMF intervention through the lens of 'teacher noticing' (van Es & Sherin, 2002). Noticing is a teacher’s ability to identify important classroom interactions and adapt pedagogical instructions in the moment. The analysis investigates whether the OMF supports student teachers’ learning to notice and, if so, in what ways. The findings indicate that coupling lesson planning with systematic observation in a conversation protocol enhances student teachers' ability to notice significant events in teaching situations and prompts reasoning about teaching and learning through individual and collaborative pedagogical inquiry. - Article III explores the same intervention as Article II but focuses on tripartite mentoring conversations when university-based teacher educators visit practice schools. Empirical research examining how co-mentoring involving school-based and university-based mentors can strengthen coherence between university and school learning arenas is scant. Thus, using the theory of practice architectures as a lens, the article explores issues of power and knowledge in co-mentoring practices structured by the OMF to determine whether the OMF can facilitate tripartite mentoring conversations as communicative learning spaces (Sjølie et al., 2019) - 'safe' learning environments where theoretical and practical knowledge mutually enhance each other. Findings show that the OMF facilitated the tripartite mentoring conversations as communicative learning spaces by offering a shared language for collaborative pedagogical inquiry By synthesising findings from the three articles, the thesis identifies four key factors for observation-based mentoring practices that support student teachers' learning to teach: 1. a shared language; 2. observations of pupils' reactions to the lesson; 3. collaborative interpretation of observations; and 4. a conversation protocol. The thesis advocates for collaboration between schools and teacher education institutions in designing adaptable observation-based mentoring frameworks that provide sufficient scaffolding to ensure the four critical factors. In conclusion, the thesis underscores the importance of developing observation skills for student teachers' learning to teach and the value of observation-based mentoring frameworks for supportive mentoring practices. The thesis contributes to research seeking to support student teachers' professional learning and enhance coherence in teacher education.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Knowledge Discourses and Coherence in Professional Education
In recent years, significant attention has been paid to the relationship between different knowledge domains in professional education, based on the assumption that achieving coherence between domains is important for student learning and educational quality. In particular, much research has addressed questions of knowledge integration across different sites of learning. However, less attention has been paid to the epistemic diversity of the campus-based programme context and to how relationships between knowledge domains are constructed within epistemically diverse professional programmes. This article addresses this gap by examining how program leaders discursively position disciplinary knowledge in relation to the mandate of teacher education. The data consist of interviews and logs from 20 program leaders at four higher education institutions. The analysis identifies four accounts of the role of disciplinary knowledge in teacher education. The article concludes by discussing implications for efforts to achieve coherence and knowledge integration in professional education
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
