Much of peatland in Indonesia has sulphidic materials as substratum. Soil acidity and metal elements in peatlandmay originate from the sulphidic materials which occur underneath of the peat layer. Peat soil buffering capacity andchelating ability of the peat materials regulate the soil acidity and metal solubility in the peatland. The study wasaimed to examine the influence of peat thickness and land hydrological conditions on the concentrations ofexchangeable aluminium (Al) and hidrogen (H) in the peatland. The study was carried out on peaty acid sulphatesoil, deep peat, moderate peat and shallow peat. Exchangeable Al and H were observed in the wet season, transitionfrom wet to dry season and dry season. The results showed that exchangeables of Al and H were mainly originatedfrom sulphidic material which were occured underneath of the peat layer. Peat layer had an important role on thesolubility of Al and H in the peatland. Peat thickness had influence on exchangeable-Al and H, 50 cm of the peatthickness (shallow peat) was the critical for peat function to reduce the Al and H solubility in the peatland. Hydrologicalcondition factor did not influence on the solubility of Al and H.Keywords: Aluminium; hydrogen; peatland; sulphidic materials[How to Cite: Fahmi A, B Radjagukguk, B Heru Purwanto and E Hanudin. 2012. The Role of Peat Layers on Iron Dynamics in Peatlands (A Fahmi, B Radjagukguk, BH Purwanto and E Hanudin): The research aimed to study the effect of peat thickness and humification stage of the peat material on Fe solubility at the peatlands with sulfidic material as substratum.  The research was conducted at three conditionals of ombrogen peatlands ie ; deep, moderate and shallow peat. Soil samples were collected by using peat borer according to interlayer (the border layer of peat and mineral layer) and conditional of soil horizons.  The sample point depth were (cm) G.s2 : 25, G.s1 : 50, Int.s : 70,  M.s1 : 90 and M.s2 : 100 for shallow peat, G.m2 : 47, G.m1 : 100, Int.m : 120 and M.m1 : 135 for moderate peat and G.d3 : 50, G.d2 : 150, G.d1 : 200, Int.d : 220  and M.d1 : 235 for deep peat respectively.  The results showed that most of Fe on the tested soils was found in organic forms. The peat layers above the sulfidic material decreased the Fe2+ solubility at peatlands. Fe2+ concentration in peat layer decreased with its increasing distance from sulfidic material. There was any other processes beside complexation and chelation of  Fe2+  by humic material and its processes was reduction of Fe3+ and this conditions was reflected in redox potential values (Eh)

The Lagos coast - Investigation of the long-term morphological impact of the Eko Atlantic City project

    No full text
The Lagos coast has been suffering high rates of erosion since the construction of three harbour moles, i.e. the West Mole, East Mole and the Training Mole, at the tidal inlet connecting the Lagos Lagoon to the South Atlantic Ocean. To provide for a permanent erosion mitigation measure and to create residential and commercial area for circa 400,000 people, the Eko Atlantic City project has been initiated in 2008. In front of the eroded coast, approximately 9 km² of land will be reclaimed and protected by a revetment. In this study the long-term and large-scale morphological behaviour of the Lagos coast is investigated and subsequently the long-term morphological impact of the Eko Atlantic City project is assessed. First, a conceptual model is created, in which the historical development of the coast is discussed. The long-term morphological behaviour of the coast downstream of the inlet is determined by two main factors: sediment accumulation at the West Mole and sediment import into the tidal inlet and the lagoon, induced by disturbance of the morphological equilibrium by sea level rise and dredging activities. Using the numerical simulation model Unibest, the long-term impact of Eko Atlantic City is assessed. It is concluded that the construction of Eko Atlantic City will not change the total erosion volumes occurring downstream of the inlet. However, as the revetment of the project retains the coast, the erosion will be shifted towards downstream. Downdrift of the project, the erosion rates are locally relatively high. The shape of the sea defence has been designed to minimize the local erosion effect. A monitoring and mitigation strategy has been recommended to monitor this effect and to instruct coastal protection management actions to be implemented if required.Coastal EngineeringHydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience

MORPHOLOGY AND CHEMICAL STRUCTURE OF ALLOPHANE

    Get PDF
Abstract Morphology and chemical structure of allophane which was found in soils developed from volcanicash soils or pumice, has been established. High resolution electron micrographs have shown that the allophane consists of hollow spheres or polyhedra 3.5-5.0 nm in diameter with a wall thickness estimated to be about 0.7 nm. The wall of the hollow sphere, nano-ball, has some holes (defects) with diameter of 0.3-0.5 nm. Chemicalstructure of allophane is characterized by short-range order and the predominance of 5i-0-AI bondings. Chemical composition of allophane variesranging in the 5ijAI atomic ratio from about 0.5 to 1. Allophane with 5ijAI ratio of 0.5 is a fundamental structure which is composed of gibbsite [AI(OH)31sheet with 5i04 tetrahedra attaching on it, and has hollow spherical morphology to locate the 5i04 tetrahedra inside of the sphere. Allophane with the 5ijAI ratio more than 0.5 has some condensed 5i04 tetrahedra weakly bonded to its structure
