Igniting Students’ Language Study-Skill: An Overview of the Practice of English Literary Material

Detail English literary materials were selected and processed to establish a course-book to be implemented in Junior-High Schools. The materials were designed to ignite students’ language study skills namely inspiration, interactivity and creativity as important aspects in English education. The study was a developmental research and experimental study. The data were collected through (a) an English essay test involving different difficulty levels of questions (cognitive, analytic, evaluative and creative), and (b) classroom observation and interview. Results from this study identified that the learning processes and learning results clearly reflected the three language study skills. By providing and facilitating proper interactive reading materials and a lively atmosphere of classroom discussion, students got inspired to get their own ideas, got free to write their own sentences and this circumstance assigned students to become more creative. Such content of an inspirational, interactive and creative course book must be relevant to the students’ preferences like interest and need to induce students think critically by relating things into facts

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Ideal Teachers’ Personalities Motivating English Learners in Senior High School

The objectives of the research are 1) to outline the ideal teachers’ personalities as perceived by students; 2) to describe students\u27 motivation in learning English taught by teachers who have these ideal teachers\u27 personalities; and 3) to construe the impact on students\u27 perceptions of the teachers\u27 personalities with their motivation. This research was designed by applying descriptive methods with quantitative approaches. The study participants were 149 students and four teachers from MAN 1 Makassar. They were chosen by random cluster technique. The data were obtained through questionnaires, interviews, and observation. The result of the findings showed that the ideal teachers\u27 personalities as perceived by students are friendly (93.95%), followed by sincere (93.29%), polite (93.28%), patient (92, 62%), good teaching skill/ability (91,95%), organized (89,27%), care/ empathetic (83,89%), cheerful (83,21%), creative (81,88%) and attractive (81,21%), patient (75%), and cheerful (75%). The findings also show that most students who learn English are motivated by the ideal teachers\u27 personalities. Students tend to be more motivated in learning if teachers have positive behavior and characteristics such as being friendly, organized, cheerful, creative, patient, and having good teaching skills/abilities. This research showed that teachers with good personalities would quickly build relationships with students to improve their motivation to learn. The findings also showed a significant correlation between teachers\u27 personalities and students\u27 motivation to learn English. Teacher talk undoubtedly makes a certain factor whether the class will meet objectives of teaching and learning process or not. This research investigated (1) students’ perception towards teacher talk that happened during the teaching and learning process, and (2) students’ ideal expectations about their English teacher. This was a descriptive qualitative research. One English teacher and one class of first year senior high students were engaged in the research. The data of this research were collected from transcribed-classroom video recording and interview to some students. The results indicated that (1) students’ perception towards teaching style, such as teaching method, motivating, giving feedback were almost negative and (2) students’ ideal expectations that an English teacher should be more effective, efficient interactive and creative for creating more interesting classroom atmosphere.  Keywords: Teacher Talk, Perception, Expectatio

In modern today, people compete to beautify themselves since being beauty has become a primary needs for every woman, even for a man. Besides for personal reason such as taking care of themselves, very often because it is caused by demands of work that requires fine appearance. For now, there are lots of beauty products that are easily obtained from online or offline markets. To support each products, each company needs certain marketing technique to attract consumers. This research aims to investigate language style used in some advertisements for Indonesian beauty products. There were total of 10 advertisements of 5 Indonesian beauty brands investigated in this study. Researchers used note-taking as an instrument and applied purposive sampling technique.  Result of this study reveals that from several language style found in those advertisements, hyperbole appeared the most with 33 times appearance. Hyperbole is a kind of figure of speech that conceive heightened impact through the using, or even repetition, of purposeful exaggeration. This language style is often boldly overstated claims to emphasize things. Thus, most of beauty brands by locals investigated in this study used hyperbolic technique to advertise their products.Di zaman modern seperti sekarang, orang berkompetisi untuk mempercantik diri karena hal ini sudah menjadi kebutuhan primer bagi setiap wanita. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
