The purpose of this research is to analyse the novel Cartas a Sandra, written by the Portuguese author Vergílio Ferreira. Cartas a Sandra, an intimate and confessional work, associates, in a last exercise of poetic art, themes and key elements in order to construct an universal whole, promoting, in a phenomenological consistency, the junction of different compositions and the intense dialogue between them. From a vast area of literature, we chose the epistolary novel, memoir or essay on daily life, whose sense of contiguity is revealed at the end, not only in what concerns Vergílio’s works but also the life of the author himself. Therefore, with the present study, we aim to highlight the novel as a privileged space, capable of performing the synthesis of Vergílio Ferreira’s thoughts beneath various forms of expression. Assuming a hermeneutic perspective, we intend to analyse this work based on the interpretation by placing different questions surrounding the fictional construction of the text being studied. Thus, in the first instance, and always in accordance with an attitude that we want to be rigorous, we will analyze, on the one hand, the theoretical paths of the currents of neorealism and existentialism that permeate the novel's fictional construction under study, and, on the other hand, establish the characteristics of the epistolary record, contrasting its various manifestations. Afterwards, we’ll seek historically and culturally contextualize the work under review, opting for a comprehensive foray into the novel Cartas a Sandra. In this sense, we’ll try to understand the significance that led to the selection of the epistolary genre, a genre characterized by its reduced informativeness for the production of texts, determining its functionality, in the view of aesthetics “jaussiana” reception. Conclusively, we will conduct a comparative study with other works of the same author, a dialogue of affinities, making approximate their similarities, particularly autobiographical, and thus fraternize some of the elements that constitute the core theme of this investigation

    No full text
The paper presents a possible translation of the poem "Vitaï Lampada", published by Sir Henry Newbolt, in 1897. His work can be inscribed in the genre of military-patriotic poetry, much in vogue in the nineties of the nineteenth century. The author reached in those years a high degree of popularity, for the tone and the character of his verses, but later fell out of favor - especially with the critics - coinciding with the decline of the imperialist ethic - with which Newbolt is inextricably associated - and with the awareness of the atrocity of the war, resulting from the impact of the first World War. Therefore, a timeworn text, the work of an author who is poorly considered and sometimes derided. Yet, because of the characteristics that make it an object of criticism and sometimes scorn, this poem - as the entire production of Newbolt - is worthy of attention because it is extremely representative of its era, of its mindset, of a cultural heritage that can be judged only when put in its proper context. The paper seeks to show how the translation of poetry can be an intellectual operation which requires a further degree of meta-textual reflection. The idiomatic phrase in the title of the paper - "What game are we playing?", inspired by the famous refrain, "Play up! Play up! and play the game! "- is intended as an invitation to reflect on the specificity of the semantic field of the verb" to play "in the ideological and historical moment in which Newbolt's poem was produced. From this consideration comes the need, for the translator, to bridge - or at least to reduce - the cultural gap between the British and the Italian concepts of "playing the game", especially with regard to the idea of "playing" a sport, and the value the Italians place to sports in terms of education or patriotic

AND RUPTUREs ABSTRACT: Dulce Santana and Maria Santana, Confronting Textile Routes, Continuity and Ruptures is the title of this Ph.D. that follows a theoretical-practical format. It reports on two authors´ textile works, which belong to two generations. It intends to analyse and compare two eras, the continuities, evolutions and paradigmatic mutations. It frames textile art in contemporaneity and previous contributions. It also compares textile design applied specially to feminine fashion of the sixties, and the art free from any utilitarian purpose. This Ph.D. aims to find those works´ underlying aesthetical and conceptual theorizing, in order to understand the compared evolution of two artistic routes united by textile art, which belong to the same family tradition - mother and daughter, who is the Ph.D.´s author. Considered is abstraction in transitional modern textile imaginary harmony, contrasting with abstraction in contemporary textile aesthetics. Included is also the classical textile art concept in fashion weaving, versus the new textile art concept in tapestry, both united by the continuity of the thread´s concept. A final work illustrates the new textile art paradigm. In both cases one is dealing with female work inserted in cultural forms that developed themselves on society´s edge. Michel Foucault mentions them as subdued cultures. Dulce Santana´s work goes along with what some call material culture, while Maria Dulce Santana´s work belongs to an artististic activity

    Narrating the Italian historical novel

    No full text
This dissertation examines the relationship between the representation of history and the narrative devices and strategies that authors use to sew their readers deeper into the story in Italian historical novels of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. My theoretical framework builds on the assertion that history as a professional discipline in Europe emerged toward the beginning of the nineteenth century--the same time period in which the historical novel was cementing itself as a legitimate literary genre in Italy. I claim that his tandem emergence of history as a discipline and the historical novel is paralleled in the late twentieth century by their critical denouement, as some theorists of postmodern theory argue that a sense of the end of "official" history permeates the latter part of the twentieth century and continues today. I argue that this outlook permits us to look backward in time and rethink authoritative history, filling in its previously ignored blank pages. I demonstrate how nineteenth2 century narrators establish a connection with their readers by deflating conventional authority, and how narrators of contemporary historical novels establish and confirm their narrative authority by claiming that they have none, as they are all marginalized figures in society and in history. The novels I discuss include Alessandro Manzoni's I promessi sposi, Ippolito Nievo's Le confessioni d'un italiano, Francesco Domenico Guerrazzi's Beatrice Cenci, Anna Banti's Artemisia, Umberto Eco's Il nome della rosa, Luisa Muraro's Guglielmo e Maifreda, Maria Rosa Cutrufelli's La briganta, Sebastiano Vassalli's La chimera, Luther Blissett's Q, and Wu Ming's 54.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 180-182)by Sandra A. Empoderamento pela escrita: análise semiótica do romance quarto de despejo, de Carolina Maria de Jesus.

    No full text
This monograph analyzes the book Quarto de despejo: diary of a favelada, by Carolina Maria de Jesus. The work, written in the first person, reflects the narrator's survival in the Canindé favela in the capital São Paulo in the 1960s, where she suffered extreme poverty and deprivation. It is in this context that the urgency of literary writing emerges, recording in notebook its notes in a diary format. In this writing, she reveals her daily life as a garbage collector and her resistance in the midst of hunger, violence, addiction, and difficulties in caring for her children. Our central objective was to analyze how the novel thematizes the social condition of the black woman, the (non) recognition of Carolina as a writer, and the place that literature has for itself. In order to do so, we consider the way in which he thematizes his relationship with books, as a reader, and the urgency of writing as a way of survival, constituting himself in the place of production, in the condition. Carolina privileges writing as a possibility of existence and resistance and place of feminine empowerment. As a theoretical basis, studies were carried out that deal with the social issue of black women (Mirela, 2011, Pereira, 2013, Werneck, 2010, Tokita, 2013), racial literacy (Almeida, 2017), enunciation (BENVENISTE, 1989; FIORIN , 2017). From the discussion that involves the questions of race, gender and class, we will mobilize categories of discursive semiotics for the analysis of the novel, privileging what the theory defines as discursive semantics (FIORIN, 2017). In this sense, we are interested in observing the way in which it is enunciated as author. Keywords: female empowerment; female literature; written as resistance; Carolina Maria de Jesus; enunciation.

Franz Grillparzers Frauenfiguren in sozialgeschichtlichem Kontext

This diploma thesis deals with Franz Grillparzer's female characters in a social historical context. The main focus is directed on the differences between the real circumstances of life in the Biedermeier period and Grillparzer's description of his female characters. The main results of this diploma thesis show, how partiarchal society is devastated by self-confident femininity

Course grades and standardized tests as predictors of successful completion of the associate degree nursing program at Lakeshore Technical College

    No full text
Plan BDue to the increasingly severe shortage of registered nurses, Lakeshore Technical College (LTC) is now more aware of, and more determined to deal with the issues of student recruitment and retention. Successful completion of the Associate Degree Nursing Program (A.D.N.) at Lakeshore Technical College depends on many factors, both intrinsic and extrinsic to the program. Variables that affect the learner such as family concerns, health, or program related issues might lead to problems in school related areas such as retention. Student records of 174 LTC associate degree nursing students, enrolling in the program in and after January of 1997, who graduated, failed, or withdrew from the program by May 2000, will be analyzed. Grades received in specific required general education courses, pre-nursing required science courses, and scores received on the American College Test (ACT) or Assessment of Student Skills for Entry Test (ASSET) will be studied. This data will be examined to determine if a pattern exists between grades, standardized testing scores, and retention in the LTC associate degree-nursing (A.D.N.) program. Analysis of the data obtained in this research may identify factors that could alert faculty members to academic problems and potential failure of the student. It would also allow for early intervention to aid the student through the use of guidance, faculty or peer assistance, and promote successful completion of the program

Então, em nosso terceiro capítulo, valendo-nos sobretudo de um pensar abdutivo e amplificador, tomamos essas três palavras-imagens como pontos de partida para elaborações compreensivas sobre o criar rosianoIn this work, we intend to contribute to a broadening of knowledge about creativity, with on a dialogical study, based on the records of the creative career of writer João Guimarães Rosa and the psychological theory of Carl Gustav Jung. In the first chapter, we review the concept of creativity in Jung\'s work, trying to demonstrate how this concept was elaborated and how it relates to other theoretical formulations fundamental to Jungian thinking. In the second chapter, anchored in studies on the Rosian work and in Rosa\'s own testimonies, we present characteristics of the writer\'s creation. As we study Rosa\'s records intending to understand her creative course, we do not employ predefined categories of understanding. But, as we studied the records, three images were raised: to play, pact, and struggle. That is, as it seemed to us, the creative process of the author of Minas involves something of playful, something of pact and something of struggle. So, in our third chapter, relying primarily on abductive and amplifying thinking, we take these three words-images as starting points for understanding elaborations on the Rosian creatio
