Fatma aliye and defense of Islamic values
The article concerns an analysis of the recently published text by Fatma Aliye debating with European ideas and prejudices about Islam that has not been a subject of interest in the South Slavonic intellectual and academic circles. Fatma Aliye (1862-1936) was the first Turkish woman novelist, the first Turkish woman philosopher, and the author of the book Tezahur-i Hakikat (Appearance of Truth) that was published for the first time in January 2016 on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of her death. Like some writers of the Tanzimat era, especially Namik Kemal, Fatma Aliye entered the debate with the European writers wishing to oppose the prevailing Orientalist approach in Europe that had been blaming Islam for the stagnation of sciences and culture. She demonstrated enviable erudition and devotion to the Islamic culture. Her views show the permanent duality of the Ottoman intellectuals between their desire for Westernization and their need to stay in the Islamic tradition. In many aspects, the approaches to Islam and the defence of Islamic values of Fatma Aliye are still current

A Woman’s Biography: Fatma Aliye Hanım or The Emergence of an Ottoman Woman of Letters Bir Kadın Biyografisi Olarak Fatma Aliye Hanım yahut Bir Muharrire-i Osmaniye’nin Neş’eti
From the mid-19th century onwards, measures taken to include women in the modernization project began to bear fruit only at the end of the century. The participation of women as writers in the world of literature and the press can be considered as a result of this modernization movement. In such a period, the presentation of Fatma Aliye Hanım’s biography has multiple meanings in terms of both its writing and its content. Fatma Aliye Hanım or the Emergence of an Ottoman Woman of Letters, written by Ahmet Mithat Efendi, was published in 1896. It is known as the first biography by a female author in the Ottoman world. It has maintained this characteristic for many years. In this study, in order to define the text, first of all, the writing, publication and features of Fatma Aliye Hanım or the Emergence of an Ottoman Woman of Letters are emphasized. Meanwhile, some issues were clarified based on the correspondence between Fatma Aliye Hanım and Ahmet Mithat Efendi. However, the main problematic of the study is to reveal the subject matter of a woman in biography, which was a completely masculine genre at the time it was written. In this context, the text was analyzed as a biography of a woman written by a male author in a period with masculine characteristics, and an evaluation was made based on its possibilities, impossibilities, limitations and achievements
Informal Adult Learning: Advertisements in Women's Magazines in Turkey
Gur, Faik/0000-0003-3203-4187; Seggie, Fatma Nevra/0000-0002-0657-6284; kisabacak basgurboa, Dr. gulsah/0000-0001-6337-2598This study examines the visual and verbal content of advertisements in women's magazines published between 1980 and 1990 in Turkey. Based on content analysis, we established the categories of products and services, age, body parts, women's roles, clothes, and locations. We determined the five most frequent words employed in all grammatical or lexical forms: beautiful (guzel), to live (yasamak), new (yeni), skin (cilt), and young (genc). By examining the data through informal learning, the study looks at how consumer-oriented values were taught informally to women readers during a period when Turkey underwent integration with the neoliberal global economy. We argue that the advertisements in women's magazines were effective both in terms of disseminating the dominant values of the era and in causing women to informally internalize the consumer-oriented values required for the development of the desired female subjectivities of an emerging neoliberal society.Social Science Citation Inde
