Robust cluster analysis and variable selection
Clustering remains a vibrant area of research in statistics. Although there are many books on this topic, there are relatively few that are well founded in the theoretical aspects. In Robust Cluster Analysis and Variable Selection, Gunter Ritter presents an overview of the theory and applications of probabilistic clustering and variable selection, synthesizing the key research results of the last 50 years. The author focuses on the robust clustering methods he found to be the most useful on simulated data and real-time applications. The book provides clear guidance for the varying needs of bo
A Clusterwise Regression Method for the Prediction of the Disposal Income in Municipalities
The paper illustrates a clusterwise regression procedure applied to the prediction of per capita disposal income (PCDI) in Italian municipalities. The municipal prediction is derived from the provincial PCDI taking into account the discrepancy between municipality and province in some indicators like per capita taxable income, per capita bank deposits, employment rate, etc. The relation between PCDI and indicators is shaped by a regression model. A single regression model doesn’t fit very well all territorial units, but different regression models do it in groups of them. The aim of clusteriwise regression is just that: detecting clusters where the correspondent regression models explain the data better than an overall regression model does. The application of the procedure to a real case shows that a significative reduction of the regression standard error can be achieved
Outlier detection for geostatistical functional data: an application to sensor data
In this paper we propose an outlier detection method for geostatistical
functional data. Our approach generalizes the proposal of Febrero et al. (2007, 2008)
in the spatial framework. It is based on the concept of the kernelized functional
modal depth that we have opportunely defined extending the functional modal depth.
As an illustration, the methodology is applied to sensor data corresponding to long-
term daily climatic time series from meteorological stations
Calibration with spatial data constraints
We describe an approach that combines the calibrated estimation and the spatial data analysis. In particular we want to describe the possibility of using calibrated estimators when spatial constraints arise in the estimation process with respect to some information that were considered available instead. We describe some possible constraints that could emerge during the estimation procedure and we develop an example of a constrained situation where the constraints are on auxiliary information available and on the density of the units in the spatial domain considered
Tome I Textes, Tome II Livre d'images (photographies, dessins, gravures, documents); lexique, index hominum, index locorum, bibliographieInternational audienceIn 1903 the Swiss journalist William Ritter set out to walk through the Myjava region in the foothills of the Lesser Carpathians in the westernmost corner of Slovakia, which was still a part of the Kingdom of Hungary at the time. It was a revelation: he kept returning to this region until 2014, his passion for it inspired by the myth of a Slovak countryside protected from the effects of modernisation. However, Ritter, a dandy, aesthete and lover of boys, embellished this myth to fit his own dreams. He tirelessly made notes, drew, took photographs and enjoyed a relationship with Janko, who became his lover. He published articles on politics to pay the bills and wrote two sociographic novels (The/A Little Slovak Girl, 1903, and Slovak Stubbornness, 1910) and a study of the architecture of Myjava. But although he encouraged his friends – including Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, the future Le Corbusier – to travel there, this country remained his own secret domain [private passion?].During the years after 1900 Ritter was the author of pioneering articles on Mahler (the first in 1901), Studies of Foreign Art (1906), the first monograph in French on the Czech composer Smetana (1907), and reportage on Moravia and the painter Uprka (1912). But he could not lift the veil on his Slovakia. This book of images was inspired by the restoration at the Neuchâtel Library of discovered photographs, which it complements with samples of graphic work and written sources.
A Continuous Time Mover-Stayer Model for Labor Market in a Northern Italian Area
A new and powerful source of information concerning the Italian Labor
Market is represented by C.OBB data that register the characteristics of all new employments.
By means of this information and focusing on the Province of Cremona,
we analyze the mobility of employees among different kinds of job contracts (and
unemployment also): in particular, from contracts characterized by modest packages
of securities toward more structured working relations, ending with Unlimited Time
Duration Contracts. The statistical tool used for this analysis is Mover Stayer Model
in Continuous Time. Our analysis reveals low mobility from Limited Time Duration
to Unlimited Time Duration contracts
PAVAO RITTER VITEZOVIĆ, NATIONAL IDENTITY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE
Using Quentin Skiner’s and John Pocock’s methodological guidelines, the author argues that the topic of the text by Pavao Ritter Vitezović, Oživljena Hrvatska /The Revived Croatia/ is – identity. The text establishes ethnic identity, and at the same time provides the “tools” for the future “constructors of the nation” in their creation of the national identity. Because of this, the author suggests that Pavao Ritter Vitezović, due to the subject he covered – identity – should be considered as part of the Croatian political science tradition
