Gore Vidal ou la pensée visuelle
The Visual Aspect in Gore Vidal's Works.
Gore Vidal occupies an enviable position in American letters as a novelist, playwright, essayist and screenwriter.
After experiencing a love-hate relationship with T.V. and the movies for years, though he wrote for both media with some success, he managed to combine perfectly cinema and literary techniques, underlying the impact of the screen on his generation.
His novels often resemble film scripts, with their dissolve, cuts and cheery sunbursts before the last fadeout.
Though in favour of an explosion of the structures of traditional fiction, he is still deeply attached to literary values considering the novel as « the purest form of art ».Romancier, dramaturge, essayiste, homme politique, scénariste, Gore Vidal est un personnage à multiples facettes.
In Lincoln, a historical novel published in 1984, Gore Vidal refines his politics of representation that focuses on the reconstruction of national memory through the revision of Abraham Lincoln’s historiography. In this essay I examine how Vidal revisits the myth created by the historical discourse. Moreover, I analyse the ideological implications of this rewriting process as far as the American political metamorphoses are concerned
