TOWARDS A 'CONVERGENT' INDEX OF ITALIAN CULTURAL PRODUCTS' IMPACT IN CHINA

The thesis’s hypothesis is the possibility of the creation of a model for the prediction of any Italian media product in the Chinese market, by “success” meaning a cultural-economic impact equal to that of some benchmark products of the last years (the novel L’amica geniale, the film Perfetti sconosciuti, the TV-series My Brilliant Friend). Cultural impact is measured as the generation of online discourse, while the economic impact by traditional and digital indicators, for physical and online distributions respectively. The three cases used as benchmarks served to provide online discourse material from which to extract predictive variables by Python 3-supported LDA topic modelling and sentiment analysis. In chapter 1 Digital Humanities (DH) are explored and defined as a field of study. Chapter 2 summarises the main theories about cultural production. Chapter 3 details the methodology and its empirical application, also containing a section devoted to testing, which in turn confirmed the model’s reliability. Results show that DH’s tools were a proper choice, while last century’s theories of cultural production may benefit from updates. Three sets of variables to predict Italian media products in China were identified

Clinical and radiographic outcomes of extra-short implants (≤ 6 mm) in the posterior atrophic jaws: a retrospective cohort study

Objective: This study aimed at investigating implant survival rate and marginal bone loss (MBL) around extra-short implants. The impact of the loading protocol and of the use of an intermediate abutment was also evaluated, to explore possible differences in terms of the outcome measures. Materials and methods: Patients with single or multiple mandibular or maxillary posterior edentulism rehabilitated using extra-short 5-6 mm long implants were included. Different prosthetic protocols were used. Clinical and radiological follow-up was 5 years. The outcomes measures were implant survival and MBL. Results: The analysis included 56 implants placed in 34 adults (12 males and 22 females; mean age 60 years, SD 11). Six implants failed during a median follow-up of 5 years and 4 of them were recorded in one patient at 2-year follow-up. The 5-year implant survival was 89% overall (87% in conventional and 94% in immediate loading). At univariate analysis, during follow-up immediate loading was associated with higher MBL (mean variation 0.21 mm, 95%CI 0.01 to 0.40; p = 0.02), while intermediate abutment was associated with lower MBL (mean variation -0.23 mm, 95%CI -0.39 to -0.09; p = 0.003). Multivariable analysis confirmed that immediate loading was associated with higher MBL. Conclusion: Within its limitations, this study showed that extra-short implants under immediate loading conditions can be a reliable solution. The application of horizontal and vertical platform switching with the use of intermediate abutments seems to be able to contribute to the reduction of MBL

Gli elementi nostalgici dei punta-e-clicca italiani degli Anni Dieci = Nostalgic elements in Italian point-and-click video games of the 2010s

This paper inquiries the insertion of nostalgic elements in Italian point-and-click video games of the 2010s, highlighting those elements that still survive in spite of being out-of-date from the points of view of technology and gameplay. After having clarified the notions of "point-and-click" and nostalgia, the paper presents the corpus of titles considered in the analysis, that is, thirty-seven Italian point-and-click video games of the last decade. The choice of such corpus is based on three reasons: limiting the size of the corpus to make it manageable; maintaining an adequate temporal distance from the classic and post-classic point-and-click video games, such a lapse of time being a precondition of nostalgia; focussing on video games "indie", a label including all the corpus's titles. Three categories of nostalgic insertion were detected: "technical", "thematically dense" and "thematically rarefied". The first includes titles technically similar to the classics (1990-1995), which they idealise and emulate by an explicit interface (e.g. SCUMM v. 4). The second comprises games whose inspiration is rather that of the second half of the Nineties, when new technological solutions were introduced (e.g. pseudo-3D). The third contains products more innovative than nostalgic, still interspersed with quotations. Three case studies are presented to testimony of these categories, respectively: Chronicle of Innsmouth (PsychoDev, 2017), Detective Gallo (Footprints Games, 2018) and The Wardrobe (C.I.N.I.C. Games, 2017)

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
