'Another work routine is possible': everyday experiences of (unexpected) remote work in Italy
The article discusses the opinions and perceptions of knowledge workers in Italy concerning the shift to remote work during the first countrywide lockdown (March-May 2020) imposed to contain the Covid-19 outbreak. Prior to the pandemic, remote work arrangements in the Italian context were not common. Thanks to a set of 35 interviews to workers who experienced significant disruption to their usual working routine because of the health crisis, we show that a marked element of discovery of remote work characterizes their accounts, articulated across 3 dimensions: temporal organization of work and life, technology, and social relations. We argue that this experience was instrumental for many of them to learn that 'another work routine is possible', because of the opportunity to try out alternative arrangements in the management of tasks and responsibilities. Yet issues of work-life balance, together with managerial cultures anchored in pre-pandemic forms of organization, considerably affect this perception
Abstract : Intending to delineate the way the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco has been inserted in the Brazilian literary system and the paths his translated books have followed, this thesis gives voice to the translating experiences of his translators. Baricco's insertion in Brazil began in 1997, through a personal project of Dr. Roberta Barni, with her translation of Oceano Mare. Since then, seven other of his works have been published in Brazil, three of which were translated by Roberta Barni and the other four by four different translators. On the one hand, the translator is considered as the main figure in mediation betweencultures and, on the other, this figure's reality is analyzed within theliterary system: its invisibility, its limits and its professional practice. Criticisms and reviews of this Italian author published in well established Brazilian newspapers are also considered, with the understanding that they are part of Baricco's image reflected here
Studying ageism on social media: an exploration of ageing discourses related to Covid-19 in the Italian Twittersphere
As recent contributions by international scholars have highlighted, the state of emergency caused by the diffusion of Covid-19 has further stressed the importance of exploring ageism’s pervasiveness and the extent to which ageist discourses are appropriated or opposed by the public. Since social media platforms seem to provide an increasingly relevant space for generational stereotyping that highlights conflict between younger and older generations, investigating ageism towards older people expressed on social media during the pandemic is deemed particularly important. This article explores ageing discourses circulated within the Italian Twittersphere during the first peak of the Covid-19 emergency. It draws on a dataset of 7M+ Covid-related tweets collected in the first phase of the health crises. Through quanti-qualitative analysis, it explores Twitter content related to Covid-19 and older people: 110,316 tweets detected taking advantage of a set of ad hoc keywords (e.g., anzian*, vecch*). Drawing on our findings, we show that explicit stereotypical opinions are quite residual, and we put forth and discuss the concept of platformised ageing discourse to explain how social media platforms’ structure and functioning affect ageing related cultural production
With the diffusion of Industry 4.0 and the digitalization of the economy, we have witnessed an increase in the monitoring of productive performances, through the use of digital technologies (e.g. Internet of Things, Cloud Manufacturing). To date, there is scarce empirical evidence on the awareness by older workers on the existence and the functioning of digital surveillance systems. Using large scale survey data we find that among old age workers those that are employed in low skill jobs and manual workers have a lower awareness about digital extraction processes. Given that manual work is subject to processes of passive monitoring of productivity it is particularly important to augment the awareness of extraction processes by the most vulnerable workers
NAD Kinase by Quinolinic Acid
NADP is essential for biosynthetic pathways, energy, and signal transduction. In living organisms, NADP biosynthesis proceeds through the phosphorylation of NAD with a reaction catalyzed by NAD kinase. We expressed, purified, and characterized Bacillus subtilis NAD kinase. This enzyme represents a new member of the inorganic polyphosphate [poly(P)]/ATP NAD kinase subfamily, as it can use poly(P), ATP, or other nucleoside triphosphates as phosphoryl donors. NAD kinase showed marked positive cooperativity for the substrates ATP and poly(P) and was inhibited by its product, NADP, suggesting that the enzyme plays a major regulatory role in NADP biosynthesis. We discovered that quinolinic acid, a central metabolite in NAD(P) biosynthesis, behaved like a strong allosteric activator for the enzyme. Therefore, we propose that NAD kinase is a key enzyme for both NADP metabolism and quinolinic acid metabolism
This article studies the mature career of the Florentine painter Alessandro Fei del Barbiere (1537-1592), beginning with the rediscovery of the 'Ascension' altarpiece formerly in the Albizi Chapel in the destroyed church of San Pier Maggiore, Florence. Studying this painting and others recorded in 1584 by the biographer Raffaello Borghini, such as the two altarpieces for Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Madonna dell'Umiltà in Pistoia, the author reconstructs a body of works showing how in the 1580s Fei gradually went beyond the archaic style of his apprenticeship - he had been trained by Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio and Pierfrancesco Foschi, but was also marked by the Maniera of Vasari - evolving towards naturalism in both mimesis and pictorial handling. In Florence, his development partly parallels that of Santi di Tito and his circle, but Fei was also influenced by a probable sojourn during the early part of that decade in Rome, where he could have been inspired by Girolamo Muziano and the painters working for Pope Gregory XIII. Among other proposals, the author suggests that the artist was responsible for decorating the chancel of Fiesole Cathedral (c. 1584-1589), which consisted of an altarpiece, only rarely discussed by scholars, and a cycle of frescoes hitherto attributed to Nicodemo Ferrucci
This essay reconstructs the foreign policy of the Italian Communist Party during the four
years of Alessandro Natta’s secretariat (1984-1988) through largely original archival documentation,
from the Alessandro Natta Fonds of the Historical Archive of the Chamber of
Deputies. Natta’s papers are also cross-referenced with those kept in the PCI Archive at the
Gramsci Foundation. The author analyses the relationship that the PCI establishes with
Gorbachev’s Perestroika, Deng’s China, and European social democracies during the last
years of the Cold War

ABSTRACT
A quasi 2D model for the interpretation of impedance and polarization of a planar solid oxide fuel cell with interconnects
In this work, a one dimensional plus one dimensional (1D+1D) physical model of a high temperature solid oxide fuel cell (HT-SOFC) is presented. The model is distributed-charge and dynamic, and allows to predict polarization curves and impedance spectra of applicative sized planar cells (up to 10 cm x 10 cm) mounted between interconnects with rectangular ducts. The model solves rigorous conservation equations of mass, charge, momentum and energy, along the interconnect channels and within the cell's layers. The kinetic parameters of the hydrogen oxidation reaction and of the oxygen reduction reaction are fitted to a literature dataset measured between 700 °C and 800 °C, with a 20% H2, 5% H2O and 75% N2 mixture, on a standard anode-supported HT-SOFC (Ni-YSZ/YSZ/GDC/LSCF). Once calibrated, the model is used to study the evolution of local impedance spectra along the channel, as well as the occurrence of gradients of temperature, concentration, and current density within and along the cell structure. Remarkable differences emerge between global impedance spectra, based on the average current density extracted from the whole cell's surface, and local impedance spectra, based on the local current density value at each position along the channel. Local spectra reveal very specific features (negative-resistance arcs), which are absent in the average spectra, and which question the opportunity of collecting spatially resolved impedance measurements on a fine scale. The analysis of the steady state behavior highlights the severity of temperature gradients along the channel (150 K at 0.75 V and 50% H2 utilization factor), the onset of current density peaks, and the crucial role of interphase mass transport at the gas/electrode interface. The consequences of external diffusion on the polarization performance are analyzed, and the impact of different channel configurations on the local evolution of the spectra is explored
Older People and Smartphone Practices in Everyday Life: An Inquire on Digital Sociality of Italian Older Users
This paper investigates the use of smartphone in older people everyday life and it is based on an empirical research involving 30 Italian smartphone users aged 62–76. The research drawn on the analysis of 75,089 log data, 3 collective and 20 face-to-face interviews. The paper describes the digital practices through which older users use smartphone to construct social relations within their everyday life as well as elaborate their own media ideologies. The article’s findings show that participants use smartphone for a limited amount of time and mainly to access WhatsApp. The smartphone is mainly used as an organizational device for activating momentary social connections to accomplish practical tasks. The ludic use of smartphone is rarely carried out. Specifically, we observed that through the smartphone, participants put into existence three kinds of “social spaces”: 1) a working space (with peers); 2) a space of augmented co-presences (with children); 3) a space of mutual digital education (grandchildren). In conclusion we argue that the forms of sociality participants put into existence through smartphone are marked by degrees of network privatism. While the media ideology they articulate around their everyday use of smartphone can be conceived as social media phobic
