No full text
Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

Charles Reis Felix’s 1934

No full text
Abstract. Reis Felix claims he has no imagination in order to justify the closeness between his fiction and his experienced life. When editing the Portuguese translation of his short novel, Da Gama, Cary Grant, and the Election of 1934, it became clear to me that Reis Felix is being endearingly but also unnecessarily modest. For two main reasons: 1) all fiction is autobiographical; 2) by giving form to his memory, Reis Felix accomplished a magnificent work of imagination. Mainly, where was he—the alter ego of the author—in the climatic cinema scene where a young woman faces the hardship of love whilst watching an (as far as I could verify, I’m still searching) inexistent Cary Grant movie

The Amazon of Arthur Reis

No full text
In the 1960s, it was launched the book A Amazônia e a cobiça internacional, authored by amazon Arthur César Ferreira Reis. In this book, the author denounced the imminent loss of the Amazon, which was under threat of being taken by foreign nations. This speech, that arrogated for itself the authority of the history with views to settle "in true" and, therefore, to have the necessary credibility, insofar as it was under serious denunciation, required a decision by the State, which, according to the author, should colonize / civilize / develop the Amazon in order to prevent its loss to other nations aware of the economic potential represented by the region. Arthur Reis' historiographic work, which deals predominantly with Amazonian issues, culminating in his political discourse of international greed, has earned him a captive place in national public life. Therefore, understanding the paths of this discourse and its links with the political context in which it was forged is the objective of this thesis, which, besides analyzing the political uses of the past that underpinned the historical representation of Arthur Reis, also proposed to investigate the representations built about the author in the Jornal do Comércio do Amazonas and in a set of printed newspapers from the country, predominantly from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

Ricardo Reis, poeta engajado

Traditionally, the poet Fernando Pessoa is seen by the critics as an author whose works privilege subjectivity instead of social matter. However, the philosopher Theodor Adorno alerts us that even the most pure poetry could be analyzed from a materialistic point of view. In this article, we would like to apply such form of thinking to de Odes of Ricardo Reis, basing our analysis also in the concept of Literary Field, by Pierre Bourdieu.

Abstract: First Afrodescendant woman to publish a novel in Brazil and, possibly, in all Latin America; and first author of an abolitionist novel in the Portuguese language, Maria Firmina dos Reis (b: 1822- d: 1917) anticipates in many aspects the “Negritude” of the twentieth century. In Ursula (1859), in addition to subverting the Western common belief that relegated the Colored to the condition of a subhuman being, the author articulates the intersection between gender and ethnicity in order to represent patriarchy and slavery as sides of the same coin. The present work relates the author to the emergence of the narratives of the black diaspora in the Americas and attempts to reflect on the meaning and importance of this novel in the Brazilian literature of the nineteenth century. Keywords: Maria Firmina dos Reis; Patriarchy; Slavery
