Digital technology in mathematics education: Why it works (or doesn't)
The integration of digital technology confronts teachers, educators and researchers with many questions. What is the potential of ICT for learning and teaching, and which factors are decisive in making it work in the mathematics classroom? To investigate these questions, six cases from leading studies in the field are described, and decisive success factors are identified. This leads to the conclusion that crucial factors for the success of digital technology in mathematics education include the design of the digital tool and corresponding tasks exploiting the tool's pedagogical potential, the role of the teacher and the educational context
Realistic Mathematics Education of Hans Freudenthal as a subversion proposal to the leftovers from Modern Mathematics Movement in Brazil
In this article, we intend to discuss Hans Freudenthal's criticisms of the Modern Mathematics Movement and present the main elements pointed out by the author (and by other members of the Freudenthal Institute) to subvert the structuralist practices of mathematics teaching. This movement emerged in the late 1950s under the influence of study groups that discussed curriculum in mathematics teaching, with a focus on changes only in content and without concern for some didactic issues. The main source of the research is the articles and books published by Hans Freudenthal in English, available from different inventories made. We chose to work with systematic literature review, with a systematically constituted corpus. It was possible to observe that Freudenthal's criticisms of the Modern Mathematics Movement are based on how the movement was implemented and on the (mathematical and didactical) premises assumed by the followers of the movement
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
On a weak Freudenthal spectral theorem
summary:Let be an Archimedean Riesz space and \Cal P(X) its Boolean algebra of all band projections, and put \Cal P_{e}=\{P e:P\in \Cal P(X)\} and \Cal B_{e}=\{x\in X: x\wedge (e-x)=0\}, . is said to have Weak Freudenthal Property (\text{}) provided that for every the lattice lin\, \Cal P_{e} is order dense in the principal band . This notion is compared with strong and weak forms of Freudenthal spectral theorem in Archimedean Riesz spaces, studied by Veksler and Lavrič, respectively. \text{} is equivalent to -denseness of \Cal P_{e} in \Cal B_{e} for every , and every Riesz space with sufficiently many projections has \text{} (THEOREM)
Cell death and degeneration in the symbiotic dinoflagellates of the coral Stylophora pistillata during bleaching
Rising sea temperatures are increasing the incidences of mass coral bleaching (the dissociation
of the coral–algal symbiosis) and coral mortality. In this study, the effects of bleaching
(induced by elevated light and temperature) on the condition of symbiotic dinoflagellates (Symbiodinium
sp.) within the tissue of the hard coral Stylophora pistillata (Esper) were assessed using a suite
of techniques. Bleaching of S. pistillata was accompanied by declines in the maximum potential
quantum yield of photosynthesis (Fv/Fm, measured using pulse amplitude modulated [PAM] fluorometry),
an increase in the number of Sytox-green-stained algae (indicating compromised algal membrane
integrity and cell death), an increase in 2’,7’-dichlorodihydrofluroscein diacetate (H2DCFDA)-
stained algae (indicating increased oxidative stress), as well as ultrastructural changes (vacuolisation,
losses of chlorophyll, and an increase in accumulation bodies). Algae expelled from S. pistillata
exhibited a complete disorganisation of cellular contents; expelled cells contained only amorphous
material. In situ samples taken during a natural mass coral bleaching event on the Great Barrier Reef
in February 2002 also revealed a high number of Sytox-labelled algae cells in symbio. Dinoflagellate
degeneration during bleaching seems to be similar to the changes resulting from senescence-phase
cell death in cultured algae. These data support a role for oxidative stress in the mechanism of coral
bleaching and highlight the importance of algal degeneration during the bleaching of a reef coral
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Characterization of the structural response of a lithiated SiO2 / Si interface: A reactive molecular dynamics study
We report the results of a computational study regarding the mechanical properties of a lithiated Si/SiO2 interface using reactive molecular dynamics. The study is motivated by an intended application of SiO2-coated Sinanotubes as fibers in structural batteries with a fiber-reinforced composite architecture while serving as anodes. According to the results, main failure properties due to partly irreversible bond breakage during mechanical deformation are identified, indicating agreement with bond energy/bond order based estimates. Microscopic failure properties are also identified and interpreted in view of the observed processes of bonding degradation. In particular, the effect of Li distribution on the shear deformation response is evaluated as significant.Applied Mechanic

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
