No full textThis book entitled Vegetation Dynamics – Ecosystem Management, Conservation, and Protection has eight chapters, four related to vegetation dynamics and four related to monitoring and management.
In the introductory chapter, Ana Cristina Gonçalves and Teresa Fidalgo Fonseca discussed the importance of species traits and sites in the sustainability of the forest systems as well as the importance of monitoring, modelling and management. Mariana Niculescu discussed the effects of the changes in management practices, invasive species, climate change and mining on meadows and forest systems in Romania. The author pinpointed the effects of unsuitable management on the sustainability of the agroforestry systems. Overall, maintaining agroforestry sustainability, with suitable management practices, would enable regenerating vegetation.
Arvid Odland evaluated the effect of water reduction on forest floodplain wetlands. The species proportion and cover were influenced by its capacity for flowering and fruiting, which were also related to the temperature and water level. This review highlighted the importance of long-term studies as vegetation dynamics evolve slowly over time. Mallem Hamida evaluated the effect of vegetation on soil rehabilitation in pre-desert conditions, particularly in wind erosion mitigation and soil properties improvement in Algeria. Vegetation enhanced dune stabilisation due to its impact on wind erosion, and vegetation improved soil properties. However, variations were found when different species were compared. António L. Crespí et al. explored the concept of vegetation robustness and proposed a methodological approach to characterise the functional traits of vegetation and their potential correlation with environmental factors. The study indicated that the
resilience of these areas was influenced by their resistance and was linked to environmental variability, particularly geomorphological and climatic factors. Damien Hicks reviewed the influence of sampling vegetation and a set of quantitative tools to analyse data. It included the optimisation protocols to enable the use of data for different analyses, from multivariate analysis to complex statistical analysis of data with network structure, machine learning methods and Bayesian methods. Fonseca et al. conducted a comprehensive review of the traits, silviculture and management of Pseudotsuga menziesii in Portugal. The authors analysed the area potentially suitable for establishing stands of this species in Portugal, as well as its potential growth and wood properties. Iglesias et al. discussed the effects of pure, even-aged plantations of Eucalyptus globulus and invasive species on biodiversity and using an invasive species (Phytolacca americana) to produce pulp and paper. The physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of Phytolacca americana confirmed that the species is suitable for producing paper in a pulp blend of the two species

A leitura analítica incide sobre as narrativas da autora que abordam a temática da sexualidade juvenil e as suas problemáticas, com o objetivo de estudar a forma como as mesmas contribuem para a construção da identidade pessoal e sexual do potencial recetor juvenil. Desta forma, pretende-se detetar os conflitos psicológicos dos protagonistas, os seus valores e problemas, assim como os novos valores, problemas e preocupações sociais que emergem das narrativas; compreender de que forma a autora exprime a sua capacidade em observar o quotidiano e as relações humanas; identificar os pilares em que se apoia o universo social em estudo (família, escola, grupo de amigos); enquadrar as personagens numa sociedade pós-industrial e de informação que exige ao adolescente uma superação de desafios e de novos problemas.This dissertation analyzes the different representations of sexuality in Ana Saldanha’s literary work for youth. The analytical reading focuses on the author's narratives that address the issue of teenage sexuality and its problems, aiming to study their contribution in the construction of personal and sexual identity of the potential juvenile receiver. Thus, it is intended to detect the psychological conflicts of the protagonists, their values and problems, as well as the new values, social concerns and problems that emerge from the narratives; understand how the author expresses her ability to observe daily life and human relations; identify the pillars on which relies the social universe under study (family, school, friends); framing the characters in a post-industrial and information society which requires the teenager to relentlessly surmount challenges and new problems
De Rubem Fonseca a Paulo Lins: a violência na literatura dos 90
Get PDFTese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Literatura, Florianópolis, 2011Este trabalho procura verificar a forma pela qual se dá a presença da violência na literatura brasileira dos anos 1990, buscando entender o significado social dessa violência, passo necessário para se entender, inclusive, a relação entre a forma literária assentada na violência e a formação social do Brasil contemporâneo. Procuramos analisar o romance Agosto de Rubem Fonseca e entender seu significado como romance histórico nos anos 90, década em que se tentava encerrar de vez as aspirações nacionais dos anos 50, época narrada no livro. Igualmente imerso na temática da violência e revelador das características fragmentárias dos anos 90, temos o romance Cidade de Deus, de Paulo Lins, que, como romance etnográfico, procura dar voz a uma população normalmente silenciada e vítima do próprio processo de violenta modernização e falta de perspectivas dos anos 90. Diante das questões sobre a violência na literatura e em nossa própria sociedade, em sua faceta interpessoal e cotidiana, o estudo desses dois romances é importante para compreendermos não só os caminhos de nossa literatura, em termos de uma tradição literária, mas também a maneira como sua estrutura pode nos ajudar a entender a dinâmica de nossa própria sociedade nos anos 90.This work intends to verify the form in which violence is present in the Brazilian literature of the 1990´s, aiming to understand the social meaning of this violence, step required to also understand the relation between the literary form grounded on violence and the social formation of contemporary Brazil. We proceed to analyze the Rubem Fonseca´s Agosto novel trying to understand its meaning as an historic novel written during the 90´s, a decade where it was bound to finish the national aspirations so the 50´s, the narrated period. Equally immersed in the violence theme and revealing the fragmentary characteristics of the 90´s, we have Paulo Lins´s novel Cidade de Deus, which, as an ethnographic novel, intend to give voice to a population usually silenced and victim of a process of violent modernization and lack of perspectives in the 90´s. Facing questions about violence in literature and violence in our own society, in its daily interpersonal display, the study of these novels are important for the comprehension of not only the paths of our literature, in terms of a literary tradition, but also the way in which its structure can help us understand the dynamics of our own society in the 90´s

Differential stability of 2'F-ANA*RNA and ANA*RNA hybrid duplexes: roles of structure, pseudohydrogen bonding, hydration, ion uptake and flexibility
No full text14 pags., 7 figs., 3 tabs.Hybrids of RNA with arabinonucleic acids 2′F-ANA and ANA have very similar structures but strikingly different thermal stabilities. We now present a thorough study combining NMR and other biophysical methods together with state-of-the-art theoretical calculations on a fully modified 10-mer hybrid duplex. Comparison between the solution structure of 2′F-ANA•RNA and ANA•RNA hybrids indicates that the increased binding affinity of 2′F-ANA is related to several subtle differences, most importantly a favorable pseudohydrogen bond (2′F-purine H8) which contrasts with unfavorable 2′-OH-nucleobase steric interactions in the case of ANA. While both 2′F-ANA and ANA strands maintained conformations in the southern/eastern sugar pucker range, the 2′F-ANA strand's structure was more compatible with the A-like structure of a hybrid duplex. No dramatic differences are found in terms of relative hydration for the two hybrids, but the ANA•RNA duplex showed lower uptake of counterions than its 2′F-ANA•RNA counterpart. Finally, while the two hybrid duplexes are of similar rigidities, 2′F-ANA single strands may be more suitably preorganized for duplex formation. Thus the dramatically increased stability of 2′F-ANA•RNA and ANA•RNA duplexes is caused by differencesin at least four areas, of which structure and pseudohydrogen bonding are the most important. © The Author(s) 2010. Get PDFEste trabajo atraviesa parte de la historia de vida de mi mamá, Ana María Fonseca, quién constituye mi propia vivencia como mujer africana, descendiente de cabo-verdiana, nacida y criada en la isla de Príncipe, por una madre soltera que atravesó el océano bajo las necesidades violentas del dominio colonial. Sin duda, este capítulo es parte de un proceso, y ha sido uno de los más difíciles y dolorosos de escribir, dada la intimidad que presenta con la trayectoria de mi madre y de mis ancestras. Sin embargo, lo veo como necesario y urgente. Como sostiene Concepción Evaristo (2020), escreviver tiene la intención de provocar incomodidad y denuncias, se refiere a las historias que fueron y son silenciadas, sea a nivel personal o colectivo; del modo en el que yo lo veo, como un camino repleto de desafíos. Revivir los dolores de nuestro pasado no es como abordar un simple objeto de estudio, fácil de acceder. No es un lujo. La necesidad de retomar nuestras experiencias es parte de la penuria de mantener nuestra propia supervivencia. Grada Kilomba (2019) sostiene que, existe una cierta urgencia en descolonizar la mente y teorizando junto a intelectuales como Frantz Fanon, bell hooks y Philomena Essed, ella examina el legado colonial y las injusticias sociales que derivan del mismo. Considero que las reflexiones teóricas son de gran importancia, en tanto, existe la posibilidad de escribir y reflexionar a partir de nuestras historias individuales, como una forma de asegurar y dar visibilidad a nuestras vivencias reales de lucha contra nuevas formas de violación de derechos.Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació
