Dziedzictwo Stanisława Leszczyńskiego. O nauczaniu języka i kultury polskiej w Nancy – historia, wyzwania, zagrożenia
Patrycja Gardin’s aim in this article is to describe the history of teaching Polish at the University of Lorraine in Nancy, one of the few centers of Polish studies in France and also a place where classes are (still) taught at all levels of instruction, from bachelor’s degree to doctoral studies. The starting point of Gardin’s analysis is the year 1752, when Stanisław Leszczyński, King of Poland and Duke of Lorraine and Bar, established the Collège Royal de Médecine, the first university unit in Nancy. Using French archival sources, Gardin discusses large-scale activities undertaken by Leszczyński in Lorraine for the promotion of Polish culture and science. Gardin’s description of the long-standing tradition of teaching the Polish language in the Stanislavian land has been based on the analysis of annals and emigration chronicles, as well as French magazines from the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Gardin describes the most important activities and achievements of the Department of the Polish Language: its establishing in 1961, the subsequent structural transformations, its teaching programs, as well as the challenges and threats it faces. This description is complemented by the profiles of the founders and heads of the Department and an outline of their most important research projects. To this end, the author presents the most important scholarly works from two collections found at the University of Lorraine, i.e., the Decaux Collection and the Lajarrige Collection. Punktem wyjścia analizy jest rok 1752, w którym Stanisław Leszczyński, król Polski i książę Lotaryngii i Baru, powołuje Collège Royal de Médecine – pierwszą jednostkę uniwersytecką w Nancy. W tekście przywołane zostały najważniejsze wydarzenia i prace będące udziałem powołanej w 1961 roku Katedry Języka Polskiego: początki jej istnienia, zmiany w organizacji, kierunki nauczania oraz wyzwania i zagrożenia, przed którymi stoi.
The economic and fiscal impacts of Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey, a macroeconomic analysis
This report estimates the macroeconomic and fiscal impacts of Hurricane Sandy on the economy of New Jersey using the R/ECON™ forecasting model of the state’s economy. The model consists of more than 250 quarterly time-series equations and 30 employment sectors. The analysis takes into account both the economic losses resulting from the hurricane and the offsetting positive economic impacts associated with recovery and reconstruction spending in the months and years following the storm. However, the estimates of impacts depend upon the restoration expenditures actually being made. If the funds for these restoration and recovery expenditures are not made available, the offsetting positive impacts to the economy will not occur and the New Jersey economy will be significantly damaged. See Section 3 for estimates of the negative impacts if restoration expenditures are not made. This report was published as Issue Paper Number 34, January 2013, in Rutgers Regional Report

LINGUISTIC DOMAINS: KEYS TO THE MAINTENANCE OF JAVANESE
This paper deals with the language maintenance of Javanese. What most linguists, language planners, activists or official institutions have done so far is to campaign the use of Javanese in certain ‘locales’ or places, especially schools or local government offices. They rarely refer to the original notion of domains, as suggested by Fishman, so that they focus on more ‘locales’ (places or settings) than ‘topics’ (contents of communications). According to Fishman, ‘topic’ is the most crucial regulator of language use in all domains if compared to the other two factors, namely: ‘participants’ and ‘locales’. This paper is questioning whether the language policy on the language maintenance of Javanese having been done so far will be effective to meet the target
The Case of the Contradiction: Proving the Paradoxes of Nancy Drew
abstract: Since her debut in 1930, Nancy Drew has been an extremely popular character and icon for adolescent girls. Created by Edward Stratemeyer and developed by Mildred Wirt Benson and Harriet Stratemeyer Adams, Nancy Drew continues to influence and inspire generations of readers. Readers are drawn to Nancy Drew's character and her ability to escape into the world of River Heights, away from the tumultuous climate of the Great Depression and ensuing wars. Significantly, Nancy Drew's enduring power and influence stems from five cultural and social paradoxes: child v. adult, masculine v. feminine, independent v. dependent, single v. couple, and classic v. modern. This thesis explores how throughout the series, Nancy embodies each extreme of these dualities, which gives her the power to be everything to everyone. Nancy derives power from these five paradoxes, which by definition are contradictory, but afford her special privileges in her fictional world. In embodying these binaries, Nancy Drew provides adolescent readers with an escape from and a role model for adolescence and future adulthood
Zatrzaśnięte ciała, zatrzaśnięte dusze. Freud, Nancy, Jelinek
Taking as his point of departure Sigmund Freud’s famous remark on the extension of the psyche, in the first part of the article the author develops the idea of the relation between “soul,” body and space in the psychoanalytical tradition. In doing so, he refers to the interpretation given to Freud’s remark by Jean-Luc Nancy. Crucially modifying Nancy’s perspective and moving back to the psychoanalytic tradition, the author develops a general notion of das Unbehagen im Raum – the discomfort felt in space. In the second part, the author deepens this analysis by looking at a certain desperate strategy of confronting this discomfort – a strategy adopted by the protagonist of The Piano Teacher, a novel by Elfriede Jelinek
