Healing the self through spirituality in K.S Maniam's Between Lives
The quest for a meaningful life and selfhood is one of the main themes in the works of K.S Maniam, a Malaysian Literature in English author. The main characters in Maniam’s works often yearn for an inner fulfillment and enlightenment that cannot be solely addressed through the socio-political and economic means. Thus, issues such as a sense of displacement, anxiety and alienation that haunt the Malaysian Indians in Maniam’s works are not just common features of postcolonial and diasporic conditions. Rather, they are symptomatic of an existential crisis. This article explores how spirituality provides a source of healing to Sumitra, the protagonist of his novel Between Lives. It uses Advaita Vedanta, an Indian philosophy to understand the genesis of Sumitra’s existential crisis and how she can surmount it. In this novel, Maniam uses recurring motifs that eschew subject-object duality such as rites of passage, excursions and mystical experiences. These motifs reflect the concept of “oneness” of Advaita Vedanta that stresses true self (Atman) transcends materialism and corporeality. Through her spiritual journey, Sumitra critically re-examines her misidentification with the ego-identity and gains insight into the true nature of “self” and “reality”. Consequently, Sumitra finds a more viable sense of selfhood through the Hindu spiritual concept of Atman. Finally, this study suggests that spirituality provides a more dynamic view of the Malaysian Indian identity construction

Catalyst-free click cascade functionalization of unsaturated-bond-containing polymers using masked-ketene-tethering nitrile N-oxide
We developed a facile protocol for grafting-onto and cross-linking unsaturated-bond-containing common polymers via the formation of masked-ketene-functionalized polymers. The protocol utilizes a cascade functionalization agent 1 that has nitrile N-oxide and masked ketene functionalities. Through the model ligation reactions using 1, it turned out that the 1 facilitates the catalyst-free click introduction of masked ketene moieties to the unsaturated bonds such as C equivalent to N and C=C bonds, capable of undergoing catalyst-free ligation with not only a nucleophilic amine but also a neutral alcohol with low nucleophilicity. On the basis of these results, the catalyst-free grafting reactions of PEG onto EPDM and PAN using 1 were performed to afford the corresponding graft copolymers in excellent conversion yields. In addition, it was also revealed that heating of both PAN and NR with masked ketene moieties at 250 degrees C for 1 h without catalyst enables the efficient conversion to give the respective cross-linked polymers. MEDIA AUDIO VISUAL DALAM MENGEMBANGKAN KEMAMPUAN KOSA KATA BAHASA PADA ANAK USIA DINI
Children's language skills have an important role to be improved by learning to use audio-visual media in developing their language vocabulary skills because at the age of 4-5 years children should not be forced to read. The purpose of learning to use audio-visuals is to make it easier for children to recognize some words by seeing pictures on the screen, hearing sounds by playing fairy tale films so that children can increase their vocabulary, which is a little bit more. In this article the author uses a qualitative descriptive research method which is to analyze, describe, and summarize various conditions, situations from various data collected in the form of the results of interviews or observations about the problems studied that occurred in observations carried out on 13 children and interviews with group teachers. A. The data analysis was carried out by collecting data, reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study describe the improvement of children's language skills in the learning process with the help of audio-visual media. This research is expected to be a good reference or reference to improve their language skills and also make it easier for children to recognize some letters by looking at pictures that can stimulate intellectually, socially, and emotionally according to their age level. This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Taylor & Francis via the DOI in this record This article discusses four performance works which were designed to take place in street spaces. Each one set out to provoke discussion of the experience of navigating Bengaluru, India. These performances were commissioned as part of a research network project linking NIAS (Bengaluru) with the University of Exeter, UK.
Each of the works maps an aspect of Bengaluru, revealing boundaries that might otherwise escape notice. The project's concern with urbanization places an emphasis on the urban periphery, redefined by these works in terms of the peripheries of institution, discourse, identity and enclave, rather than city limits.
‘Performing the Periphery’ is an AHRC network project that is looking at the ways in which performance is engaging with and affected by urban expansion in South India. This interdisciplinary project draws together scholars from humanities, social and natural sciences to exchange perspectives on the politics of performance. The works discussed were by Lawai BemBem, Smitha Cariappa, Abhishek Hazra, and Maraa and were commissioned as part of the first phase of the project, with curatorial assistance from Sumitra Sunder. Cathy Turner is the lead researcher, working with Sharada Srinivasan (NIAS); Anindya Sinha (NIAS); Jerri Daboo (Exeter) and Anne-Katrin Fenk (MOD Institute, Berlin/Bengaluru), as well as a wider network of researchers and artists.Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC
Knowledge of and willingness to perform Hands-Only cardiopulmonary resuscitation among college students in Malaysia
Worldwide, millions of people die of sudden cardiac arrest every year. This is partly due to limited and sometimes ineffective bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The need for mouth-to-mouth contact, fear of causing harm, litigation, and the complexity of delivering CPR are the main deterrents. In view of this, the basic life support algorithm has been simplified and lay rescuers are encouraged to perform Hands-Only CPR.The objective of this study is to assess knowledge on and willingness to perform Hands-Only CPR among Malaysian college students and to determine the relationship between the two.In an online self-administered survey, college students responded to a questionnaire on demographics, exposure to CPR, knowledge on Hands-Only CPR, and their willingness to perform Hands-Only CPR in 5 different scenarios (family members or relatives, strangers, trauma victims, children, and elderly people).Data for 393 participants were analyzed. For knowledge, the mean score was 8.6±3.2 and the median score was 9. In the sample, 27% of the respondents did not attend any CPR training before, citing that they were unsure where to attend the course. The knowledge score among those who attended CPR training (M=3.6, S=2.9) was significantly higher compared to those who did not (M=6.7, S=3.0). Out of the 393 participants, 67.7%, 55%, 37.4%, 45%, and 49.1% were willing to perform Hands-Only CPR on family members or relatives, strangers, trauma victims, children, and elderly people, respectively. There were significant associations (P<.001) between knowledge and willing to perform Hands-Only CPR on family members or relatives (OR=1.32, 95% CI 1.43, 1.43), strangers (OR=1.31, 95% CI 1.21, 1.42), trauma victims (OR=1.21, 95% CI 1.12, 1.31), children (OR=1.28, 95% CI 1.19, 1.39), and elderly people (OR=1.36 95% CI 1.25, 1.48).Based on this study, knowledge on Hands-Only CPR among local college students is not encouraging. Not many know where to attend such courses. There was significant association between knowledge and willingness to perform Hands-Only CPR. © 2019 the Author(s)
