A sizeable literature has looked at deliveries to answer questions about price convergence and about the value of options embedded in commodity futures contract. The present paper focuses instead on explaining what drives deliveries and their timing, and it investigates possible feedback on futures prices when deliveries happen. We first explain the delivery process in detail, including the key role of Shipping Certificates. We then introduce the concept of Delivery Value Equivalent (DVE) as a framework for the decision-making process of whether a trader should “go for delivery” or not. Utilizing Chicago Board of Trade #2 Yellow Corn futures prices, New Orleans CIF basis quotes, and Delivery Zone 3 barge rates for all 576 delivery days over a 10-year period spanning January 2011 to April 2021, we use the DVE framework to elucidate why and when corn futures deliveries take place and their magnitudes, and to ask whether the publication by the exchange of information regarding intentions to deliver affects calendar spread prices. We show theoretically and empirically that the difference between the New Orleans basis and the DVE is a significant factor in explaining the occurrence and the number of deliveries. We document that physical market conditions and inventory levels (proxied by whether the market is in carry or not at the start of the delivery period) are essential to explaining whether deliveries (and thus convergence) begin early or late in the delivery period. Last, we do not find evidence that the release of information regarding new Shipping Certificates (which takes place between the close of the previous-day trading session and the opening of the next-day overnight trading session) impacts the nearby calendar-spread close-to-open return

Smart Cities Initiative: how to foster a quick transition towards local sustainable energy systems

    No full text
The European Commission has recently launched the Smart Cities Initiative to demonstrate and disseminate how to foster a quick transition towards local sustainable energy systems. Within this initiative, the three main challenges faced by pioneering cities, are to reduce or modify the demand for energy services, to improve the uptake of energy efficient technologies and to improve the uptake of renewables in the urban environment. We find that enough resources will need to be provided to a significant number of pioneering cities, and propose that the initiative would allocate these resources through project competition, rewarding innovation, ambition and performance, which have been ingredients of success at Member State level.Smart Cities; sustainable local energy systems; city authority incentives; EU energy policy

Bob on the tracks: analyzing Vitor Ramil's transcreations of Bob Dylan's lyrics

    No full text
Abstract: This thesis examines the Portuguese versions created by Brazilian composer Vitor Ramil of four songs by the North-American songwriter Bob Dylan: "Joey," 'Gotta Serve Somebody," "You're a Big Girl Now," and 'Sara". Vitor Ramil respectively transformed them into "Joquim," "Um dia você vai servir a alguém," "Só você manda em você," and "Ana." The practice of song translation imposes various constraints that the translator must navigate in order to achieve a satisfactory result. Even keeping this in mind while collating the song lyrics, it becomes clear that the Brazilian versions were not produced with a consistent concern for fidelity at the level of individual words or expressions from the source text. My hypothesis is that these songs could not be considered entirely new texts either, devoid of strong connections to their source texts. Imbued with the concepts of transcreation (after Haroldo de Campos), refraction (after André Lefevere) and song translation (after Peter Low) and considering the context of life and work of the artists involved, this thesis investigates the ways in which these translations diverge from the originals - but, more importantly, the ways in which they converge. What emerges here is not only the presence of the phenomenon of refraction but also the practice of transcreation

Resenha do Livro: PARO, Vitor Henrique. Diretor escolar: educador ou gerente?

    No full text
Vitor Paro. Escola Básica. Abstract: In this book, Vitor Paro questions the educational policies based on capitalist business management whose end is radically distinct from that of education. In capitalist production, efficiency in management aims at corporate profitability, and workers’ main interest is to get monthly paid. In education, management mediates the educational activity, and educators cannot teach exclusively oriented by their wages. It is therefore necessary to take into account the political dimension of the relation among the players in order to produce the historical human being. Based on this assumption, the author analyses the role of the school principal and the significance of school management, as well as he offers transcending alternatives to the basic school management centralized in the hands of a single individual. Keywords: School management.
