Whether or not we agree with the growing opinion that “Traditional teaching and learning methods are becoming less effective at engaging students and motivating them to achieve” (Gitsaki et al., 2013: 1), the use of technology in English language teaching and learning is increasing. Technology is moving from being a supplementary resource (e.g. language labs, Computer Assisted Language Learning) to a means of language instruction and practice, made increasingly easier by personal and mobile devices. However, it is well recognized that the successful integration of new technologies in education is dependent on teachers (Mumtaz, 2000; Albrini, 2004; Judson, 2006; Keengwe et al., 2008; Rossing et al., 2012). Their personal beliefs, assumptions and attitudes to technology will influence the acceptance, use, effectiveness and success of new initiatives; therefore, teachers who are required to implement change need sufficient time, support and training, without which they are unlikely to see the value and affordances of new technology. It is important, then, that teachers in this environment are effectively prepared for potential changes in classroom practice (Ess, 2009) and supported in ongoing learning (Abadiano & Turner, 2004; Borko, 2004).https://doi.org/10.1057/9781137440068_9pubpu

    Measurement of the ratio of prompt χ c to J / ψ production in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    The prompt production of charmonium χ c and J / ψ states is studied in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. The χ c and J / ψ mesons are identified through their decays χ c → J / ψ γ and J / ψ → μ + μ - using 36 pb - 1 of data collected by the LHCb detector in 2010. The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for χ c and J / ψ, σ (χ c → J / ψ γ) / σ (J / ψ), is determined as a function of the J / ψ transverse momentum in the range 2 < p T J / ψ < 15 GeV / c. The results are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order non-relativistic expectations and show a significant discrepancy compared with the colour singlet model prediction at leading order, especially in the low p T J / ψ region

    Charm production at the LHC in pp collisions at s√=7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. The decays D0→K−π+, D+→K−π+π+, D⁎+→D0(K−π+)π+, D+s→ϕ(K−K+)π+, Λ+c→pK−π+, and their charge conjugates are analysed in a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 15 nb−1. Differential cross-sections dσ/dpT are measured for prompt production of the five charmed hadron species in bins of transverse momentum and rapidity in the region 0&#60;pT&#60;8 GeV/c and 2.0&#60;y&#60;4.5. Theoretical predictions are compared to the measured differential cross-sections. The integrated cross-sections of the charm hadrons are computed in the above pT-y range, and their ratios are reported. A combination of the five integrated cross-section measurements gives σ(cc¯)pT&#60;8 GeV/c,2.0&#60;y&#60;4.5=1419±12(stat)±116(syst)±65(frag) μb, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the fragmentation functions

    Tradition, Natural Law, and Rational Disagreement : Ethics in Alasdair MacIntyre and C. S. Lewis

    Deep disagreement in ethics is a common and well-recognized phenomenon, arising when people view an issue from different, incommensurable perspectives. Its pervasiveness can tempt us to doubt the power of reason, question the existence or efficacy of a natural law, and fall into moral relativism or subjectivism. Alasdair MacIntyre&apos;s account of ethics tries to rescue rationality, rebuff relativism, and vindicate the natural law with an account of how, even in a seemingly intractable conflict of theories, rational enquiry and progress is possible. In so doing, MacIntyre&apos;s arguments are strikingly similar to points C. S. Lewis makes about tradition, enquiry, and the natural law in his book The Abolition of Man. However, each author approaches these topics in different ways and with different emphases. This thesis begins with a detailed account of MacIntyre&apos;s views and some of the criticisms that can be raised against it. The second chapter then examines C. S. Lewis&apos; arguments and compares them with MacIntyre&apos;s account of ethics. The final chapter gives a combined picture of moral argumentation, showing ways in which each author can help address objectionable gaps in the other&apos;s arguments about tradition, reason, and the natural law
