Bilingualism of Indonesian-English in Article Titles: A Case Study in Indonesian Mechanical Engineering Articles
Bilingualism happens not only orally but also in written Indonesian articles. Usually, the articles use Indonesian and English terms. Bilingualism even can be seen in the articles? titles. One of the fields that often use bilingual terms is found in Mechanical Engineering's articles. It happens because mechanical engineering has specialized terminology that sometimes untranslated into Indonesian terms. Many Indonesian experts have translated many English books with many variations of translation results. Therefore, the translation results are still questioned whether they are acceptable or not in Indonesian. This study aims to examine the factors of bilingualisms by observing titles of articles and finding the translation methods to translate the terminology from English to Indonesian. This study was qualitative research; by using questionnaires and observation, the research reveals that the main factor is untranslatability, where the English terminology cannot find its equivalent meaning in Indonesian. By using Molina and Albir's translation techniques, researchers reveal that the English terminologies can be translated in Indonesian using (1) amplification, (2) borrowing, (3) established equivalence, (4) calque, and (5) literal translation. This study concludes that the untranslatability problem can be solved when the experts try to use the accepted translation results rather than using English terms

Difficulties of Non-English Study Program Students in Taking the TOEFL-Like Test at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta: A Case Study of UMY Economics Study Program Students batch 2022
This study aims to examine TOEFL-like results and the challenges faced by non-English-speaking students attempting TOEFL-like questions. This examination utilized a subjective illustrative technique, with an example size of 30 understudies chosen through purposive inspecting from a more extensive populace of 100 understudies. Interviews and a TOEFL-like test are two methods of data collection. According to the data, participants found Structure and Written Expression to be the most challenging of the three sections of the TOEFL-like test, followed by Reading Comprehension and Listening Comprehension. It is possible to draw the conclusion that non-English study program students face the greatest difficulty on the TOEFL-like Structure and Written Expression section. The Design was appraised as more troublesome than the Composed Articulation part. The Reading Comprehension section is the second most challenging for students. The data indicate that the most challenging aspect of Reading Comprehension is the identification of difficult words; however, subjects, explanatory sentences, and references are deemed easier than the others. The Listening Comprehension section appears to be the most straightforward. They have trouble following conversations that are both long and short in length. Overall, this study reveals the specific challenges that non-English study program students face when answering TOEFL-like exam questions, highlighting areas in which they need additional support and attention to improve their language learning prospects
Translation Techniques of Mechanical Engineering Terms in
Translators often face challenges when dealing with unfamiliar terms, particularly in specialized fields like mechanical engineering. This study investigates the translation techniques employed by students in the Mechanical Engineering Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta, Indonesia, when translating texts from English for Engineering textbook. The research involved six classes, each with 35-40 students, and applied 18 translation techniques based on Molina & Albir’s (2002) theory. The study revealed that literal translation (57.89%) and natural borrowing (29.82%) are the most frequently used techniques, ensuring precision and clarity in technical documentation. However, common translation errors include inconsistent terminology, lack of context, and failure to localize technical terms. The results suggest that students’ translation choices are influenced by their limited English vocabulary and reliance on English reference materials. Recommendations include enhancing students’ vocabulary and translation skills to improve accuracy and consistency in technical translations, thereby supporting better global collaboration in mechanical engineering
ANALISIS WACANA PERCAKAPAN DALAM KOMEDI SITUASI THE IT CROWD SERI 1
This research describes the analysis of conversation in the English
conversation transcription of the situational comedy The IT Crowd season 1. The
researcher examines four problems, 1) the discourse of dialogue in the conversation
transcription of the situational comedy The IT Crowd season 1, 2) the conversation
organizations in the conversation transcription of the situational comedy The IT
Crowd season 1, 3) the contexts in the conversation transcription of the situational
comedy The IT Crowd season 1, 4) the breaking of cooperative principle in the
situational comedy The IT Crowd season 1.
In analyzing the research data, the researcher utilized the theory of
conversation by Cutting (2008: 26), the theory of dialogue discourse by Wijana
(1995: 330-331), the theory of exchange structure by Cutting (2008: 22), the theory
of conversation analysis by Cutting (2008: 22), Levinson (1983: 287) and Finnegan
(1992: 315), and also the theory of context by Cutting (2008: 5). The researcher
utilized the observation method to observe the language used in the conversation
transcription of the situational comedy The IT Crowd season 1. Next, the researcher
utilized the transcribing technique to transcribe the conversation in that situational
comedy. Then, the data was categorized into dialogues and conversation. In the
dialogue category, it was divided into two categories, one-turned-complex dialogues
and multiple-turned-complex dialogues. After that, those dialogues were categorized
based on the steps of dialogue process: initiation (I), respond (R), and feedback or
follow-up (F). In the conversation category, the data were divided into two categories
based on the turn to speak: turn-taking and adjacency pairs. Besides that, the
conversations were also categorized based on the sequences: opening, insertion, and
closing.
From this research, the researcher can conclude three results: 1) the
conversations in this situational comedy belong to complex dialogues, including oneturned-
complex dialogues and multiple-turned-complex dialogues. In a dialogue,
there are three steps: initiation (I), respond (R), and feedback or follow-up (F). In
fact, not all the dialogues were closed by F, and not all of them follow the sequence:
I-R-I-R (F). 2) Some natural things happen and distract the organization of CA that
consists of turn-taking, adjacency pairs, and sequences, such as interruption, overlap,
attribute silence, repair, and dispreferred. The process of conversation depends on the
participants themselves. 3) Context as the basic of participants understanding in
doing a conversation is divided into three: situational context, background knowledge
context, and co-textual context. From each type of context, the researcher can observe
the relationship of each participant. The closer their relationship, the easier they
understand the conversation. 4) The cooperative principles is intentionally broken to
create the humor
Reclaiming Women‟s power by eatery names in two multicultural cities
As patriarchy is not solely based on sexuality, energizing women requires enhancing their intellect and state of mind. It is considered a gesture of respect to refer to a married woman by the name of her husband or eldest son. Women's public participation is still deemed devalued, as evidenced by the naming of restaurants. This study examines eatery names in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and Malacca, Malaysia, two cities with similar historical backgrounds. It aims to investigate women's efforts to improve their negotiating position in society by naming their eateries. Although two restaurants place women in powerful positions, many still need help to attain women's positions and social respect
