This study analyzes French media framing toward political personalization by Emmanuel Macron (EM) and Marine Le Pen (MLP). Data collection was carried out with the help of NVIVO’s linguistic tools to see trend in lexical forms and lingual expressions used by the media and social media. This research is expected to become a discourse analysis research model based on the interactional system between participants in French politics, particularly those related to national identity

ABSTRACT. This research attempts to analyses a discourse with the interactionist approach in the field of political communication. In this field, the utterances of a politician reflect his/her culture and contain elements of subjectivity. The politician, therefore, uses subjective or individual utterances (the elocutive) to reflect his/her identity, status, and position in his/her interaction with the audience. The objects of this study are seven speeches of Nicolas Sarkozy delivered between 2006 and 2011, and these were the most significant speeches during his presidential campaign and his presidency. The first step to conduct an interactionist analysis is collecting the data to compile a lexicographic corpus. This is to develop a reading grid for each speech and identify persuasive markers or traces that are found in each of the speeches by using the lexical table of Lexico3 software. The frequency of the use lexical forms that are parts of Nicolas Sarkozy's discursive strategy are subsequently analyzed and interpreted by using the theories proposed by Charaudeau (1992), Gumperz (1989), and Van Dijk (2007). The findings of this study show that subjective utterances support interactional communication process and hold the power of symbols. With these findings, this study can contribute to the making of the model of discursive strategy analysis with the interactionist approach. Keywords: elocution, political discourse, identity, subjective statement

KONSTRUKSI YAHUDI DI BARAT DAN TIMUR: ANALISIS MULTIMODAL HALLIDAY PADA NOVEL GRAFIS

This research aims to analyze how Jewish identity is constructed in the West and the East, as represented in the graphic novels Fagin the Jew by Will Eisner and The Last Jew in Penang by Zayn Gregory and Arif Rafhan , using Halliday\u27s multimodal approach. This approach focuses on various modes of communication, such as verbal, visual, gestural, and spatial, in constructing the narrative of Jewish identity in both novels. Fagin the Jew portrays Jewish identity in the Western context, specifically in 19th-century London, emphasizing antisemitic stereotypes and social marginalization. In contrast, The Last Jew in Penang depicts Jewish identity in the multicultural environment of Southeast Asia, where Jewish identity is more accepted and assimilated into the local community. The findings reveal that cultural differences significantly influence the representation of Jewish identity in these two novels. Through an analysis of verbal, visual, gestural, and spatial modes, it is found that Western graphic novels tend to depict Jewish identity in narratives of prejudice and alienation, while Eastern graphic novels highlight narratives of coexistence and adaptation. This research concludes that multimodality plays a crucial role in reflecting the complexity of Jewish identity shaped by differing historical, social, and cultural contexts in the West and the East

The issue of immigration became prominent in French political discourse in 2005 that leads to debate about France and nationalism. During the lead-up to the 2007 French Presidential election, various concepts of a French national identity were promoted by candidates: Nicolas Sarkozy, Ségolene Royal, François Bayrou, and Jean-Marie Le Pen. Candidates gave particular attention to ethos, specifically ethos émotif. In this article, the researcher will characterize the ethos émotif presented by the four candidates mentioned above. The ethos will be then examined whether it were successfully embodied in these candidates' speeches by investigating the public reaction they received based on articles published in the French media. This research will apply a critical discourse analysis and interactional sociolinguistics approach using elements of interaction formulated by Stébe (2008) and Kerbrat-Orecchioni (1990). Data will be classified using the software LEXICO 3

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Language as a part of the study of communication is often used to build individuals\u27 "image," especially amongst people (such as YouTubers) who are well known to the public. In linguistics, one\u27s use of specific language to express oneself is called one\u27s language style. Language styles serve as "signs," through which users create concepts of themselves and their personalities. As such, individuals\u27 language styles usually have specific purposes and functions. This study will examine the language style used by Cyprien, a French media YouTuber, and its functions using the theory of Catherine Fromilhague using qualitative approach. Its corpus draws on data from Cyprien\u27s five most popular videos (as ascertained based on the number of viewers), which were accessed through YouTube media. The data were obtained by viewing these videos and noting the utterances and language styles used. Afterward, data were classified and analyzed based on the language style used and its function. This research finds that eleven language styles were used, with different frequencies. These styles served argumentative, ornamental, and cognitive functions. The conclusion of this study are used to draw viewers\u27 interest and stave off boredom, thereby ensuring that they are willing to follow Cyprien\u27s channel. At the same time, these language styles are used for a range of purposes, including emphasizing essential points and creating rhythm
