TriAna: An image triangulation visualization and analysis tool
At the University of Chile, prof. dr. N. Hitschfeld Kahler is conducting research on the automatic generation of meshes in both 2D- and 3D-environments based on images or 3D-models. At the moment she is researching the analysis of images of tree stems by generating 2D meshes of triangles (triangulations) over the image and retrieving data based on these triangulations and the image, for example the amount of tree rings and specific data about the climate in the region from where the tree originated. The analyses performed using this method could be faster than performing them using traditional pixel calculations. However, the current tools that are available for research are inadequate in three aspects. First of all, they're simplistic, non-intuitive tools that aren't designed for useful interaction but only create a single, simple output. They lack any kind of advanced functionality that could help speed up the research. Secondly, the program has little extendability and reusability, meaning it's difficult to improve the functionality and to modify it for different research within the same domain. And lastly, the triangulation algorithm and tools were produced as research for the Integrated Systems Laboratory (IIS), ETH Z who retain ownership of them. This means that prof. N. Hitschfeld Kahler currently doesn't have the required permissions to continue her research with the current tools. Our job was to create a visual tool which solved the previously mentioned weaknesses and which would enable an easy way to integrate a new triangulation algorithm and implement new tools to analyse the triangulations in conjunction with the images. We've named the program 'triAna', 'short for triangulation analysis . This report will discuss the process and results of our project. First we'll give a progress report of the entire project. The analysis of the requirements and the design of triAna will be discussed in the consequent chapters. The implementation and its problems and solutions will be discussed thereafter.Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc
Santiago Pérez Triana (1898-1916) and the Pan-Americanization of the Monroe Doctrine
In recent years, historians have focused on efforts at the turn of the 20th century by Alejandro Álvarez, Luis María Drago, and Baltasar Brum (all Southern Cone diplomats) to foster continental cooperation by Pan-Americanizing the Monroe Doctrine. Overlooked in this endeavor are the remarkable activities of Colombian author, journalist, and diplomat, Santiago Pérez Triana. Using primary and secondary sources, this article analyzes Pérez Triana’s support of the Drago Doctrine at the 1907 Hague Convention, his speeches at the Pan-American Financial Conference in 1915, and his essays published in Hispania, a journal that he edited between 1912 and 1916, to show how he won the respect of American and European diplomats by emerging as an influential spokesman for Pan-Americanizing the Monroe Doctrine and for hemispheric unity.Nos últimos anos, os historiadores têm se concentrado nos esforços realizados a começos do século XX por Alejandro Álvarez, Luis María Drago e Baltasar Brum (todos diplomáticos do Cone Sul) para fomentar a cooperação continental mediante a pan-americanização da Doutrina Monroe. “No somos gitanos”: Cracking the Code of the Kale Blacksmiths of Early Modern Triana
This ethnographically informed micro-history focuses on the Romani (Kale) blacksmiths of the Triana neighborhood in Seville in the long sixteen century, emphasizing the importance of place for this community. So often the Romani are generally assumed to have little connection to a singular location because they are “inherently nomadic wanderers.” They are portrayed in paintings, plays, poems, and laws as drifters who seek the freedom of the road to the detriment of society. This dissertation presents a starkly different reality of these blacksmithing families from Triana, focusing on this neighborhood as it was home to a notable Kale population since their arrival into the Iberian Peninsula in the fifteenth century. By focusing at the community level we now see specific ways in which this group, often assumed to exist at the margins, in fact played a central role in a centrally important trade for the ever-expanding Spanish Empire. These families, living on Castilla Street for approximately 150 years were experts in producing screws and other small iron works known as chapurrería. It appears that the Kale blacksmiths of Triana were the primary producers of small iron works in the city of Seville for centuries, and specifically for various types of ships constructed and repaired in Seville’s bustling ship building industry. The research for this dissertation is archivally based but also draws from evidence of material culture to connect Kalo individuals who would have otherwise remained historically invisible. This dissertation will also explore the process of ethnic reclassification which has contributed to the archival invisibility of the Kale, touching on the concept of race in early modern Spain. This work brings to light the story of a community who has remained largely invisible, but who played an important role in the Spanish economy both in Spain and the Americas.Embargo status: Restricted until 01/2174.
In this paper the author analyses the career of several families of portuguese sailors and pilots who settled down in Triana quarter during the 16th century, and their matrimonial strategies focused on the reproduction of the human and economic capital which based their social success, and their different ways to integrate in the sevillian society. The author shows the secular evolution of those strategies of social and familiar growing and integration, where we can notice a slow evolution by which the maritime professions were becoming less important comparing to mercantile and speculative activities (with real estate or annuities), which led to the fourth and fifth generations to neglect the maritime professions, which had been one of the main features of an important part of the portuguese population in the 16th century Seville. This was an historical and social process
common to other families and professional sectors in the Spanish Monarchy.Área de Historia del Arte, Departamento de Geografía, Historia y Filosofía. Universidad Pablo de OlavidePreprin
