Makroszkóp alatt Paks II vitája: argumentatív stratégiák és koalíciók az atomenergia diskurzusában
The Relevance of Moral Emotional Appeals in Environmental Political Debates
This paper examines the relevance of moral emotional appeals in the mixed dialogue type of public debates between politicians about environmentalism, relying on the concepts of goals and emotional appeals from the informal logical tradition. This paper argues that if argumentative moves are evaluated according to the action-producing dialogue type’s collective goal which could be pressing for action on environmentalism, and politicians take on the role of emotional entrepreneurs, then moral emotional appeals by politicians could evoke moral emotions in the audience, thus encouraging them to become more environmentally friendly. The influence of moral emotions on individual sustainable choices is based on empirical research from political and environmental sciences.
Scare Tactics, Media Capture and the Pandemic: Argumentative Style in the Online News Media
This research explores argumentative style in institutional context of the news media, analysing the three aspects of strategic maneuvering. I present a case study from Hungary where the media can be described as mono-polar and statist commercialized. The Government and the pro-government media viewed the coronavirus as a further opportunity to delegitimize the non-government media by claiming that they spread scary rumours and fake news. I carry out the argumentative analysis of this phenomenon
Virtuális vitatér - A Paks 2 polilógus hyperlinkhálózatának elemzése
A kutatás célja a virtuális vitatér koncepciójának értelmezése Paks 2 példáján keresztül.
The debate on the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant does not only take place in the Parliament, at roundtables or public forums but on the Internet as well. The discourse on Paks 2 is polylogical as multiple players pursue various positions across many places. Political parties, companies, scientific and expert institutes, environmentalists and pro-nuclear associations have the opportunity to connect with each other on their websites with hyperlinks. This paper utilizes the IssueCrawler software to identify the relevant actors based on their online activities, visualizes their hyperlink network, and with the qualitative analysis of their websites categorizes the hyperlinks as cordial or critical. This paper aims to examine the concept of virtual debate-space with the Paks 2 issue
Becoming friends: The influence of climate change on European nuclear narratives
Nuclear energy has been an important part of global energy production for the last 60 years. Following the Fukushima accident in 2011, several European countries decided to phase out nuclear energy production. Safety concerns, planning and implementation delays, and increasing costs of nuclear power plants, together with the technological development and the rapidly decreasing cost of renewable energy production forecasted a fundamental restructuring of European energy production. However, with the rapid rise of climate change to the forefront of discourse, perception regarding nuclear energy started shifting and resulted in more leniency towards nuclear energy, as well as the increase of its public acceptance. The public mood is currently influenced and represented by two different narratives. Some people consider nuclear energy essential in the fight against climate change. Others believe that nuclear energy is a wrong answer to the climate crisis. Our research looks at how European public perceives environmental modernisation through the lens of nuclear energy perception.Environmental modernisation (EM) offers a framework to conceptualise the interrelation of economic growth, environmental protection, and energy security (Machin, 2019). Interpreting environmental modernisation as a policy discourse interprets environmental protection as an economic activity (Hajer, 1997). Baker (2007) claims that EM aspires to provide a solution to the ecological crisis through economic growth. The dominance of economic over environmental considerations driving economic development is reflected by the ‘soft’ and ‘hard’ interpretations of EM.In 2022, specific nuclear activities and conditions have been set in the EU taxonomy, a classification system of environmentally sustainable economic activities, to help accelerate the shift from fossil fuels. The EU taxonomy was created to meet the EU’s climate and energy targets for 2030, and reach the objectives of the European green deal. The European Commission prescribed two periods for feedback on the so-called Draft Act and the Roadmap in 2020, where they invited all EU organisations and individuals to share their views on the proposed taxonomy. This research focuses on the feedback provided by company/business organizations, business associations, NGOs, environmental organizations and academic/research institutions from both periods. It analyses how commenters framed the relationship between climate change and nuclear energy. Using frame analysis combines the advantages of quantitative content analysis and qualitative discourse analysis by identifying framing devices in the text and reconstructing the reasoning of the text.As an outcome of the research the modelling the approaches will contribute to the understanding of how the European public perceives the relation of nuclear energy and climate change, and if a ‘soft’ or a ‘hard’ approach to environmental modernisation prevails.ReferencesBaker, S., 2007. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Nuclear perceptions from radioactive blue to sustainable green: The EU taxonomy as reflection of a divided public
Following the Fukushima disaster, several European countries revisited their policies and decided to phase out nuclear energy production. More recently, however, the EU taxonomy proposed a classification system of environmentally sustainable economic activities and consequently reopened the debate regarding nuclear energy. This study analyses public comments about the inclusion or exclusion of nuclear energy as a response to climate change, in the conceptual frameworks of ecological modernization, sustainability and technological neutrality. The study highlights the challenge of shaping energy policies amid dynamic circumstances and diverse viewpoints. Proponents of nuclear energy emphasised its low‐carbon emissions and climate change mitigation potential, while opponents focused on issues of radioactive waste and environmental risks. The study reveals that sustainability emerges as a potential reconciling framework to match arguments to influence the EU's decision‐making, while it reflects the political primacy of this process. Finally, this research recommends improving feedback visibility and enhancing clear communication, and suggests further research directions to understand future EU nuclear energy policies
