Ghali Amin Oral History
Galal Amin was an economics professor the American University in Cairo from the late 1970s through the early 2000s, in addition to being a renowned Egyptian public intellectual, author, and columnist. He describes his father, a prominent academic, and outlines his own early education and life as a graduate student in London, and early career as an economist in Kuwait. He mentions early teaching stints at AUC starting in 1967, contrasting the social class of students then with those in later years, and tells how he came permanently to AUC later in the 1970s. Amin briefly outlines changes in the Economics department over the years, and offers some commentary on AUC students (specifically changes in academic quality over time). He also speaks about the university’s relationship with Egyptian politics and government, including an anecdote about an AUC committee he served on after the 1973 war. His research interests and writings are also covered

Qasim Amin y John Stuart Mill: las razones de la esclavitud femenina
Qasim Amin (1863/5-1908) was not the first Arab author in the context of contemporary Islam who wrote and campaigned for the liberation of women, but has been considered the first theorist and the antecedent par excellence in the history of the Egyptian feminist movement. The aim of this paper is to characterize the author feminism in relation to its assessment of the crisis in the Arab world. In particular, I focus on the following issues: Amin’s thesis on female slavery and the relationship between its causes and reformism of the author, according to the criteria he himself points out: freedom and common interest. To further characterize his position, I also consider Amin’s thesis in relation to some of the criticisms and proposals of Stuart Mill on the subjugation of women, one of his sources of inspiration.
Drought Forecasting Using SPI and EDI under RCP-8.5 Climate Change Scenarios for Langat River Basin, Malaysia
AbstractIn Malaysia, droughts often lead to water deficit and overcoming a lack of fresh water has become one of the important challenges in the country. Climate change have brought about a big environmental impact globally, such as the rise in sea levels, unavailability of fresh portal water and more extreme drought and flood events occurring and Malaysia is no different and not spared all this calamities. The Langat River Basin is located in a fast growing region in Peninsular Malaysia, the Greater Kuala Lumpur Valley and hence the implementation of the drought index in this basin is vital important and necessary. Normally drought characteristics can be determined or identified using the drought indices. The two drought indices were used in this study, namely the SPI (Standardized Precipitation Index) and the EDI (Effective Drought Index) to assess the severity, duration and extend of drought event. The CanESM2 outputs under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 8.5 emission scenario of IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) were utilized to produce regionalized precipitation and temperature data. The GCM outputs were statistically downscaled using the Statistical Downscaling Model (SDSM) version 4.2.9. Next, the SPI for time scale period of 1-month, 6-months and 12-months (SPI-1, SPI-6 and SPI-12) and EDI were calculated for both the observed and statistically downscaled climate data to investigate and analyze the severity and extent of drought. Both indices were compared to get a more operational index between SPI-1, SPI-6, SPI-12 and EDI outlook for representing Malaysia drought events

Improvise interface design of UTHM academic online resources e-learning system (author) / Azizul Zamri Muhamed Amin
Education is very important especially in these challenging times. Various technologies day by day are growing, also the current educational technology. If in the past the traditional delivery of education there should be a lecturer in front and students listened to what the lecturer presented orally. Now keeping pace with technology education where knowledge is delivered not only in accordance with the timetable in the classroom, but can also be delivered on-line and accessible regardless of time and place restrictions call as blended learning techniques. Blended learning is used to deliver knowledge among technology websites, videos, interactive cd, multimedia equipment and many more. The availability of this technology has triggered a variety of learning techniques such as blended learning. There are so many systems that can can support learning techniques process such as Online Academic Online Resources (AUTHOR), an e-learning system used by UTHM. A learning management system must be developed with creativity and innovative features in terms of interface design and system capability to ensure the effectiveness of the system for lecturers and students. Therefore the purpose of this study is to find out why lecturers and students at the Faculty Of Computer Science and Information Technology, UTHM are not fully utilized this e-learning system (AUTHOR). The findings shows that through the development of a workable prototype with improvise interface design using blended learning concept can be applied in this e-learning system (AUTHOR). Hopefully with this improvised interface design will attract the lecturers and students more to fully utilized this system in the future
Impact of scour on lateral resistance of wind turbine monopiles: An experimental study
The majority of offshore wind structures are supported on large-diameter, rigid monopile foundations. These piles may be subjected to scour due to the waves and currents that causes a loss of soil support and consequently decreases the pile capacity and system stiffness. The results of numerical models suggest that the shape of the scour hole affects the magnitude of pile capacity loss; however, there is a dearth of experimental test data that quantify this effect. This paper presents a series of centrifuge model tests on an instrumented model pile that investigates the effects of scour-hole geometry on the response of a laterally loaded pile embedded in sand. The pile instrumentation allowed load–displacement and p–y (soil reaction – displacement) curves to be derived. Three scour geometries (global, local wide, and local narrow) and three scour depths (1D, 1.5D, and 2D; where D is pile diameter) were modelled. For all three scour types, pile moment capacity decreased almost linearly with increase of scour depth. Simple empirical relations were proposed to evaluate the detrimental influence of scour on the pile moment capacity. A new method has been developed to allow designers to quantify the effect of scour-hole shape and severity of scour on the pile response.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Geo-engineerin
The Concept Integration Of Science and Theology M. Amin Abdullah\u27s Perspective
There is a debate among several sciences because there is no room for discussion so each science claims it is right. The current era deserves the spirit of integration of science to overcome this, especially between science and religion (theology). The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze the concept of integration of science and theology from the perspective of M. Amin Abdullah. The method that researchers use is a literature study, data is analyzed based on content (content analyze). After analysis, conclusions are drawn. The results showed that the integration of M. Amin Abdullah\u27s science was called the spider web. He revealed that spider webs have a theoanthropocentric-integralistic pattern. The integration of science between science and religion (theology) has special implications for Islamic education for example, environmental theology which in Islamic education is taught the importance of environmental conservation. Thus, the integration of science with religion (theology) provides awareness to every human being to protect the environment as well as grounding environmental theology and cultivating clean living
