In Search of the Author of Chronica Polonorum Ascribed to Gallus Anonymus: A Stylometric Reconnaissance

    No full text
The article deals with the question of authorship of the thirteenth-century Chronica Polonorum (or Gesta principium Polonorum [The Deeds of the Princes of the Poles]), also known as The Polish Chronicle. It seeks to verify the hypothesis, recently reproposed by Tomasz Jasiński, whereby the author was of Venetian origin. The hypothesis is namely based on the textual similarities observed between Translatio Sancti Nicolai by an author referred to as the ‘Monk of Lido’ (Monachus Littorensis) and the Chronica. The attribution attempt put forth by M. Eder is based upon stylometric methods that measure the frequencies of the most frequent words in the texts under research (mainly, conjunctions, prepositions, pronouns, and particles) which are subsequently subjected to cluster analysis, multidimensional scaling, or principal components analysis. The outcome of the experiment in question has demonstrated a strong resemblance between the Translatio Sancti Nicolai and the Polish Chronicle, which may be regarded as an substantial argument in support of the Venetian background hypothesis

V intervjujih s projektanti in nepremičninskimi agenti smo dobili vpogled v praktične izkušnje in ustaljeno prakso. Energy efficiency (EE) and renewable energy sources (RES) are terms that are becoming widely used. The construction industry is developing and using new high quality materials and new building technologies that are less harmful to the environment. The diploma paper includes the analysis of government solutions and regulations in the area of energy saving in the renovation of old buildings as well as the design of new buildings in Slovenia. We researched the differences in technical restrictions between the old and new regulations, analysed them and presented the innovations and their claims. We demonstrated the development, design and methodology of making the energy certificate for buildings and legal limitations. By interviewing project engineers and estate agents, we gained insight into the practical experiences and established practice. The acquired results show that we have made a step forward in achieving efficient use of energy in buildings by placing bigger demands on the designing and building stages. The complexity of the calculation methodology and compliance of EE and RES indicates the increased need for new, updated teaching material in this area

V raziskavi so sodelovali učenci prvega, tretjega in petega razreda mariborske osnovne šole. The thesis deals with the attitude of young children towards art works as one of the important areas of artistic development of children. The theoretical part defines the observation and perception in a general sense as well as the observation and perception of art works in the educational process. It also includes layers of art work, which are important for the understanding of the thesis. Because the thesis is focused not only on younger elementary pupils, but also on the observation and evaluation of art works, a part describing how to choose and evaluate appropriate art works, and how to evaluate in art education, is also included. The last part is dedicated to equally important parts of art education, the exhibition of works of art, visits to galleries and excursions. The aim of this thesis is to determine the pupils’ attitude towards selected art works, how they view, describe and evaluate them, and also what emotions individual reproductions of art works awake in pupils. Pupils from the first, third and fifth grade of elementary school in Maribor participated in the survey. The data were gathered by using interview as the research method, and were later analyzed by transcribing them. The findings showed that the fifth grade pupils are more receptive to art works than younger pupils, their emotional reactions were different and depended on the individual works, most of which evoked positive feelings. At the same time, we found that the pupils of all three classes can easily identify the difference between two art works, but only when they belong to different art fields

Topic modeling, long texts and the best number of topics. Some Problems and solutions

    No full text
The main aim of this article is to present the results of different experiments focused on the problem of model fitting process in topic modeling and its accuracy when applied to long texts. At the same time, in fact, the digital era has made available both enormous quantities of textual data and technological advances that have facilitated the development of techniques to automate the data coding and analysis processes. In the ambit of topic modeling, different procedures were born in order to analyze larger and larger collections of texts, namely corpora, but this has posed, and continues to pose, a series of methodological questions that urgently need to be resolved. Therefore, through a series of different experiments, this article is based on the following consideration: taking into account Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), a generative probabilistic model (Blei et al. in J Mach Learn Res 3:993–1022, 2003; Blei and Lafferty in: Srivastava, Sahami (eds) Text mining: classification, clustering, and applications, Chapman & Hall/CRC Press, Cambridge, 2009; Griffiths and Steyvers in Proc Natl Acad Sci USA (PNAS), 101(Supplement 1):5228–5235, 2004), the problem of fitting model is crucial because the LDA algorithm demands that the number of topics is specified a priori. Needles to say, the number of topics to detect in a corpus is a parameter which affect the analysis results. Since there is a lack of experiments applied to long texts, our article tries to shed new light on the complex relationship between texts’ length and the optimal number of topics. In the conclusions, we present a clear-cut power-law relation between the optimal number of topics and the analyzed sample size, and we formulate it in a form of a mathematical model
