Sustainable community forestry management in Lombok, Indonesia

Deforestation is a serious problem in Indonesia as a result of forest concessions that were granted by the government to private companies. The forest destruction was also caused by the encroachment by villagers during the political chaos and lack of law enforcement following the collapse of the New Order regime in 1998. In Lombok, villagers entered forests around their village, logged the trees and occupied the forests to plant fruit trees. As a response to this encroachment, the Indonesian government encouraged local participation by involving communities in forest management, which eventually developed into a community forestry management scheme. However, improper management by the forest farmers has generated negative externalities, primarily a reduction in the quantity and quality of water supply produced from the forest. To address the negative externalities problem, the local government in West Lombok developed a system of Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES). Importantly, the PES program in West Lombok was integrated with the Community Forestry program, designed for forest conservation and poverty alleviation. This study investigates the impact of the integrated Community Forestry and PES programs on local forest conservation and socio-economic improvement. The study utilises “participatory econometrics” as a mixed quantitative and qualitative research method. The research included in-depth interviews, field visits, surveys, a focus group discussion and aerial photo analysis. This thesis found that the PES program in West Lombok is a hybrid system that combines Coasean and Pigouvian theory. In conjunction with the Community Forestry program, the PES program could produce a sustainable outcome in the long term. This is confirmed by empirical evidence, as integrated PES and the Community Forestry program accommodates local needs, and can be used as a tool for forest conservation and the improvement of socio-economic conditions in the long term. Keywords: Community forestry, Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES), Forest conservation, Poverty alleviation

The Role of Carbon Market in Net Zero Emission: Economic Impact of Carbon Credit and Forest Conservation in Indonesia

Purpose: This study analyzes the role of the carbon market in achieving Net Zero Emissions, focusing on how carbon credit development and tropical forest conservation can create new economic opportunities in Indonesia.Method: This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, using a case study of the REDD+ project in Indonesia. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with various stakeholders, including government officials, local communities, and environmental organizations. Thematic analysis was utilized to identify key patterns related to the economic benefits and technical challenges of the carbon market.Result: The study finds that the carbon market can provide substantial economic benefits through carbon credit trading, attracting investments in green technology and sustainability programs. It also has the potential to raise awareness of the importance of conserving tropical forests as critical carbon sinks. However, challenges such as regulatory gaps, limited community participation in decision-making, and technological constraints for monitoring and reporting must be addressed.Practical Implications for Economic Growth and Development: Indonesia can harness the carbon market to drive sustainable economic growth while supporting environmental preservation and global carbon emission reductions. Active stakeholder engagement, technological capacity building, and regulatory strengthening are crucial for the successful implementation of the carbon market in the future

Exploring the Causal Relationship Between Economic Growth and Farmer’s Exchange Rate: Evidence from West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia

Economic growth is influenced by various factors, including the contribution of the agricultural sector. Within the micro-analysis of this sector, the farmer's exchange rate (NTP) can impact the rate of economic growth in a region. This study analyzes the causal relationship between economic growth and NTP in West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia using the Granger causality test. The findings reveal no significant causal relationship between economic growth and NTP. The study recommends further research to explore and assess other micro variables that may influence economic growth, thereby enabling policymakers to implement strategies that strengthen the agricultural sector's contribution to economic development

The Role of Stakeholders as Moderation on the Effect of Visioning, Affiliating, Altuiristic and Autonomous on Intention to act as a Local Champion in Tourism Villages

Local champions play an important role in the development of tourism villages. This research aims to determine the influence of characteristics of local champion: visioning, affiliating, Altruistic and autonomous toward Intention to act as a Local Champion in tourism villages, which is moderated by the role of stakeholders. This quantitative research involved 115 respondents from five tourism villages in Lombok. Data was collected using questionnaire and analysed using Smart-PLS. The results show that visionary, Altruistic and autonomous have positive and significant effects on Intention to act as a Local Champion. Meanwhile, affiliating has a negative and insignificant effect. Interestingly, the role of stakeholders is unable to moderate the influence of visionary, affiliated, Altruistic and autonomous on Intention to act as a Local Champion. The current study provides recommendations for community empowerment activities, especially in tourism villages

One of the steps taken to maintain and rehabilitate forest resources is to raise conservation funds from drinking water customers, which can be packaged in an environmental services payment scheme or PES. By taking the case of forest resource management in Central Lombok Indonesia, this study used the Contingent Valuation Method to find possible willingness to pay of drinking water customers for environmental service contributions. This study found that the willingness to pay (WTP) of drinking water customers for environmental service contributions that reflecting the economic valuation of Central Lombok Forest resources was an average of Rp. 3,260 (0.23 USD) per month. Factors that influence the magnitude of such values are The Level of Education, Income, Number of family members, and environmental awareness

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
