    No full text
The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between manufacturing location choices and firms competitiveness in high-cost countries by analyzing different strategies of location choices. This research question will be covered in two chapters. Chapter 1 analysis the impact of COO on companies offshoring and reshoring decisions in order to achieve competitive advantage. In particular it offers some insights on main motivations of offshoring and reshoring strategies, the main attractive indicators of these locations where manufacturing activities are established and finally the COO seen as an indicator of competitive advantage for firms that operate in offshoring/reshoring process. While other studies focus only on investigating the role of COO on both offshoring and reshoring strategies, this study aims in analyzing in specific how COM and COD as two components of COO influence on firms’ manufacturing location choices. A multiple case studies of 8 Italian manufacturing firms that operate in fashion industry is conduct in order to clarify better this issue. Chapter 2 investigates the relationship between different strategies of manufacturing location choices and innovation. In particular it aims to examine the importance of co-location of R&D and manufacturing first, and second the relationship between the latter and different strategies of manufacturing location choices in high-cost countries. The methodology used in this chapter consists on a cluster analysis of 37 Italian firms that operate in fashion industry. In both chapters Italian manufacturing firms are used as unit of analysis in order to investigate the relationship between different strategies of location choices and firms’ competitiveness. While most of the studies on internationalization of production focus more on analyzing emerging countries, this study aims to leverage the role of high-cost countries as an opportunity for manufacturing firms to gain competitive advantage. For instance, high-cost countries are seen as a possibility for firms to get innovation, access to skills and where there is high perception of product “made in” (Bailey & De Propris, 2014; Gray et al., 2017). In particular, firms that operate in fashion industry are recently subject of study of internationalization of production influencing firms location choices (Global Powers of Luxury Goods, 2018). After analyzing each chapter, the rest of the thesis describes the main findings of the research and ends with some discussions and conclusions.

The paper examines the system of fortifications on the Adriatic coast in the large stretch belonging to the Papal State which had to face the Turkish danger and piracy attacks. Between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries, privateering was one of the greatest dangers for coastal towns. The protective barrier was made up of towers, guard posts and more complex structures that presented a complex fortified configuration, to counter the enemy and make the landing safe, allowing trade and fishing activity. Unfortunately, collapses, neglect, earthquakes, and bombings but also a series of voluntary demolitions due to the massive urban growth have made illegible this coastal defence system. Among the most interesting castles, we can examine the ancient Adriatic castle of Firmum in the Marche Region. Its importance is demonstrated by a series of documents, between the 14th and 18th centuries and in particular by the inspections of military engineers to verify the state of the fortifications and prepare a military barrier. A new reading of these documents, rich in information and drawings, together with the new surveys of the still existing fortifications is particularly interesting for understanding the defence methods of the Adriatic coast

    No full text
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyze how important is co-location of R&D and production for firms originated from high-cost countries and to provide evidence of the relationship between the different strategies of location choices and co-location. Design/methodology/approach – In order to investigate the relationship between R&D/design-production co-location and strategies of location choices for production, this paper uses a cluster analysis of 37 Italian firms that operate in fashion industry. Findings – This article finds that co-location results in a dominant strategy for firms under the following conditions: high level of product customization, coordination difficulties between R&D and production, rapid change in production process technologies and product complexity difficult to be coded. Research limitations/implications – This paper presents some limitations in that it focuses only on fashion industry without considering other sectors. Practical implications – This paper has some managerial implication in that offers some insight on decision making in organization. In particular offers some insights of how important is having an internal R&D/design function rather than collaborating with external designers in order to achieve competitive advantage in terms of product quality, product design and also brand name reputation. Originality/value – This paper suggests that the co-location of R&D and production may improve the firms’ performance considering the need for constant interaction between the two units. Moreover, it suggests that the co-location of R&D and production both within and external (within the firms’ region and/or within the country) to the firms might be important. Furthermore, larger firms in terms of turnover have a greater preference to locate the R&D function close to the production function

Technology is everywhere--entwined in almost every part of our culture. It affects how we live, work, play, and most importantly how we learn. With mobile and other wireless devices like the IoT becoming an increasing requirement across every industry today, it only makes sense that our schools are also effectively deploying technology in the classroom. The impact that technology has had on today’s schools has been quite significant. This widespread adoption of technology has completely changed how teachers teach and students learn. Teachers are learning how to teach with emerging technologies (tablets, iPods, Smart Boards, digital cameras, computers), while students are using advanced technology to shape how they learn. Technology occupies an important place within students’ lives. When they are not in school, just about everything that they do is connected in some way to technology. By integrating technology into the classroom, teachers are changing the way they used to teach (lectures six hours a day). Examples of technology that are relatively simple include overhead projectors and televisions. Then we have the slightly more advanced uses of technology such as lab equipment (microscopes, virtual labs, kits for sequencing DNA etc.). In this study, students investigate how to use technology to deepen and broaden their knowledge, specifically that of biology. Students will learn the importance of scientific research. The method used for acquiring the necessary data is from the use of questionnaires and tests. The study is focused on classes in the private and public schools. During teaching hours, beside the traditional method, were used computers and projectors to better describe various elements of biology. During laboratory hours, with the help of simulators and virtual laboratories, they were able to practice firsthand what was learned during lectures, for example, by using 3-D simulators that are able to simulate elements of biology, students learn more about molecules, ADN, proteins. In the end, the results of the questionnaires form the different classes, those using the simulators and those not using them, were compared, to see which method yielded the better results and benefited more
