    In vitro inhibition effects on erythrocyte carbonic anhydrase I and II and structure-activity relationships of cumarylthiazole derivatives

    Coumarin and heterocyclic compounds incorporating urea have clinical applications as antiepileptics, diuretics, and antiglaucoma agents due to their carbonic anhydrase inhibitory properties. We investigated inhibition of carbonic anhydrase I and II with a series of coumarylthiazole derivatives containing urea/thiourea groups. All the investigated compounds exhibited inhibitory activity on both hCA I and hCA II, with 1-(3-chlorophenyl)-3-(4-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)thiazol-2-yl)urea being the strongest inhibitor. Structure-activity relationship study showed that most of urea derivatives were more inhibiting for hCA I and hCA II than thiourea derivatives. The electron-withdrawing groups at the phenyl ring increased the inhibitory activity compared to electron-donating groups

Therefore, magnesium alloys without aluminum that can withstand higher operating temperatures are of interest to the automotive industry. The objective of this work is to develop Al-free Mg alloys for industrial applications. In the current work, four types of alloys were produced with varying La contents. The high-pressure die casting method was selected to overcome the problems inherent in the gravity casting method with respect to the production of parts with complex shapes and thin walls. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the base alloy (Mg-5Sn wt%) comprises of alpha-Mg and Mg2Sn phases whereas La containing alloys included intermetallic phases such as LaMg3, Mg17La2, and La5Sn3. Corresponding grain sizes of the alloys with La are lower than those of the Mg5Sn alloy. Due to this lower grain size and emerging dispersoids, the tensile strength of the Mg5Sn4La alloy (205 MPa) is roughly double that of Mg5Sn. Moreover, the addition of the 4% wt. La to the Mg5Sn alloys led to an increase in yield strength and ductility by 25% and 50%, respectively

    Daytime Sleepiness in University Students and Internet Addiction as the Determinant

    PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to determine daytime sleepiness in university students and its relationship with internet addiction as the determinant. METHOD: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used. Study population consisted of 1,150 first- and fourth-year students studying in some faculties at a university located in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkey. FINDINGS: In this study, it was determined that the students obtained a mean score of 5.9 ± 2.1 points from the daytime sleepiness scale and the rate of those with daytime sleepiness problem was 17.9%. Furthermore, 52.3% of the students had a sleep duration of 7-8 hours. An increase in internet addiction mean score increases the risk of daytime sleepiness approximately one time. CONCLUSIONS: Increase of internet addiction score increases the risk of daytime sleepiness approximately one time

The obtained results indicate a good harmony among the calculated and the experimental FT-IR, Raman, UV vis.     Daytime sleepiness and related factors in nursing students

    WOS: 000416187800006PubMed ID: 28918361Background: Evaluation of the frequency and causes of daytime sleepiness in nursing students because it is an important factor in improving the health status of the students, controlling sleep problems, improving students' academic achievements, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of daytime sleepiness in nursing students and the factors associated with it. Design: A cross-sectional research design was used in this study. Participants: Nursing students (n = 382). Method: Data were collected using a questionnaire prepared by the authors to assess socio-demographic characteristics, sleep habits, and problems of nursing students and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), which assesses daytime sleepiness. Descriptive statistics included numbers, percentages, mean, median, and standard deviation. Mann-Whitney U test (Z) and Kruskal-Wallis (KW) analysis of variance were used for evaluating the relationship between ESS scores and independent variables. Results: The prevalence of daytime sleepiness in the students was found to be 10.5%. Those in the 2nd grade, who were married, who did not consume coffee or tea, lived alone, regarded their own academic achievement as poor, and used the Internet during morning hours experienced increased daytime sleepiness. Moreover, students who talk in their sleep, grind their teeth, feel restless before sleep, experience problems in falling asleep, and wake up at night were found to experience increased daytime sleepiness. Conclusions: Daytime sleepiness is a considerably common health problem in nursing students. This study found that daytime sleepiness is associated with individual characteristics, lifestyle and consumption habits, and sleep habits

    Dynamics of GeoGebra ecosystem in mathematics education

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the trends of GeoGebra related studies. We focused on the articles published between 2009 and 2021 and existed in Web of Science database. The bibliometric analysis of the GeoGebra related articles exposed four-clustered structure according to the degree of relationships among terms that reflect the articles. The clusters were identified as learner anatomy (the use of GeoGebra to improve students' mathematics learning), teaching analytics (the role of GeoGebra in mathematics teaching), technological focus (the technological and procedural issues), and conceptual extension (the attempts considering the features of GeoGebra, mathematics topics and skills). This study offers evidence to show trends and practices in GeoGebra related studies, as well as to clarify their relationships with other concepts. The investigation into GeoGebra's dynamics would help researchers, teachers, students, and policymakers gain insight into areas that need further research, as well as plan for future studies

    INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE IN THE ELDERLY WOMEN, RISK FACTORS, COPING STRATEGIES AND HEALTH CONSEQUENCES: A QUALITATIVE STUDY

    WOS: 000422906900012Introduction: Intimate partner violence is a global public health problem that causes physical, sexual and psychological harm to elderly women. Materials and Method: The present qualitative study was conducted on 8 elderly women living at a nursing home, who were the victims of IPV in the past. The aim of the current study was to reveal the health consequences of their experiences of intimate partner violence, its risk factors and their coping strategies. Focus group interview method was used in our study. Qualitative content analysis method was employed as a data analysis method. Results: In the focus group interviews, it was observed that elder women were mostly exposed to physical, verbal, emotional violence and that they generally decided to remain silent against the violence, showed patience, took refuge in God, and they were affected psychologically in the long term. Marriage at a young age, economic status, gender roles, and traditional structure, religious believes and values appear as significant risk factors for intimate partner violence in elderly women. Conclusion: The results of the present study suggest that elderly women have been considerably affected by domestic violence. However, these women did not react to violence due to traditional social structure and tried to cope with it through religion. It is suggested that nurses should evaluate elderly women at nursing home in terms of intimate partner violence

    Forty Years of Mathematics Education: 1980-2019

    The purpose of this study is to establish the evolution and expose the trends of research in mathematics education between 1980 and 2019. The bibliometric analysis of the articles in Web of Science database indicated four-clustered structure. The first cluster covers the items related to the theoretical framework of mathematics education whereas the second cluster has the terms defining the methods for effective mathematics instruction. The third cluster includes the concepts interrelated to mathematics education while the fourth cluster encloses the studies about international mathematics assessments. The earlier studies look mathematics education mostly in students. perspective and investigates generalization, restructuring, interiorization and representation. Between 1995 and 2010, curriculum and teacher-related factors were dominant in mathematics education studies. After 2010, the articles investigated specific topics and carried the traces from all stakeholders in mathematics education. The investigation on the trends of mathematics education would provide gain insight about the areas that need more research, contribute to the researchers, teachers, students and policy makers in this field and light the way for further studies
