Edward Schumacher-Matos Lecture
Born in Colombia, Schumacher-Matos was in the U.S. illegally from age 14 until age 21, when he went to court, was allowed to declare his citizenship, and joined the Army to serve in Vietnam. He was educated at Vanderbilt University and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, served as a Fulbright Fellow in Japan, and as a Bi-National Commission Fellow in Spain. He also was executive director of the Spanish Institute in New York, a nonprofit dedicated to U.S.-Spanish political, economic and cultural affairs. The Robert F. Kennedy Professor for Latin American Studies at Harvard University, Schumacher-Matos is also a Shorenstein Fellow on the Press, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard\u27s Kennedy School of Government, where he teaches a graduate seminar on immigration from Latin America into the U.S. and is writing a book on the subject. Schumacher-Matos applies his rich experiences—immigrant, soldier, reporter, editor, publisher, author, ombudsman, professor, academic fellow—to his weekly, syndicated column on national and international affairs. His work has appeared in the influential journal Foreign Affairs, and he has published numerous op-ed articles, which, he says, express the value of human dignity over self-righteousness and realism over wishful thinking. His talk was the keynote address of Susquehanna University\u27s 16th annual Latino Symposium

“PERCEPCIÓN DE LA AUTOMEDICACIÓN CON ANTIBIÓTICOS EN LOS
USUARIOS EXTERNOS DE UN HOSPITAL PÚBLICO EN LIMA PERÚ”
AUTOR: Dr. Leonel Christian Martínez Cevallos
ASESOR: Dr. Eduardo Demetrio Matos Prado

The infinity of anthologies: Gregório de Matos thesis is a compilation with a list of covers, poems, verses, notes, themes and dates taken as data for supporting the thesis that the baroque poet constitutes himself as an artist author from the anthological practice since always. The simplicity of this assertion hardly hides the complexity of demonstrating, therefore, that, from his poetic discourse in the Portuguese colony to the canonization in Brazilian literature, there is a historical movement of reading the Gregório de Matos‘ works, which repeats itself: the leading of an author from the unapprehensible immensity to the partial unitary in books; whose cycles of anthologies emerge according to which the integrated chapters of this study are organized. An approach to the anthological practice faces the problematic of describing the story about Gregório de Matos‘ establishment as an author via crystalized poetic reception of anthological publications. The research enables the accomplishment of the general objective on understanding the reception of the poet‘s work about the reflection on different reading embodiments promoted-propitiated by anthologies. From the selected books set reading, after collecting them in bookshops and libraries, we have come to the inferential considerations on the anthological practice from the cover to the paratexts. Therefore, we take off from the general question on the work‘s reception of the sixteenth-century writer, documented by anthologists, as from the general hypothesis that the editions of the Gregorian work was conditioned by the historical determinants from each reception period. To verify this hypothesis, we observe the current anthologies in front of the reading horizon of Gregorian‘s legacy, propitiated by the poetic making of when it was published and also by the current theoretical presuppositions of art studies in the seventeenth century. This procedure is operated through a dialogue with the critical fortune dedicated to the seventeenth-century author, mainly the Haroldo de Campos and Augusto de Campos‘ criticism to the Gregorian legacy, as well as the Francisco Ivan‘s essay on baroque poetry, in addition to Adolfo Hansen and Marcello Moreira‘s research on colonial letters. The infinity of anthologies reaffirms the literature history‘s importance on aiming to review the poetic legacy‘s judgment in different periods, according to the social circumstances from each time and Gregorio de Matos‘s work understandment from romanticism to modernism, until contemporaneity. Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen, Segismundo Spina, James Amado, Hélio Pólvora, Gilfrancisco, André Seffrin, Iuri Pereira, João Adolfo Hansen and Marcello Moreira are editors‘ names of Gregório de Matos‘ poetry. They are responsible for bringing the anthological cycles to life and for carrying on the seventeenth-century poetries‘ anthological practice for brazilian readers.

GREGÓRIO DE MATOS GUERRA’S POETIC CORPUS AS AN ANALOGY FOR THE DUALITY OF COLONIAL BRAZIL
In this thesis I propose a model of analysis for Gregório de Matos Guerras poetry based on the scholarly understanding of his Satirical poetry as a representation of Colonial Brazil as a body in decay. The comparison between the Colony and Matos Guerra\u27s poetry allows for the dramatization of the tension in the Colony\u27s life: on one hand, the new land is seen as a virtuous paradise; and, on the other, as a place where its people and resources are exploited and corrupted. The first view of the Colony is depicted by Matos Guerra Lyrical poetry, thus, in the first chapter I argue that a comparison can be drawn between Matos Guerra\u27s amorous lyricism and the Ufanist views of Colonial Brazil by analyzing the following poems: \u27Discreta e formosíssima Maria\u27, \u27A uma dama dormindo junto a uma fonte\u27, \u27Ao Rio Caípe recorre o queixoso poeta de que sua senhora admite por esposo outro sujeito\u27 and \u27Desenganos da vida humana, metaforicamente\u27. In these poems, the author presents the idea of Carpe Diem as celebratory of the richness and abundance of the New World, combined with the concept of the feminine Muse in perfect harmony with Nature. The other view of the new land is analogous to the author\u27s Erotic poetry in the sense that the sexual drive present in these poems is comparable to the corruption within the higher levels of Colonial society. Matos Guerra\u27s choice for vulgar expressions infers a critique of the moral decadence of the clergy and the immoral behavior of the white aristocracy, especially men. These elements will be seen in the poems I analyze in chapter two: \u27Pica-Flor\u27, \u27Necessidades forçosas da natureza humana\u27 and \u27Minha Rica Mulatinha\u27. In my conclusion I argue that Gregório de Matos Guerra\u27s Lyrical and Erotic poetry create an analogical construction of Colonial Brazil. This construction demonstrates the tensions between Brazil as a paradise and Brazil as a corrupt and decadent body. It is most likely that the same model of Brazil as body could be applied to Matos Guerra\u27s Religious poetry, thus confirming the contribution made by this thesis
EU E TU, CAMINHEIROS: NARLAN MATOS E A ODISSEIA DO CAMINHO
This article proposes a reading of the road and the path in the work "Eu e tu: caminhos dessa vida" (2019), by bahian poet Narlan Matos. Drawing on a dialogue with Homer's “Odyssey”, through the theme of Ulysses's return and homecoming, Narlan Matos's poetry presents a double division: the first, with 71 poems, the second, with 13 other poems. In both parts of this journey, the author emphasized the power of a poiesis of memory in connection with his homeland, Itaquara. Thus, between the poet and the poetry, readers are invited to a convivial collective of the road and the path, the travelers facing the common challenges of human life between the ephemeral and the eternal.
Keywords: Narlan Matos. Odyssey. Return.
