Women's attitudes towards mechanisms of action of family planning methods: survey in primary health centres in Pamplona, Spain
Irala J de, Lopez del Burgo C, Lopez de Fez CM, Arredondo J, Mikolajczyk RT, Stanford JB. Women's attitudes towards mechanisms of action of family planning methods: survey in primary health centres in Pamplona, Spain. BMC Women's Health. 2007;7(1): 10.Background: Informed consent in family planning includes knowledge of mechanism of action. Some methods of family planning occasionally work after fertilization. Knowing about postfertilization effects may be important to some women before choosing a certain family planning method. The objective of this survey is to explore women's attitudes towards postfertilization effects of family planning methods, and beliefs and characteristics possibly associated with those attitudes. Methods: Cross-sectional survey in a sample of 755 potentially fertile women, aged 18–49, from Primary Care Health Centres in Pamplona, Spain. Participants were given a 30-item, self-administered, anonymous questionnaire about family planning methods and medical and surgical abortion. Logistic regression was used to identify variables associated with women's attitudes towards postfertilization effects. Results: The response rate was 80%. The majority of women were married, held an academic degree and had no children. Forty percent of women would not consider using a method that may work after fertilization but before implantation and 57% would not consider using one that may work after implantation. While 35.3% of the sample would stop using a method if they learned that it sometimes works after fertilization, this percentage increased to 56.3% when referring to a method that sometimes works after implantation. Women who believe that human life begins at fertilization and those who consider it is important to distinguish between natural and induced embryo loss were less likely to consider the use of a method with postfertilization effects. Conclusion: Information about potential postfertilization effects of family planning methods may influence women's acceptance and choice of a particular family planning method. Additional studies in other populations are necessary to evaluate whether these beliefs are important to those populations
Grafitos sobre cerámica —ibéricos, latinos, griegos y signos— procedentes del yacimiento romanorrepublicano de La Cabañeta (El Burgo de Ebro, Zaragoza)
This paper presents an interesting group of inscriptions made on pottery, unearthed during the archaeological excavations carried out in the site called La Cabañeta (El Burgo de Ebro, Zaragoza), from 1997 to 2009. Included are fourteen Iberian documents written in Paleohispanic script, twenty-two in Latin, two in Greek, eight signs and four difficult to identify marks, all of them dated between the second half of the II century B.C. and the destruction of the settlement in the decade of the 70s of the I century B.C.En este trabajo se presenta un interesante conjunto de inscripciones realizadas sobre cerámica, recuperadas durante las diferentes intervenciones arqueológicas practicadas en el yacimiento de La Cabañeta (El Burgo de Ebro, Zaragoza), desde el año 1997 hasta el 2009. En él se incluyen catorce documentos ibéricos escritos en signario paleohispánico, veintidós latinos, dos griegos, ocho signos y cuatro marcas de difícil adscripción, todos ellos fechables entre la segunda mitad del s. II a. C. y la destrucción del asentamiento en la década de los 70 del s. I a. C
Three Decades of Spanish Communication Research: Towards Legal Age
This paper analyses the evolution of Spanish communication research published as scientific articles between 1980 and 2010. It quantifies the volume of this production with two different samples: the first sample includes national journals and offers original and unprecedented data; the second one includes international journals, defined as those indexed by the Web of Science. As a whole, more than 6,000 articles were analysed. Additionally, the collaboration patterns in authorship and internationality were also studied. On the one hand, collaboration was measured through indicators of multiple authorship and the evolution of coauthorship indexes. On the other hand, internationality was measured through the share of Spanish authors in international journals, the weight of international collaborations and the language used in national journals. Data obtained illustrate a growth and maturity process of communication as a scientific discipline: at the end of the period analysed, a tension between growing collaboration and internationalization and traditional publication patterns was found. Through the period studied, the birth of new faculties with communication studies and the growing number of journals have feed the own growth of the number of articles. However, other elements such as scientific assessment have also played a role in the internationalization of authors. As a whole, this article offers a first image of the evolution of communication as an academic discipline in Spain

Synthesis of new hexamethylenetetramine-based products (HMT-R) in UV-irradiated pre-cometary ice analogues
Context. Laboratory experiments mimicking irradiation of ice mantles under astrophysically relevant conditions, in particular those prevailing in dense interstellar cloud interiors and the cold zones of protoplanetary discs, drive the formation of complex organic species. A fraction of these molecules are refractory at room temperature and constitute what is known as the organic refractory residue. Aims. Because hexamethylenetetramine (HMT, (CH2)6N4) is one of the most abundant residue components, we study here the molecules based on HMT that are also present in these residues. Methods. H2O:CH3OH:NH3 ice mixtures were irradiated with a UV lamp that reproduces the emission spectrum of secondary UV photons in dense clouds. Ice formation and irradiation were conducted under high vacuum conditions at 80 K in these experiments. A solution of the residues was analysed by means of gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GCMS). Results. Some HMT-based family members are reported here for the first time. These species could therefore be produced in icy dust grains exposed to radiation and warmed up to temperatures above 200 K. The side groups R in HMT-R derivatives provide information about the radicals that were present in the irradiated ice; these radicals were also the likely precursors of cometary species inferred from COSAC-Rosetta data. On the other hand, although HMT has been searched for unsuccessfully in comet 67P, it has been identified in meteorites. Moreover, some of the HMT derivatives reported in this study were previously detected in the Murchison meteorite. This work therefore opens the possibility of detecting new HMT-based molecules in pristine objects of the Solar System. This research was funded by projects PID2020-118974GBC21 and PID2023-151513NB-C21 by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, and the National Science and Technology Council, Taiwan, under grant no. Nimodipine selectively stimulates β-amyloid 1-42 secretion by a mechanism independent of calcium influx blockage
Several lines of evidence indicate that perturbed cellular Ca2+ homeostasis may play a prominent role in synaptic dysfunction and neuronal death in Alzheimer's disease (AD), suggesting a potential benefit of drugs capable to stabilize Ca2+ homeostasis. We here investigated the effects of a panel of L-type Ca2+ channel antagonists on the secretion of the amyloid beta-peptide (Abeta), which abnormally accumulates in the senile plaques of the brain of AD patients. We found that, in primary and immortalized neuronal cells in culture, nimodipine robustly stimulated secretion (up to about four-fold at 30 microM) of the highly amyloidogenic 42-residue isoform of Abeta (Abeta42), while leaving largely unaffected total Abeta secretion. An analogous effect was also observed in vivo, as the administration of a single dose of nimodipine (10 mg/kg i.p.) induced a significant rise of Abeta42 levels in plasma of Tg2576 mice. The effect of nimodipine was independent of blockage of L-type Ca2+ channels and capacitative calcium entry. Accordingly, nimodipine effect was largely Ca2+-independent, as neither depletion nor rise of extracellular Ca2+ abolished it. Hence, by showing that the effect of nimodipine on Abeta42 production is distinct from its ability to block Ca2+-influx pathways, we provide evidence for a previously uncharacterized effect of this long known molecule also used in clinical practice
Intermediate Resolution Near-Infrared Spectroscopy of 36 late-M Dwarfs
We present observations of 36 late-M dwarfs obtained with the KeckII/NIRSPEC in the J-band at a resolution of ∼20,000. We have measured projected rotational velocities, absolute radial velocities, and pseudo-equivalent widths of atomic lines. 12 of our targets did not have previous measurements in the literature. For the other 24 targets, we confirm previously reported measurements. We find that 13 stars from our sample have v sin i below our measurement threshold (12 km s⁻¹) whereas four of our targets are fast rotators ( sin > 30 km s⁻¹). As fast rotation causes spectral features to be washed out, stars with low projected rotational velocities are sought for radial velocity surveys. At our intermediate spectral resolution we have confirmed theidentification of neutral atomic lines reported in McLean et al. (2007). We also calculated pseudo-equivalent widths (p-EW) of 12 atomic lines. Our results confirm that the p-EW of K I lines are strongly dependent on spectral types. We observe that the p-EW of Fe I and Mn I lines remain fairly constant with later spectral type. We suggest that those lines are particularly suitable for deriving metallicities for late-M dwarfs
