In 1962, a 23-year-old Quebecer named Robert Daudelin travels to Paris to explore European cinema that had not yet crossed the Atlantic. Daudelin and his equally young friend Jean-Pierre Lefebvre - two years before the latter would direct his first film - enroll at the Sorbonne, specifically at the Institute of Filmology. Indeed, well before he himself would lead the Cinémathèque québécoise for three decades, Daudelin sought access to the Cinémathèque française. A student visa was necessary to enter the country, and to access the archives. The somewhat mysterious Institute of Filmology seemed ideal for this purpose: easy admission, quick registration, and minimal academic requirements - there wouldn't even be any classes. However, three days after the two young men's arrival, the institution would already have to close its doors: it turned out that, for nearly fifteen years, it had been a secret laboratory for the French army and intelligence services. In this short documentary, Robert Daudelin bears witness to the moment when he inadvertently found himself at the forefront of a political scandal involving the (very young) discipline of film studies, a scandal that may have erased from its field any notion of 'filmology.'En 1962, un Québécois de 23 ans nommé Robert Daudelin se rend à Paris pour y découvrir les œuvres cinématographiques européennes qui n’avaient alors pas encore eu l’occasion de traverser l’Atlantique.

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Euro area governance: What went wrong in the euro area? How to repair it? Bruegel Policy Contribution 2010/05, June 2010
Bruegel Director Jean Pisani-Ferry focuses on the institutional response to the euro area crisis with the Van Rompuy Task Force being set up to reform economic governance. The task force is due to present its progress report shortly and the author examines two basic questions in this context– what went wrong in the euro area (and the lessons learnt from this) and consequently what are the three choices for reforming governance. He explains why implementation of existing rules need to be strengthened and why the Van Rompuy Task Force should revisit the fundamental principles on which the EMU is founded and resist the temptation to solely address divergences

Authorship in the Interstices of History, Biography, Reality and Memory: Histoire(s) du cinéma and Cabra Marcado para Morrer

Workshop on the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) and peer review journals in Europe : a report
A workshop on the Open Archives Initiative and Peer Review Journals in Europe was held at CERN, in Geneva, from March 22nd to 24th. The purpose of this workshop was to mobilise a group of European scientists and librarians who want to play an active role in organizing a self-managed system for electronic scholarly communication. Such a system should be compliant with the technical standards proposed by the Open Archives Initiative (OAI). The immediate deployment of OAI-compliant e-print repositories was a concrete objective of the workshop. The workshop had a second (exploratory) objective, related to the certification of writings submitted to archives
