'A piece of fine meshwork': the intertwining fiction of Philip Roth and Edna O'Brien
This thesis comprises a comparative analysis of the works the Irish author Edna O’Brien and her contemporary and friend, the Jewish-American author Philip Roth. It investigates the striking biographical, textual and stylistic symmetries between two writers from very different cultures and literary traditions. The thesis begins with the, until now, undetected intertextual nexuses between Roth’s fiction and O’Brien’s. These allusions significantly alter the readings of a number of their novels, while at the same time indicating wider transatlantic frames of reference now apparent in their work. O’Brien has, since the beginning of her career, been in frequent correspondence with all of the pre-eminent Jewish-American authors of her time, and her work conducts a dialogue with key Jewish-American texts. Conversely, Roth’s fiction—like O’Brien’s, obviously indebted to Joyce—has frequently alluded to other seminal Irish authors. The literary and personal relationship of Roth and O’Brien symbolize myriad links between Jewish and Irish literary cultures. In O’Brien’s (and wider Irish) fiction, the Jew is often positioned as an exotic but dangerous “Other”. Equally, throughout the Jewish canon Irish Catholics are frequently employed as foils. Roth and O’Brien investigate difference by depicting relationships that cross these boundaries. Through understanding the complex interrelations at play between the fiction of Roth and O’Brien, and between their work and that of a wider pantheon of Irish and American writers, this thesis will reposition both as transnational authors while developing a culturally sensitive, textually nuanced account of their transatlantic literary relations
To be or not to be Sade: Philip Roth, "Sabbath's Theater" and Libertine Thought
This paper aims to investigate, within the great work of Philip Roth, the forms and thematic recurrences related to Libertine Thought. Although it also consider the poetics of the author in its wholeness, the focus is placed on the most representative works, in which "the subject" libertinism is more meaningful; a role of primary importance in this perspective is the novel "Sabbath’s Theatre". Despite the fact that the investigation is of a thematic-comparative nature, it does not elude a rigorous historical reconstruction of the figure of the libertine, especially to better define his profile and characteristics; moreover, the foundation of a canon of "libertine" authors is fundamental to bring out significative thematic-stylistic recurrences to better approach Roth’s work
Multi-Document Information Consolidation (Dagstuhl Seminar 19182)
This report documents the program and the outcomes of Dagstuhl Seminar 19182 "Multi-Document Information Consolidation". At this 5-day Dagstuhl seminar, an interdisciplinary collection of leading researchers discussed and develop research ideas to address multi-documents in machine learning and NLP systems. In particular, the seminar addressed four major topics: 1) how to represent information in multi-document repositories; 2) how to support inference over multi-document repositories; 3) how to summarize and visualize multi-document repositories for decision support; and 4) how to do information validation on multi-document repositories. General talks as well as topic-specific talks were given to stimulate the discussion between the participants, which lead to various new research ideas
Resistensi Tokoh Utama terhadap Ruang Kota Pascakolonial dalam Novel Divergent Karya Veronica Roth
This paper aims to reveal colonial construction of city space in a dystopian novel, Divergent by Veronica Roth and to analyze the resistance of the main character, Tris Prior, as a form of negotiation toward the postcolonial space. This research will be using postcolonial space theory by Sara Upstone. The result of this discussion shows that the colonial in the novel Divergent constructed colonial space on a city scale in order to maintain their control toward their colonical object by arousing chaos and doing overwriting also establishing the orders and borders in Chicago as a postcolonial city space. Chicago, which was originally a flexible and fluid space, was constructed into an absolute, orderly and rigid place. Violations of rules and boundaries created by the colonial then formed a new structure called post-space as a spatial response to postcolonial space.
Joseph Roth and Slovenes
The present study is based on primary and secondary literature as well as memoirs. It deals with those works by Austrian writer Joseph Roth that thematize Slovenians. First and foremost, these are the novels Radetzky March (1932) and The Emperor\u27s Tomb (1938). Slovenians are here central fictional characters, entered the non-Slovenian world literature of class for the first time, through the Great Gate. In support of the more adequate analysis of fictional characters of Slovenians, author also takes into account Roth\u27s feuilletons, published in the German daily Frankfurter Zeitung. Here he reports on South Slavs, their politics and the state, which he calls one of successor states in the Balkans of the decayed Habsburg Empire. The author focuses on Roth\u27s Slovenian fictional characters and their reception by Slovenian readers. By quoting his articles and few other statements on Slovenians she is about to prove that Roth knew very well both, the political history and the requests of creation of a work of fiction. Fiction is to some extent based on reality, though it works according to aesthetic effects that are not always compatible with it
Roth\u27s Fiction from Nemesis to Nemesis
In her article Roth\u27s Fiction from Nemesis to Nemesis Emily Budick discusses Philip Roth\u27s novel Nemesis as the culminating work of a career in which one nemesis or another has afflicted almost all of the author\u27s protagonists. During the bulk of Roth\u27s career, the hero\u27s nemesis was generally, as in the ordinary, literary usage of the term, the protagonist\u27s enemy, whether Judge Wapter in The Ghost Writer or the alter-Roth in The Counterlife. In Nemesis Roth restores the word nemesis to its classical meaning: Nemesis, as the goddess of revenge and cosmic balance. The nemesis in Roth\u27s novel, therefore, is mortality itself, against which human beings vainly strive. It is also the condition of disease and filth that human beings shares with each other and the natural world, that some humans would, with hubris, attempt to put themselves beyond
Philip Roth revisited
Philip Roth is unquestionably one of the major literary voices of our time, one who has combined critical acclaim with a wide readership. Since the publication of Bernard F. Rodgers's Twayne study of Roth (1978), Roth's oeuvre has expanded considerably both in bulk and in range, with the publication of such major works as The Ghost Writer, The Counterlife, and Patrimony. Philip Roth Revisited is an entirely new look at this important writer's life and work. In this sensitive study Jay L. Halio interprets Roth as fundamentally a comic writer in the tradition of that great "sit-down comedian," Franz Kafka. Humor, Halio argues, is for Roth the vehicle of truth. The present volume is more than a study of a single theme in Roth's work, however for Halio gives full consideration to the many complexities of Roth's writings. Roth has always, for instance, been a writer deeply concerned with characteristically Jewish themes, often controversially so, as in his outrageously comic Portnoy's Complaint. Halio places Roth in his Jewish-American milieu, explaining both the similarities and the differences between Roth and other Jewish-American writers, and discussing the reception of Roth's work by the Jewish community. In the latter part of his career, perhaps influenced by the insistence of readers and critics on seeing the author himself in his protagonists, Roth has turned to the complex theme of the interweaving of art and autobiography a concern that has both intrigued and irritated some critics. Halio's analysis of this important element in Roth's work is perhaps the clearest available reading of a notoriously complex subject. Comic, subtle, intelligent, Philip Roth's literary art reps careful and sensitive reading. Halio's study will be valuable to students and scholars of American literature, and to general readers interested in learning about one of America's leading men of letters
This review deals with narrative perspectives in the novel Nemesis, by the American author Philip Roth. From two points of view: the territorial narrative of 1940’s Newark, the author\u27s hometown and the novel\u27s setting, and the interpretation of the book in the post-pandemic context, a brief critical analysis of the work is outlined
Perbandingan Algoritma Roth-Vande Vate dan Gale-Shapley Dalam Penempatan Karyawan Baru PT. Indowebhost Kreasi
Usually, Placement of new employees done directly. However, placement in such a way is less precise and more subjective than the employment department so that it can cause an imbalance between the needs of employees and the desires of employees. The problem can be solved by using Stable Matching Problem method. The Stable Matching Problem method works by balancing between the company's needs and the desires of the employees so as to balance the desired outcomes by both parties. One of the Stable Matching Problems algorithms is the Gale-Shapley Algorithm and Roth-Vande Vate Algorithm. From the test results it was found that the Roth-Vande Vate algorithm has a higher complexity level T (n) = O (n3) than the Gale-Shapley algorithm which has the level of complexity T (n) = O (n2). From the test results also found that the Roth-Vande Vate algorithm has a better average completion time of 43.4 ms than the Gale-Shapley Algorithm which has an average completion time of 70 ms.
Keywords : Stable Matching Problem, Gale-Shapley Algorithms, RothPenempatan pegawai baru, pada umumnya dilakukan secara langsung.
