A regional approach to the management of copyright in the Caribbean community
PhDCopyright is a property right that confers valuable economic rights. However, the benefits of the copyright system can be realized only if the rights are suitably managed. Traditionally, copyright is managed on a territorial basis. This thesis questions the suitability of copyright management on a territorial basis in the small states of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). It argues that the relatively small pool of right-holders in each state, and the small national repertoires make the territorial management of rights unsuitable and unviable.
The hypothesis of the study is that copyright management in CARICOM will be successful only if it is undertaken on a regional basis with centralized structures that can benefit from economies of scale. The hypothesis is tested with reference to the management of copyright generated by two distinct groups of right-holders in CARICOM a) authors, composers and publishers of music and b) Universities.
The study concludes that the effective management of the rights of authors, composers and publishers of music should be undertaken in CARICOM by one collective management organization which would issue a pan-Caribbean licence covering the works of right-holders in all CARICOM states, and that the copyright generated by Universities in these states should be managed by a single regional mechanism
Physical health care monitoring for people with serious mental illness
Current guidance suggests that we should monitor the physical health of people with serious mental illness, and there has been a significant financial investment over recent years to provide this
Jurisdiction and choice of law in online copyright cases
The online exploitation of copyright-protected content frustrates its effective enforcement. This is because the global reach of the internet stands in stark contrast to the territoriality principle of international copyright law, whereby each State determines whether and the extent to which content is protected within its own territorial borders. When protected content is exploited online, it has the potential to infringe in every State where the content is accessible. This poses a challenge for private international law because its rules are based on localizing connecting factors within a geographical territory. These rules can be difficult to apply in an online copyright case because the infringement can be ubiquitous. This chapter describes how the European Union (EU) rules on jurisdiction and applicable law apply to online copyright infringement cases and analyzes whether the Court of Justice of the European Union’s (CJEU) interpretations of these rules fulfil the underlying objectives of private international law. Lastly, the chapter provides some perspectives for the future.</p
Classification of tree species based on hyperspectral reflectance images of stem bark

Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.Automatization of tree species identification in the field is crucial in improving forest-based bioeconomy, supporting forest management, and facilitating in situ data collection for remote sensing applications. However, tree species recognition has never been addressed with hyperspectral reflectance images of stem bark before. We investigated how stem bark texture differs between tree species using a hyperspectral camera set-up and gray level co-occurrence matrices and assessed the potential of using reflectance spectra and texture features of stem bark to identify tree species. The analyses were based on 200 hyperspectral reflectance data cubes (415–925 nm) representing ten tree species. There were subtle interspecific differences in bark texture. Using average spectral features in linear discriminant analysis classifier resulted in classification accuracy of 92–96.5%. Using spectral and texture features together resulted in accuracy of 93–97.5%. With a convolutional neural network, we obtained an accuracy of 94%. Our study showed that the spectral features of stem bark were robust for classifying tree species, but importantly, bark texture is beneficial when combined with spectral data. Our results suggest that in situ imaging spectroscopy is a promising sensor technology for developing accurate tree species identification applications to support remote sensing.Peer reviewe
Engagement in assertive outreach: compliance or alliance?
Assertive outreach teams intended to engage clients with complex severe and enduring mental illnesses with services, are now common across the United Kingdom. Chapter one explores what is meant by the term 'engagement' and attempts to define the construct as it is used within assertive outreach. This chapter also gives consideration to the validity with which engagements currently measured.
Chapter two, the main empirical paper, examines the psychometric properties of the current observer-rated measures of engagement used by assertive outreach teams. The results indicated that whilst the measures were all found to be reliable, there were a number of differences between the measures in terms of their construct validity.
Little is known about client experiences of services in relation to engagement, with a number of methodological limitations identified with the few qualitative studies that have been conducted. Chapter three reports on the findings of a focus group study with clients under the care of an assertive outreach team. Whilst generally more satisfied with the assertive outreach approach, the participants identified a number of tensions regarding service delivery, which if addressed, may enable teams to further facilitate client engagement.
The model of assertive outreach calls for clinical psychologists to work in increasingly non-traditional ways, with a strong emphasis on forming flexible and open relationships with clients. Items in the current engagement measures concerning the relationship between client and clinician have been shown to be related to outcome. Furthermore, the findings of qualitative studies report that clients find the relationship they have with individual team members pivotal for their engagement with services. Chapter four, therefore, reflects on the required changes to traditional professional boundaries for clinical psychologists working within assertive outreach teams and the impact of these changes on their working relationships with both clients and colleagues
