Publisher Copyright: © 2025 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.The aim of this study was to examine the influence of the time-of-day on muscular strength, power and endurance performance in resistance-trained individuals. Fourteen resistance-trained males (age: 26.3 ± 6.7 years) underwent a randomized, counterbalanced cross-over trial. After a familiarization session, participants underwent two trials performing in the morning (9:00 h) and in the evening (18:00 h) a muscular strength and power assessment for bench press and back squat exercises at 25%, 50%, 75%, 90%, and 100% of one-repetition maximum (1RM). Then, muscular endurance was assessed for both exercises at 65%1RM, performing one set until failure. Once completed, isometric strength and vertical jump capacity (CMJ) tests were also performed. Only back squat exercise at 25% 1RM reported higher performance in the evening compared to the morning at mean velocity and mean and peak power (11–13%, p = 0.018–0.031, g = 1.91–2.20). Also, CMJ power was higher in the evening compared to the morning trial (2.5%, p = 0.002, g = 0.23). No statistical differences were found in the remaining loads, exercises or tests. In conclusion, circadian rhythm affects muscular strength and power performance at low (≤25% 1RM) but not moderate-to-higher loads in resistance-trained male participants, an effect observed in lower-body (e.g. back squat and vertical jump) but not in upper-body exercises (e.g. bench press).Peer reviewe

Boredom and Desire : When Locke Felt Uneasy and Leopardi Yawned

Publisher Copyright: © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group. This article explores John Locke’s innovative reflections on desire and uneasiness, pleasure and pain, and investigates how Locke’s considerations affect Giacomo Leopardi and his theoretical work on the same categories. To justify this filiation, I emphasize Francesco Soave’s important translation of “An Essay Concerning Human Understanding” as a mediating influence for Leopardi’s re-elaboration of these concepts. I firstly focus on the importance that desire and uneasiness acquire in Locke’s treatise and the relevance of these categories for eighteen-century hedonism. I then turn to Leopardi’s discussion of “teoria del piacere” and analyze how it dialogues with and diverges from Locke’s perspective. While Locke generally assigns precedence to uneasiness, Leopardi reclaims the prominence of desire through his specific understanding of noia. Rather than coinciding with an unpleasant discomfort to remove, Leopardi’s noia embodies the vibrating protension of desire toward a constitutionally unreachable infinite pleasure. By ascribing an a-dialectical character to noia, Leopardi subverts the stance shared by Locke, classic hedonism, and Romanticism with regard to desire and uneasiness, along with pleasure and pain. Indeed, Leopardi’s noia corresponds to a desire that is not sublated through the consummation brought about by either the delight of pleasure or the discomfort of pain.Peer reviewe

Shear-Wave Elastography Supports that Muscle Stiffness Should NOT be Considered a Criterion to Determine the Presence of Myofascial Trigger Points in the Infraspinatus Muscle

Publisher Copyright: © Wolters Kluwer Health, Inc. All rights reserved. Objective: This study aimed to determine latent Myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) and asymptomatic surrounding areas differences in pain pressure thresholds (PPTs) and shear-wave elastography (SWE) metrics differences. Design: Latent MTrPs and asymptomatic control points were identified within the infraspinatus muscle. A blinded examiner assessed the PPTs and acquired three SWE images of each location. PPT and SWE scores were compared by location (MTrP and control) and gender. Finally, correlations among demographics, PPTs and SWE data were calculated. Results: Forty participants were analyzed. PPTs were significantly lower in latent MTrPs compared with control points in males (p=0.003) and females (p0.05) nor between males and females (MTrP and control points, p>0.05). In contrast with the accepted MTrP definition, those areas with greater PPTs exhibited greater stiffness via SWE (p<0.01). Conclusion: Although PPT scores indicated significant differences in hyperirritability between latent MTrPs and control points, SWE measurements revealed no significant differences in muscle stiffness. Furthermore, muscle stiffness was significantly associated with greater PPT scores, challenging the hypothesis that stiffer areas can be identified as MTrPs or sources of pain.Peer reviewe

Resistance priming strategies in professional Spanish soccer: A survey study into the practices and perceptions of strength and conditioning coaches

This cross-sectional survey study investigated the practices and perceptions of strength and conditioning (S&C) coaches working in professional Spanish soccer concerning resistance priming strategies. Twenty-four S&C coaches (age: 30.6 ± 5.3 years; professional experience: 7.7 ± 3.5 years) participated in this study. The survey comprised four sections: 1) coaches’ information; 2) perceptions about resistance priming; 3) programming variables; and 4) opinions. Results showed that S&C coaches predominantly used resistance priming strategies 24 h (79%) or 24–48 h (21%) before a match. The most frequently used exercises during resistance priming sessions were isometric exercises (25%), followed by traditional strength exercises heavy load (85% 1RM) (22%), traditional strength moderate load (60–85% 1RM) (17%), ballistic exercises (17%), traditional strength light load (< 60 % 1RM) (11%), sprint (4%), and weightlifting (4%). This paper analyses survey responses from S&C coaches in soccer, comparing their reported practices and perceptions with the findings of existing empirical research. This allows us to examine whether their methods are consistent with research-based approaches, or if they deviate towards alternative methods. This information can help professionals design more effective training programmes.Peer reviewe

Differentiation of self and its implications for forgiveness and repair in romantic relationships

Publisher Copyright: Copyright © 2025. Published by Elsevier Ltd.Differentiation of Self (DoS) is a key variable for understanding how individuals relate within the context of romantic relationships. Previous studies have highlighted its role in emotional regulation and conflict management, yet few have explored its connection to forgiveness and reparative strategies following an offense. The aim of this study was to identify psychological profiles based on DoS levels and to examine their implications for the forgiveness process and perceived reparative strategies after a transgression. The sample consisted of 591 individuals. Cluster analysis revealed three distinct profiles (high, moderate, and low DoS). Results showed that individuals with high and moderate DoS reported lower levels of post-offense distress and higher scores in positive dimensions of forgiveness (affect, cognition, and behavior) compared to those with low DoS. Furthermore, participants with low DoS more frequently perceived the use of negative reparative strategies, such as justification or denial, while those in the high and moderate profiles perceived greater use of apologies. These findings highlight the importance of considering DoS levels in understanding forgiveness and emotional repair, with relevant clinical implications for couple therapy.Peer reviewe
