In the whole of Brazilian writer Ana Miranda#s fictional narrative, the travel thematic # considered one of the most fertile themes of the western literature of all times # occupies a central space, and can even been seen as the most important structuring axis of Miranda#s works. The aim of the present thesis is to analyze the treatment given to the travel subject in the novels Desmundo, O retrato do rei, Dias & Dias and Amrik, emphasizing that, through the traveling narrators, Oribela, Mariana, Feliciana and Amina, the author promotes a connection between different cultures, genders, ethnics and generations, at the same time that establishes a profitable dialogue with the past in her invariant problematization concerning the limits and crossings between the fictional and the extra-literary narrative discourses that surrounds it, mainly the historical and the biographic ones

The increasing resource limitations have changed the perspective of wastewater focus; nowadays, the provision of treatment is equally essential to the recuperation of water, nutrients, energy, and other by-products [Veluhamy et al., 2021]. Wine production is one of the leading beverage industries in Chile; its wastewater generates water pollution and soil degradation if not treated [Ioannou et al., 2015]. Various treatment technologies offer a way to convert the resources from wastewater into marketable products. Some authors prefer the anaerobic methods for wastewater treatment and energy recovery. Anaerobic digestion combines four significant biochemical steps to form biomethane or biohydrogen. Over the last years, the research focus has shifted from methane to hydrogen due to its potential as an inexhaustible, low-cost, and renewable source of clean energy [Ngo et al., 2020]. The objective of this study was to model and simulate a winery wastewater treatment and hydrogen generation train to implement full-scale composite bioactive membrane technology (CBMem). The CBMem consists of hollow fiber membranes with encapsulated acetogenic bacteria; it demonstrated advantages in yield and hydrogen capture efficiency [Prieto et al., 2016]. The influent corresponded to the wastewater generated from all the stages of the winemaking, and the CBMem requirements were a soluble COD higher than 2000 mg/L and the removal of the suspended solids [Prieto et al., 2016]. The researcher performed a literature review of different anaerobic bioreactors. In summary, an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) could treat winery wastewater and fulfill the CBMem restrictions. Besides, the author reviewed the operational and design parameters that influence hydrogen production. The main variables are hydraulic retention time (HRT), solids retention time (SRT), and organic loading rate (OLR). The mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) influence the membrane performance; therefore, it should be range between 10 and 20 g/L. The author built the model using the SIMBA software and simulated for SRT between 2 to 15 days and for OLR in the range of 10 to 30 kgCOD/m3 –d. In summary, pH and hydrogen inhibited the anaerobic oxidation processes entirely, and pH partially inhibited the fermentation; therefore, the anaerobic digestion model described the critical processes for the CBMem implementation. A high SRT allows higher hydrogen productions; therefore, operating at a higher SRT is advisable. The OLR increment promotes the inhibitory mechanism of the methanogenic activity; therefore, it is advisable to operate at a higher OLR. The researcher selected an SRT of 7 days and an OLR of 21 kgCOD/m3-d to operate the AnMBR. The principal advantages of implementing the AnMBR in the wine production industry are 23% of COD removal and hydrogen production of 821 m3/d. The hydrogen produced could be transformed into energy, and the available energy could cover up to 1.4% of the winery demand.Versión original del auto

Although ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi play a key role in forest ecosystems, our knowledge on ECM community assembly processes and their dependency on spatial scales is still scarce. We analysed the assembly processes operating on ECM fungal communities associated with Cistus albidus L. and Quercus spp. in Mediterranean mixed forests (Southern Spain), for which root tip ECM fungi were characterized by high-throughput sequencing. The relative contribution of deterministic and stochastic processes that govern the ECM fungal community assembly was inferred by using phylogenetic and compositional turnover descriptors across spatial scales. Our results revealed that stochastic processes had a significantly higher contribution than selection on root tip ECM fungal community assembly. The strength of selection decreased at the smallest scale and it was linked to the plant host identity and the environment. Dispersal limitation increased at finer scales, whilst drift showed the opposite pattern likely suggesting a main influence of priority effects on ECM fungal community assembly. This study highlights the potential of phylogeny to infer ECM fungal community responses and brings new insights into the ecological processes affecting the structure and dynamics of Mediterranean forests.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature. Introduction to Mexican Music for Solo Cello (1962-2014) from a Performer's Perspective

    No full text
This paper examines fifty-two Mexican solo cello works (and also three works written for two cellos, one written for cello and actor, and one written for cello and tape), all of which were acquired over a four-year course of research. All of these works were composed in the modern or avant-garde style between 1962 and 2014 and represent a lesser-known area of Mexican music. During the period from 2013 through 2014, eleven works were given to the author by Carlos Prieto, thirty-five works were obtained directly from composers, and five works came from library consultations during research trips to Mexico: at the National Library in Mexico City, at the National Center for Investigation and Documentation of Music in Mexico (CENEDIM), and at the National Center for the Arts in Mexico (CENART). Introduction to Mexican Music for Solo Cello (1962-2012) from a Performer’s Perspective documents an interdisciplinary approach to research: interactions and interviews with living Mexican composers, analysis and thoughts on interpretation of works by those composers, compilation of a list of works for solo cello written between 1962 and 2014 based on Adventure of a Cello by Carlos Prieto, Influence of Carlos Prieto on Contemporary Cello Repertoire by A.S. Saucedo Estrada, and the author’s research. The paper focuses on the vital contribution of cellist Carlos Prieto to the growth and proliferation of contemporary Mexican cello music. The paper includes documented interviews by the author with prominent composers and artists in Mexico including Carlos Prieto, Manuel de Elias, Ana Lara, Max Lifchitz, Samuel Máynez, Lucia Álvarez, Radko Tichavský, and Iracema de Andrade. This research is the first of its kind to document Mexican works for solo cello and to provide background analysis of these works from a performer’s perspective. All of the pieces covered in this project have yet to make a significant impact on the wider world or on professional cellists outside of Mexico.D.M.A

Is demand for polluting goods manageable? an econometric study of car ownership and use in Mexico

    No full text
Charging for social marginal costs is efficient regardless of price elasticities, but the importance of getting prices"right"is greater the more manageable, or elastic, the demand. In efficient pollution control programs, options to make cars cleaner are combined optimally with demand conservation. The roles played by"cleaner cars"as compared with"fewer trips"are determined by empirical parameters: cheap, clean technologies would imply a great role for cleaner cars, while high demand elasticities lead to a greater role for demand reduction. In seminal research, evisence was found to support the hypothesis that demand for commodities such as gasoline should have lower price elasticities and higher income elasticities in developing than in industrial countries. The authors estimate a model of gasoline demand and car ownership in Mexico, using a panel of annual observations by state. Key features they introduce are instrumental variables on different data and the treatment of (1) possible dynamics, (2) measurement errors in the data, and (3) unobserved characteristics in individual states. They use tests of serial correlation in the residuals to model the dynamics properly. The resulting model is one of almost immediate adjustment, with a short-term price elasticity for gasoline close to the long-term estimate of -0.8. The model displays elasticities that are lower (for income) and higher (for price) than those hypothesized, and are within the range of elasticities found in industrial countries. Byproducts of the model: The elasticity of car purchases with respect to gasoline prices is positive. Scrappage decisions are affected by income and by car and gasoline prices. And these elasticities are not significantly different in the richer states. For policy purposes, these findings do not support"elasticity pessimism"The use of car services is sensitive to pricing, which suggests that consumers, for some of their demand, have reasonably good alternatives to car services. Consideration of external costs - such as accidents, congestion, air pollution, and road damage - thus involve considerable demand conservation.Inequality,Transport and Environment,Energy and Environment,Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies

    No full text
Ana Rossetti is the author of two epigrams emerged from the ekphrastic reading and from the intermedial transposition of two advertisements: "Chico Wrangler" and the visual poem "Calvin Klein Underwear." Beyond gender writing and beyond postmodern metarepresentation, which don’t clarify the complete meaning of the two poems, we want to go into detail about the fact that resources such as irony, juxtaposition and the baroque language are not just a formal suit, but they define a parody of the commercialization of the scopophilia promoted in advertising. To this end, after a quick look on the poetic career of Rossetti, we will see how she expresses her heterodoxy by the ironic demystification of postmodern social order, which imposes the illusory inveiglement of pleasure and desire.
