No full textO objetivo deste artigo é promover um diálogo entre Gramsci e Raewyn Connell. Ele apresenta estratégias práticas para viabilizar a emancipação do proletariado e fragilizar o poder hegemônico burguês. Connell propõe a ruptura com o cispatriarcado e respectiva masculinidade hegemônica em busca de um modelo harmônico no universo dos gêneros. A partir do raciocínio dedutivo, do materialismo histórico-dialético, de pesquisas bibliográficas e da abordagem qualitativa, o ensaio conclui que o diálogo entre Gramsci e Connell se potencializa na defesa da organização e da mobilização coletiva, bem assim da educação

No full textA conversar com Raewyn Connell tever início pela sua trajetória acadêmica a partir do livro Making the Difference: Schools, Families and Social Division (1982), cuja publicação em língua portuguesa ampliou o interesse de pesquisadores em educação pelos estudos de gênero. Dada a amplitude da produção da autora nesta linha de estudos a conversa continua com indagações sobre a importância para escola em lidar com esse tema, assim como sua interconexão com os estudos sobre masculinidades e suas teorizações internacionais e mais particularmente no Hemisfério Sul, visto que Connell, à época estava divulgando o seu livro Southern Theory: The Global Dynamics of Knowledge in Social Science. Discutiu-se as possibilidades teóricas do Sul pelo Sul, o papel da escola na introdução dos temas sobre as ordenações de gênero e finalmente apresenta-se reflexões dos autores sobre seus próprios questionamentos a cerca da obra da autora

We present her discussion of classic sociological authors and her criticism of social theory from the global South. Connell does not exclude the importance of canons, but highlights the value of southern theory for the social sciences and some of their characteristics, such as specificity, contextualization, the debate on social inequalities and the commitment to democracy.Refletimos sobre debates que Raewyn Connell tem feito acerca das teorias do sul. Apresentamos sua discussão sobre autores clássicos da sociologia e sua crítica à teoria social desde o Sul global. Offshore cosmopolitanism: reading the nation in Rana Dasgupta’s Tokyo Cancelled, Lawrence Chua’s Gold by the Inch and Aravind Adiga’s The White Tiger
No full textFollowing Ronen Palan’s The Offshore World (2003) Connell understands the central feature of the offshore as the‘bifurcation of the nation state’: the state splits itself in two by continuing to govern those areas that remain easy to legislate while surrendering to the international realm those which do not. Connell considers how the offshore can be understood as a form of cosmopolitanism, with a particular emphasis on the way that the obligations of the state are stretched to accommodate foreign businesses, foreign capital and even foreign citizens. Yet, as Connell demonstrates, the cosmopolitan promise of the offshore conceals the double nature of the nation-state which functions both as a node for discursive community formation and, simultaneously, as cover for the evasion of any communal responsibilities that this might imply. Reading Lawrence Chua’s Gold by the Inch (1998), Rana Dasgupta’s Tokyo Cancelled (2006) and Aravind Adiga’s The White Tiger (2008) Connell examines how the idea of national belonging struggles to survive in representations of the offshore. In particular Connell’s analysis shows that the difficulty that arises from trying to represent the offshore leads these texts to open up new perspectives on global capitalism by focussing upon its differential relationships to the state

No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

No full textRaewyn Connell, socióloga, professora emérita da Universidade de Sydney, proeminente intelectual e ativista no campo de estudos de gênero e masculinidade, esteve pela primeira vez em Salvador em abril de 2015. Connell proferiu uma conferência intitulada “Gênero em Perspectiva Global: pensando a partir do Sul” e participou de encontros com estudantes de pós-graduação e ativistas de movimentos feministas e transfeministas. Aproveitamos a ocasião para entrevistá-la e, em aproximadamente duas horas, Connell falou extensivamente sobre sua trajetória acadêmica bem como os conceitos e temáticas que orientam suas pesquisas sobre gênero e masculinidades. A entrevista também enfocou temas relacionados à sua teoria de gênero a partir do Sul global, transexualidade, perspectivas decoloniais e o futuro da pesquisa feminista

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
