This work presents the study of analysis of some pieces of art from Friar Confaloni, consisting an imaging speech of the Visual Culture History in Goiania. It was chosen as a spatial and temporal profile the periods between 1950 a 1952, first phase of the arrival of the Friar in the city of Goias to paint the alfrescos of the Nossa Senhora do Rosário Church. And the second moment, in the year of 1952, in his arrival in Goiania, 1977, year of his decease.Through a detailed research It contextualized the historic moment of the culture of the people from Goiania, emphasizing the participation of Friar Confaloni establishing the school so called Escola Goiana de Belas Artes in 1953 and in the event of the first Conference of Intellectuals in 1954.Having as a methodological theoretical support the modern artistic comprehension of the proposal of George Didi-Huberman, It was sought through the analysis of Friar Confaloni s pieces of work, the approach about the History of the Visual Culture in Goiania, with the modern aesthetic presented by Friar Confaloni who brought in the germinal moments of the cultural modernism in Goiania, in order to break of the cultural isolation of Goias in the national scenario, which resulted in the configuration of an aesthetic popular language, regional, opposing the modernizing political action truly visible in the image of the new capital. The theme required the records about the author s life and works highlighting Confaloni s vocation for the ministry and painting, probing the artistic relation between Confaloni and the space in which he was engaged the city of Goiania. It was considered important for the research to contextualize the period which points the birth of the modern art in Goias, highlighting Confaloni in the capitation of the elements surrounded a new urban environment culture which configured in Goiania starting in the fifties

    Promising Therapies for Alzheimer's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most frequent progressive neurodegenerative disease. Cholinergic dysfunction is one of the major pathological alteration, although depletion of cholinergic neurons is caused by the well-established toxicity of the beta-amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Cholinergic dysfunctions are consequences of the decrease in acetylcholine synthesis and release, and altered function of muscarinic and nicotinic cholinergic receptors. In addition, a direct correlation between cholinergic alteration, amyloidbeta production and tau phosphorylation, two main AD-pathology hallmarks, has been identified. METHODS: In the present review we focused our discussion on the identification of new allosteric or bitopic ligands able to modulate the cholinergic receptor activity. Moreover drug delivery methodology (nanoparticeles, liposomes, etc.) that might contribute to drive the drug in the brain, reducing their toxicity and potential side effects have been also discussed. RESULTS: Many drugs are currently in use for AD (e.g. donepezil, rivastigmine etc.) and several of those in development such as muscarininc and nicotinic agonists, target specifically the cholinergic system; the main mechanism aims to rescue the cholinergic dysfunction, to reduce neurotoxic protein accumulation and improve the cholinergic impairments responsible of the cognitive deficits. Promising approaches aim to either improve drug delivery into the brain or develope new compounds targeting known or new molecular pathways. Nanoparticles and liposomes are also described as new nanotechnology tools that overcome traditional routes of administration, with a particular focus on their employment for compounddelivery that targets the cholinergic system. Ultimately, a new fields of research is emerging as the use of induced pluripotent stem cells, a technology that allows to obtain cells directly from the patients that can be propagated indefinetely and differentiated into the susceptible neuronal subtypes. This may significantly contribute to improve the understanding of AD pathological processes and enhance current AD pharmacology beyond the cholinergic dysfunction. CONCLUSION: From the topics discussed in the present review, emerges that the combination between pharmacological studies and nanotechnological approaches for drug delivery and the identification of new specific models may largely enhance and improve the therapeutic strategies for different neurological disease including AD

Gender Effects on Plasma PGRN Levels in Patients with Alzheimer's Disease: A Preliminary Study

    No full text
Plasma progranulin (PGRN) levels constitute a potentially invaluable biomarker for neurodegenerative diseases including frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and, perhaps, Alzheimer's disease (AD). We assessed plasma PGRN levels in 107 AD patients, 36 FTLD patients, and 107 controls. We found that, in female AD patients, there is a positive correlation between PGRN levels and age. Although no significant differences were found between patients and controls, we observed higher levels in females compared to males; in AD patients, a positive correlation between PGRN levels and age was observed in females. In conclusion, our data suggest that PGRN may not be a good biomarker for AD; moreover, gender may influence the plasma PGRN levels of AD patients

CONFALONI, O PROFETA QUE ANUNCIOU E DENUNCIOU PELOS PINCÉIS

This article has as object the person of Friar Confaloni, an Italian-Goiano who proclaimed the Good News as a missionary and had the courage to denounce, through brushes, political and social inequalities. His goal was the defense of justice. At a methodological level, in addition to the theoretical bibliography, a sociological reading was sought through the conflictual model, in order to understand its option for the discarded in the Brazilian interior. As an Italian "novecentista" painter, he gradually transformed himself into someone who identified with the marginalized. Priest and reference painter, he was able to update biblical texts contemplating the indigenous, black and peasant face. In the "aggiornamento" of the Bible with reality, he denounced the Brazilian tortures. The biblical Jesus has the face of the suffering Brazilians of the base. In the denunciations, he expressed the hope that comes from God. The hypothesis defines him, not as a theologian of liberation, but as a missionary who, based on his brushes, can be called a painter/prophet of liberation.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Gene expression profiles of APP and BACE1 in Tg SOD1G93A cortical cells

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease defined by motor neuron loss. Transgenic mouse model (Tg SOD1G93A) shows pathological features that closely mimic those seen in ALS patients. An hypothetic link between AD and ALS was suggested by finding an higher amount of amyloid precursor protein (APP) in the spinal cord anterior horn neurons, and of A beta peptides in ALS patients skin. In this work, we have investigated the expression of some genes involved in Alzheimer's disease, as APP, beta- and gamma-secretase, in an animal model of ALS, to understand some possible common molecular mechanisms between these two pathologies. For gene expression analysis, we carried out a quantitative RT-PCR in ALS mice and in transgenic mice over-expressing human wild-type SOD1 (Tg hSOD1). We found that APP and BACE1 mRNA levels were increased 1.5-fold in cortical cells of Tg SOD1G93A mice respect to Tg hSOD1, whereas the expression of gamma-secretase genes, as PSEN1, PSEN2, Nicastrin, and APH1a, showed no statistical differences between wild-type and ALS mice. Biochemical analysis carried out by immunostaining and western blotting, did not show any significant modulation of the protein expression compared to the genes, suggesting the existence of post-translational mechanisms that modify protein levels

This dissertation, developed at the Research Line: Culture and Educational Processes Program of Graduate Studies in Education of the Federal University of Goias, addresses the issue of intrinsic relations between education, visual arts and literature. To develop it we chose a qualitative approach, similar to bibliographic research using methodological assumptions of the historical survey of art and culture of Goias in an aesthetic standpoint and also local. We analyzed Eli Brasiliense novels and works of Frei Nazareno Confaloni, looking for ideas about man and nature, the world of school, modern art, the popular religion, work and courage of the frontiersman and his connection to the land. For this analysis, we used the references of Barbosa, Candido, Palacin, Olives, Borges, Cavalcanti and Sabino Junior. In conclusion, it was realized that the culture, like possibility of education, goes beyond the art education of formal teaching, and yet the languages of literature and the visual arts are interrelated and are essential in human development

    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
