OSSOS observes planet-formation structure in the main Kuiper Belt

No full text
International audienceThe Outer Solar System Origins Survey (OSSOS) has now completed its detailed search for moving objects in the transneptunian region. For the main Kuiper Belt, the survey tracked 100% of the detected objects to high-precision orbits (typical fractional semimajor axis uncertainties of 0.01 - 0.10 percent). This accuracy allows us to observe previously undiscussed structure in the classical Kuiper Belt's orbital distribution. During the early-release OSSOS data analysis, we found that the a/q/i structure (semimajor axis/perihelion/inclination) of the Kuiper Belt could still be matched adequately with that previously found by the Canada-France Ecliptic Plane Survey (CFEPS) : a hot inclination component and then a cold component split into a 'stirred' component and a concentrated 'kernel' near 44 au. With the abundant full set of OSSOS detection (extending down past 25th magnitude in r band), the data now no longer permit this simple two-component structure for the cold component. In fact, there are small-scale features of great interest in the belt, and there are new trends visible which require a more complex model. We will present these features and discuss how current models of planetary migration may explain some of them

International audienceThe Outer Solar System Origin Survey (OSSOS) completed main data acquisition in February 2017. Here we report the release of our full orbit sample, which include 836 TNOs with high precision orbit determination and classification. We combine the OSSOS orbit sample with previously release Canada-France Ecliptic Plane Survey (CFEPS) and a precursor survey to OSSOS by Alexandersen et al. to provide a sample of over 1100 TNO orbits with high precision classified orbits and precisely determined discovery and tracking circumstances (characterization). We are releasing the full sample and characterization to the world community, along with software for conducting ‘Survey Simulations’, so that this sample of orbits can be used to test models of the formation of our outer solar system against the observed sample. Here I will present the characteristics of the data set and present a parametric model for the structure of the classical Kuiper belt

The lyrical novel, as defined by Jean-Yves Tadié (1978), is a hybrid genre, a prose narrative whose action and effect procedures refer to the poem: it contains elements of the narrative – author, narrator, protagonist, plot, space and time – and of the poem: structure, myth, style and, to a lesser extent, rhythm, sound and repetition. Starting from this definition, the work will analyze Nossos Ossos, looking at how the narrator-protagonist of the novel and his trip to Pernambuco confer traits of lyrical novel to the book. New features in the structure of the classical Kuiper Belt

No full text
International audienceWe report fascinating new dynamical structures emerging from a higher precision view of the classical Kuiper belt (the plentiful non-resonant orbits with semimajor axes in roughly the a=35-60 au range). The classical Kuiper Belt divides into multiple sub-populations: an 'inner' classical belt (a small group of non-resonant objects with a<39.4 au where the 3:2 resonance is located), an abundant 'main' classical belt (between the 3:2 and the 2:1 at a=47.4 au), and a difficult to study outer classical belt beyond the 2:1. We examine the dynamical structure, as precisely revealed in the detections from OSSOS (the Outer Solar System Origin's Survey); the data set is of superb quality in terms of orbital element and numbers of detections (Kavelaars et al, this meeting). The previous CFEPS survey showed that the main classical belt requires a complex dynamical substructure that goes beyond a simple 'hot versus cold' division based primarily on orbital inclination; the 'cold' inclination component requires two sub-components in the semimajor axis and perihelion distance q space (Petit et al 2011). CFEPS modelled this as a 'stirred' component present at all a=40-47 AU semimajor axes, with a dense superposed 'kernel' near a=44 AU at low eccentricity; the first OSSOS data release remained consistent with this (Bannister et al 2016). As with the main asteroid belt, as statistics and orbital quality improve we see additional significant substructure emerging in the classical belt's orbital distribution.OSSOS continues to add evidence that the cold stirred component extends smoothly beyond the 2:1 (Bannister et al 2016). Unexpectedly, the data also reveal the clear existence of a paucity of orbits just beyond the outer edge of the kernel; there are significantly fewer TNOs in the narrow semimajor axis band from a=44.5-45.0 AU. This may be related to the kernel population's creation, or it may be an independent feature created by planet migration as resonances moved in the primordial Kuiper Belt

Literature for children and adolescents is said to be those stories of a fictional nature, mostly, and which mostly talk about the conquest of heroes. The heroine's journey describes her experience with external and internal conflicts, in this sense she has the purpose of selfknowledge. Thus, our work aimed to analyze the heroine's journey, described by the author Maureen Murdock, in the bestseller novel City of bones (2007), by Cassandra Clare. This research, through literary review, sought to encompass the journey of the heroine and other aspects of children's literature in the analysis of the aforementioned narrative as a way of highlighting the female protagonism of the character Clary Fray who escapes the rule of the stereotypes of the eternal female.

OSSOS. XXVI. On the Lack of Catastrophic Collisions in the Present Kuiper Belt

No full text
We investigate different conditions, including the orbital and size-frequency distribution (SFD) of the early Kuiper Belt, that can trigger catastrophic planetesimal destruction. The goal of this study is to test if there is evidence for collisional grinding in the Kuiper Belt that has occurred since its formation. This analysis has important implications for whether the present-day SFD of the cold classical trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) is a result of collisional equilibrium or if it reflects the primordial stage of planetesimal accretion. As an input to our modeling, we use the most up-to-date debiased OSSOS++ ensemble sample of the TNO population and orbital model based on the present-day architecture of the Kuiper Belt. We calculate the specific impact energies between impactor-target pairs from different TNO groups and compare our computed energies to catastrophic disruption results from smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations. We explore different scenarios by considering different total primordial Kuiper Belt masses and power slopes of the SFD and allowing collisions to take place over different timescales. The collisional evolution of the Kuiper Belt is a strong function of the unknown initial mass in the trans-Neptunian region, where collisional grinding of planetesimals requires a total primordial Kuiper Belt mass of M > 5 M ⊕, collision speeds as high as 3 km s−1, and collisions over at least 0.5 Gyr. We conclude that presently, most of the collisions in the trans-Neptunian region are in the cratering rather than disruption regime. Given the low collision rates among the cold classical Kuiper Belt objects, their SFD most likely represents the primordial planetesimal accretion. © 2022. The Author(s). O Corpo Mágico Num Mundo (Quase) Real: Ações Imunológicas Na Fantasia Distópica Temporada Dos Ossos

No full text
In the present work, we assume that fantastic literature seems to be free of realistic conventions of representation of time, space, character, inanimate objects, me and the other. Furthermore, one of its thematic guidelines is the pursuit of what has been silenced, made invisible in the culture of official life (JACKSON, 2009). For this reason, it is intended, in this work, to investigate the representation of the magic body in the enunciated of dystopian fantasy, a hybrid genre that brings the existence of the supernatural in the midst of an authoritarian government in a world similar to ours, as a metaphor for discursive representations of marginalized bodies and oppressed people present in official life. In light of this, in order to achieve our objective, we first copulate/collate texts about the representation of marginalized bodies (LOURO, 2004), about the discursive representation of the body in aesthetic enunciateds (BAKHTIN, 2011) and also about the specific discursive representations of the fantasy genre (JACKSON, 2009) and, secondly, we present an analysis that puts the representation of these bodies in dialogue on the book Bone Season, by the english author Samantha Shannon

Literary Onomastics and Spatial Representation as Anchors of Memory: Toponyms in Pedro Nava's Baú de Ossos (Chest of bones)

Two disciplines stand out: Toponomastics, focusing on the intricate analysis of place names from linguistic formation to extralinguistic associations, has proven to be the most fruitful branch within Brazilian academia. Anthroponomastics, the other notable facet of Onomastics, delves into personal names and their myriad linguistic and extralinguistic relationships. Globally, the interconnectedness facilitated by globalized communication has spurred the emergence of new perspectives, including Literary Onomastics. While much of the research in Literary Onomastics centers on character names in literary works, there are also instances of exploration into place names. However, such studies are scarce in Brazil, and this thesis seeks to broaden this landscape. Within literary works, names represent reality, playing pivotal roles in the narrative construction. Our specific aim is to apply the critical and theoretical nuances of Literary Onomastics to select toponyms from Pedro Nava\'s Baú de ossos (\'Chest of Bones\'). The author utilizes toponyms in this text to evoke memories and fill the surrounding space. Rua Direita in Juiz de Fora ( \'Straight Street\', state of Minas Gerais) and Rua Aristides Lobo in Rio de Janeiro (\'Aristides Lobo Street\', state of Rio de Janeiro) are the two public places that hold particular significance in the author\'s childhood, each one serving as a tether for memory, gradually weaving together a patchwork quilt of recollections. The findings of this thesis underscore the toponym\'s role as a mnemonic anchor, whether within fictional or non-fictional context
