The main intention of this work is to provide a broad description of the Jesuit father Claudio Clemente´s work: Beheaded Machiavellianism by the Christian Wisdom of Spain and Asturias. In that regard, and to achieve a better understanding of the text, we will provide a brief introduction to the discussion in which the work is framed. From there, we will address the theological implications about the State deployed in The Prince, and how Father Claudio Clemente responds to it.La principal intención de este trabajo es poder describir a grandes rasgos la obra del padre jesuita Claudio Clemente: Maquiavelismo Degollado por la cristiana sabiduría de España y Asturias. Chronic but not acute N-acetylcysteine promotes extinction of nicotine-cue conditioned responding

A growing body of evidence indicates that restoring basal concentrations of extracellular glutamate and thereby increasing tonic activation of the mGluR2/3 receptors could be an important target for treatment of nicotine dependence. In fact, administration of N-acetylcysteine (N-AC), a cysteine prodrug, by restoring extracellular glutamate concentrations prevents relapse to cocaine- and heroin-seeking behavior in rats following drug self-administration. Thus, using a reliable procedure of extinction-reinstatement following nicotine self-administration inducing robust and lasting drug-seeking behavior (Di Clemente et al., 2012; Cervo et al., 2013) we characterized the efficacy of N-AC in modulating nicotine-seeking behavior in Wistar male rat. Acute pre-treatment with N-AC 100 mg/kg i.p., but not 30 and 60 mg/kg, induced a short-term attenuation of conditioned nicotine- but not saccharin-seeking behavior without influencing rats’ locomotor activity. This effect was completely prevented by 1 mg/kg LY341495, a selective group II metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR2/3) antagonist. Chronic treatment with N-AC 100 mg/kg i.p., but not 60 mg/kg, during 14th days exposure to nicotine-associated cues reduced drug-seeking without any tolerance. Moreover, chronic N-AC induced a long-term anti-relapse activity that was still present 14 days after the end of the treatment. In conclusion, N-AC might offer a therapeutic opportunity for acute cue-controlled nicotine-seeking and that chronic treatment with N-AC may promote extinction of nicotine-cue conditioned responding

Measuring and optimizing portfolio credit risk: A copula-based approach

    No full text
In this work, we present a methodology for measuring and optimizing the credit risk of a loan portfolio taking into account the non-normality of the credit loss distribution. In particular, we aim at modelling accurately joint default events for credit assets. In order to achieve this goal, we build the loss distribution of the loan portfolio by Monte Carlo simulation. The times until default of each obligor in portfolio are simulated following a copula-based approach. In particular, we study four different types of dependence structure for the credit assets in portfolio: the Gaussian copula, the Student's t-copula, the grouped t-copula and the Clayton n-copula (or Cook-Johnson copula). Our aim is to assess the impact of each type of copula on the value of different portfolio risk measures, such as expected loss, maximum loss, credit value at risk and expected shortfall. In addition, we want to verify whether and how the optimal portfolio composition may change utilizing various types of copula for describing the default dependence structure. In order to optimize portfolio credit risk, we minimize the conditional value at risk, a risk measure both relevant and tractable, by solving a simple linear programming problem subject to the traditional constraints of balance, portfolio expected return and trading. The outcomes, in terms of optimal portfolio compositions, obtained assuming different default dependence structures are compared with each other. The solution of the risk minimization problem may suggest us how to restructure the inefficient loan portfolios in order to obtain their best risk/return profile. In the absence of a developed secondary market for loans, we may follow the investment strategies indicated by the solution vector by utilizing credit default swaps.

Measuring accessibility in urban contexts: from micro to macro

We live in a time where data is the principal resource we turn to when solving problems on an urban scale. From transportation, to disaster management, to sustainability, different aspects of urban life are heavily shaped by the information we extract from data. Despite this, scarcity of data and inadequate analysis methodologies often prevent the development of meaningful answers or even lead to harmful interventions. This thesis aims to apply novel methods for geo-spatial data analysis to some of the most pressing problems in contemporary urban planning. I will combine a dataset of geographical data describing the structural properties of the urban context with a dataset of high-frequency location-based data describing the movement of a set of citizens in a given period of time. Taking as a reference the framework of the 15−minutes city, stating that in an optimally designed city every service could be accessible in less than 15 minutes by bike, I will reveal a common pattern in European metropolitan areas. While the core municipalities would already have the structural capability for allowing a 15−minutes model of mobility, smaller cities in the fringes of the metropolitan area often lack even the basic infrastructure to make it possible. In addition to this, I will show how these structural inequalities provoke a negative feedback loop with the behavioral components of the urban dynamics. Areas with less access to services of good quality will attract people with lower socio-economic status. In parallel, areas inhabited by people with lower socio-economic status will be less likely to improve their access to services. This feedback loop is the leading factor behind the disproportionate inequality between central and peripheric areas we observed in the first part of the analysis. Lastly, I will aggregate the within-city metrics to obtain a city-wide inequality measure, that can be used to compare the general mobility efficiency between cities. The results of this analysis are published on an open-access interactive online platform
