Evaluating the applicability of the radial approximation for pile heat exchangers
This paper appraises the efficacy of using an analytical radial approximation for different thermal pile heat exchanger geometries. Unsteady radial heat-flow from fluid in a pipe set within a grouted borehole into the external ground is well-documented and can be solved analytically very rapidly using Laplace Transforms (Javed and Claesson 2011). By comparing the radial model with finite-element simulations including explicit pile geometries, this paper provides a provisional analysis of the accuracy of this approach. Initial findings suggest that the radial model may provide an appropriate approximation to pile behaviour for certain pipe configurations, albeit with small ‘mid-time’ error

Better balance with somatosensory exercises : a Parkinson perspective
BACKGROUND: People with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) experience increasing activity limitations in walking, carrying objects, turning around, and dressing. Subtle and often unconscious balance decline may have occurred already at an early stage, even when first diagnosed. At present, no medical treatment can ease the progressive balance impairment. Instead, physical training has become a means to remain physically active and mobile for as long as possible.AIM: The overall aim of this thesis was to evaluate if our hypotheses, the training approach of ‘Somatosensory Focused Balance Training without Cues’, can be effective in supporting people with PD at an early stage (early PD) to maintain their balance ability, so that they can remain physically active, move and walk independently, for as long as possible.METHODS: At first, the BDL Balance Scale, a clinical balance assessment, was validated for use in people with early PD. Thereafter, to investigate the effect of ‘Somatosensory Focused Balance Training without Cues’, people with early PD (n=28) were randomised into two training groups and tested by a blinded assessor before and after the intervention. The training was evaluated with clinical outcomes, laboratory movement outcomes and the result was compared to healthy age-matched controls (n=18). Furthermore, to acquire knowledge of how people with early PD perceived the intervention, an interview study using content analysis was performed.RESULTS: The BDL Balance Scale was found to be valid for use in early PD. It correlated to similar scales and could detect a difference between early PD and healthy controls. The training approach improved balance in the studies population, measured with clinical and movement laboratory outcomes, as well as by participant perceptions. The interviews provided important information on how the group contributed to greater motivation for training and offered a platform for making new friends.CONCLUSION: The ‘Somatosensory Focused Balance Training without Cues’ improves balance in early PD. Notably, the training context is particularly important considering that it can increase the motivation and compliance to the training. Evidence for the decay B0→J/ψω and measurement of the relative branching fractions of meson decays to J/ψη and J/ψη′
First evidence of the B 0 → J / ψ ω decay is found and the B s 0 → J / ψ η and B s 0 → J / ψ η ′ decays are studied using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb -1 collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. The branching fractions of these decays are measured relative to that of the B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0 decay:frac(B (B 0 → J / ψ ω), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 0.89 ± 0.19 (stat) - 0.13 + 0.07 (syst),frac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 14.0 ± 1.2 (stat) - 1.5 + 1.1 (syst) - 1.0 + 1.1 (frac(f d, f s)),frac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η ′), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 12.7 ± 1.1 (stat) - 1.3 + 0.5 (syst) - 0.9 + 1.0 (frac(f d, f s)), where the last uncertainty is due to the knowledge of f d / f s, the ratio of b-quark hadronization factors that accounts for the different production rate of B 0 and B s 0 mesons. The ratio of the branching fractions of B s 0 → J / ψ η ′ and B s 0 → J / ψ η decays is measured to befrac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η ′), B (B s 0 → J / ψ η)) = 0.90 ± 0.09 (stat) - 0.02 + 0.06 (syst)
The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law
Abstract
The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Possible solutions for reform are suggested. In a forthcoming article, the author comprehensively examines those reform proposals
matchings, posets (extended abstract)
We show that there are matchings on points without, so called, left (neighbor) nestings. We also define a set of naturally labelled -free posets, and show that there are such posets on elements. Our work was inspired by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes and Kitaev [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A. 117 (2010) 884―909]. They gave bijections between four classes of combinatorial objects: matchings with no neighbor nestings (due to Stoimenow), unlabelled -free posets, permutations avoiding a specific pattern, and so called ascent sequences. We believe that certain statistics on our matchings and posets could generalize the work of Bousquet-Mélou et al. and we make a conjecture to that effect. We also identify natural subsets of matchings and posets that are equinumerous to the class of unlabeled -free posets. We give bijections that show the equivalence of (neighbor) restrictions on nesting arcs with (neighbor) restrictions on crossing arcs. These bijections are thought to be of independent interest. One of the bijections maps via certain upper-triangular integer matrices that have recently been studied by Dukes and Parviainen [Electron. J. Combin. 17 (2010) #R53].Nous montrons qu'il y a couplages sur points sans emboîtement (de voisins) à gauche. Nous définissons aussi un ensemble d'EPO (ensembles partiellement ordonnés) sans motif naturellement étiquetés, et montrons qu'il y a tels EPO sur éléments. Notre travail a été inspiré par Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes et Kitaev [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A. 117 (2010) 884―909]. Ces auteurs donnent des bijections entre quatre classes d'objets combinatoires: couplages sans emboîtement de voisins (dû à Stoimenow), EPO sans motif non étiquetés, permutations évitant un certain motif, et des objets appelés suites à montées. Nous pensons que certaines statistiques sur nos couplages et nos EPO pourraient généraliser le travail de Bousquet-Mélou et al. et nous proposons une conjecture à ce sujet. Nous identifions aussi des sous-ensembles naturels de couplages et d'EPO qui sont énumérés par la même séquence que la classe des EPO sans motif non étiquetés. Nous donnons des bijections qui démontrent l'équivalence entre les restrictions sur les emboîtements (d'arcs voisins) et les restrictions sur les croisements (d'arcs voisins). Nous pensons que ces bijections présentent un intérêt propre. L'une de ces bijections passe par certaines matrices triangulaires supérieures à coefficients entiers qui ont été récemment étudiées par Dukes et Parviainen [Electron. J. Combin. 17 (2010) #R53]
