Alice Ekka and the question of authenticity in Hindi Adivasi literature

    No full text
This paper investigates the question of authenticity developed in the contemporary Adivasi literary discourse in light of some short stories of Alice Ekka, an until recently unknown Adivasi author active in the 1960s. The discovery of this author moves further back in time the beginning of Hindi Adivasi literature, previously believed to have emerged between the 1980s and 1990s following the rise of Dalit literature. As a forerunner, Alice Ekka manifests in her narrative some elements that are peculiar when analyzed in relation to the assumptions made in contemporary literary discourse on Adivasi writing. From her short stories, it becomes clear that besides her Adivasi background, she was also informed by the viewpoint of the educated, middle-class city dweller and drew inspiration without constraint from mainstream literary traditions such as the Hindi Chayavad and English Romanticism. The paper discusses how the presence of such elements contrasts with the assumption of Adivasi “authentic” literature based on Adivasi consciousness and tradition

This thesis was started with the aim of compiling a thematic catalogue of Armin Kaufmann’s work, of collecting a biographical survey of his life and of illustrating his creative work as it appeared to his contemporaries. The music material found in the inheritance of Armin Kaufmann is partly available in the “Musiksammlung der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek” (collection of music belonging to the Austrian National Library) and served as the basis of the thematic catalogue. Another part is available in the “Armin Kaufmann Dokumentationszentrum” (Armin Kaufmann documentation centre) in Stift Ossiach (monastery of Ossiach, Carinthia), which was inaugurated in summer 2009; these sources have also been considered. All “incipits” were not just reproduced mechanically but have been produced personally by the author of this thesis. Thus it was possible to locate obvious mistakes in some beats of the “incipits” – even in printed works – and to correct them in the reproduction. A catalogue of his works arranged according to opus numbers, produced in 1992 by Mrs. Leonore Endreß in commemoration of Armin Kaufmann’s 90th birthday and edited by the Austrian National Library “Musikalische Dokumentation”, was an important basis for preparing further systematic catalogues. Incorrect details discovered by the author of this thesis in the course of his research have also been corrected. The biographical information was gained from a family chronicle dating back to 1684 that was kindly placed at my disposal by Mrs. Elisabeth Kaufmann-Troppina, daughter of Armin Kaufmann, as well as from documents and diaries. Conversations with members of the family also helped to clear up details of his curriculum vitae. A great number of concert programmes document the performances of his works. As far as they were available they have been listed chronologically. From these programmes it was also possible to compile a catalogue of performers. 1696 How contemporaries, especially experts, reacted to the works of Armin Kaufmann becomes visible in the great number of critical reviews which, however, have mostly been reduced to passages concerning Armin Kaufmann. Forming an opinion on these articles is left to the reader. Last but not least: abstracts of memorial addresses have been included in my thesi

Ek duniyā alag sī Narrative strategies and Adivasi representation in the short stories of Vinod Kumar

    No full text
This paper investigates the narrative strategies of representation used by the Indian author Vinod Kumar in his literary writing about the life and spaces of the Adivasi. The focal point of this study consists in the fact that the author is a non-Adivasi, thus placing him and his writing in the center of a very much debated issue of Hindi literature i.e. the polarity between the writing through sympathy (Hindi sahānubhūti) and the writing through personal experience (anubhūti). This study-case looks at how the author, being a dikū, an outsider describes the ‘other’ (i.e. the Adivasi). The results show that the author’s representation of the Adivasi, based on a solid empirical knowledge of his ‘other’, contains some elements of romanticism revealing both his outsideness and a strong empathy for the ‘other’.Masteruppsats i indologi 2019</p

    Peter Paul Ekka

    No full text
This article discusses some short stories by Peter Paul Ekka, an Adivasi author from Jharkhand. Initially, it aims to demonstrate how – through the use of romantic and stereotypical descriptions – the Adivasi characters emerge as ‘others’ in relation to non-Adivasis as well as to the author himself. This urges us to further discuss and problematise the Adivasi/non-Adivasi binary. Thus, the article challenges the notion of cultural ‘otherness’ based solely on cultural terms and, specifically, on membership in certain groups that arises in contemporary forms of identity politics and in relation to marginal/subaltern literatures. Finally, the article expands its critique by referring to some foundational texts of postcolonial theory that, despite their authors’ intentions, have been absorbed into the call for subjectivity and rigid readings of culture that underpin the kind of identity politics that is mentioned and criticised here

‘Offensive’ writing: Sex and prostitution in the works by Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar

This article considers some works by the Santhal author Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar in light of the fierce critiques they attracted. Against the accusation of pornographic and offensive writing, I maintain not only that the criticism Shekhar’s works received is unjustified (something that has also been claimed by others), but also that it is symptomatic of a mood with its roots in the West that has spread all over the world. I argue that behind this kind of criticism lies the imposition of identity politics on literary works on one side, and the contemporary concern with political correctness on the other. Further, I also show that despite the progressive agenda such a criticism wants to represent and defend, it ends up producing regressive implications. Shekhar’s case appears thus to be particularly enlightening in showing the limits of identity politics and political correctness in literary criticism
