A new look at the pathogenesis of asthma
Asthma is an inflammatory disorder of the conducting airways that has strong association with allergic sensitization. The disease is characterized by a polarized Th-2 (T-helper-2)-type T-cell response, but in general targeting this component of the disease with selective therapies has been disappointing and most therapy still relies on bronchodilators and corticosteroids rather than treating underlying disease mechanisms. With the disappointing outcomes of targeting individual Th-2 cytokines or manipulating T-cells, the time has come to re-evaluate the direction of research in this disease. A case is made that asthma has its origins in the airways themselves involving defective structural and functional behaviour of the epithelium in relation to environmental insults. Specifically, a defect in barrier function and an impaired innate immune response to viral infection may provide the substrate upon which allergic sensitization takes place. Once sensitized, the repeated allergen exposure will lead to disease persistence. These mechanisms could also be used to explain airway wall remodelling and the susceptibility of the asthmatic lung to exacerbations provoked by respiratory viruses, air pollution episodes and exposure to biologically active allergens. Variable activation of this epithelial-mesenchymal trophic unit could also lead to the emergence of different asthma phenotypes and a more targeted approach to the treatment of these. It also raises the possibility of developing treatments that increase the lung's resistance to the inhaled environment rather than concentrating all efforts on trying to suppress inflammation once it has become established.<br/

Superconducting properties in single crystals of the topological nodal semimetal PbTaSe2
We report electronic properties of superconductivity in single crystals of topological nodal-line semimetal PbTaSe2. Resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements were performed on high-quality single crystals. We observed large, temperature-dependent anisotropy in its upper critical field (H-c2). The upper critical field measured for H parallel to ab plane shows a sudden upward feature instead of saturation at low temperatures. The specific heat measurements in magnetic fields reveal a full superconducting gap with no gapless nodes.National Basic Research Program of China [2013CB921901, 2014CB239302]; Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation (Hasan) [GBMF4547]SCI(E)[email protected]
A conversation through the uniqueness of ordinary knowledge : a microhistorical inquiry into the family and social circle of Seyyid Hasan Nûrî Efendi through his diaries (1661-1665)
This paper aims to present a comprehensive analysis of the social world of Seyyid Hasan Nûrî Efendi, a Sünbülî sheikh known as the author of the first diary in Ottoman Turkish literature known as Sohbetnâme. His diaries, referred to as sâlnâme (yearbook) in his own terms, consist of his daily notes spanning the years 1072-1075 AH/1661-1665 AD. Hasan Efendi meticulously documented therein the names of individuals and places, offering a wealth of material that unveils his social network over this almost four-year period. While existing literature has hitherto underscored the extensive nature of his social circle, there lacks empirical analysis detailing the identities of Hasan Efendi's companions, acquaintances, and their affiliations. To address this gap, this study adopts a three-tiered approach, progressively unfolding an analysis from intimate relationships to more unconventional connections. The initial section delves into the author's closest relationships, encompassing family members and individuals in his immediate sphere. This realm of intimacy and privacy captures mundane daily activities and established routines, offering significant insights into the historical context of family dynamics and social frameworks of contemporary urban Muslim communities in the Ottoman capital. The subsequent section explores another integral facet of the diarist's world: his interactions with close friends, local people, and Sufi companions at the Kocamustafapasa Tekkesi. Hasan Efendi devoted considerable time to these individuals, engaging with them individually or within groups on a daily basis. Based on input about such connections in the diary, this section scrutinizes the diverse groups Hasan encountered regularly, whose scope ranges from close friends and local people to influential figures within the tekke. Among these associations, some were ordinary citizens, while others held positions of notable authority. The third and final part endeavors to decipher Hasan Efendi's encounters and connections across Istanbul, where boundaries of association were relatively ambiguous. This part aims to shed light on the diarist's interactions with dignitaries, thus providing insight into his broader network as well as his social status

Author Profiling Tracks at FIRE
[EN] Benchmarking activities are vital for fostering research and addressing new challenging problems. During the last 10 years of the FIRE initiative we have been involved in the organization of more than ten tracks, with the aim of the creation of new resources in several languages that were made available to the research community. This allowed to compare the new several approaches on the same datasets. In this chapter we will focus on the description of three author profiling tracks, on their data creation as well as the results analysis. The work on the author profiling data in Arabic was made possible by NPRP Grant #9-175-1-033 from the Qatar National Research Fund (a member of Qatar Foundation).
