Alf Nilsen-Børsskog — The Author Chosen by the Language

    No full text
This article discusses Alf Nilsen-Børsskog’s four-volume series of novels Elämän jatko [Continuation of life, 2004–2015], seen as the first literary works treating the Kven culture from a native perspective. Nilsen-Børsskog’s novels are analysed as constituting a “counterstory”, a term coined in the postcolonial cultural research paradigm to refer to self-representation. The Kvens have been considered a national minority in Norway since 1999, and their language has been an official minority language since 2005. The present author scrutinizes how Nilsen-Børsskog’s work differs from previous literary descriptions of this minority, often marked by the frequent use of stereotypes of the Kven language and culture

The Austrian dictionary composed by the Slovenian scho-lar Janez Žiga Valentin Popovič (1705-1774) in the third quarter of the 18th century was only published in 2004, and edited by Richard Reutner, who wrote an extensive introduction to it. The dictionary comprises many language-geographical data for the German language, excellent explanations and many comparisons with much information provided regarding Popovic's mother tongue. The author broad horizon is admirable, especially with regard to the German language area and the linguistic literature of that time.

This text address the work of Russian scholar Valentin N. Vološinov, author of the book Marxism and the Philosophy of Language. The objective is to demonstrate a set of characteristics that place Vološinov as a participant in the critique of science movement, which had its epicenter in Germany, between the years 1840 and 1900. To this end, in addition to a general reflection, which recovers the meaning of the term “criticism” most present in the academic environment of the time, this text considers two points of the much mentioned – and, apparently, somewhat misunderstood – opposition of the Russian thinker to the linguistics of Ferdinand de Saussure, as this linguistics is presented in the Course in General Linguistics. Finally, by way of provocation, this text outlines a few words about the proximity between the epistemological works of Valentin N. Vološinov and Wilhelm Dilthey. The aim of this research is to present and analyze the first novel by Soviet Russian author Valentin Rasputin, Money for Maria, originally published in 1967. The Portuguese translation of the object of study is accompanied by contextual notes, both historical and translational. To further explore the subject, a brief history of the collectivization of land in the USSR and the social and artistic conditions that allowed the flourishing of \"village prose\" is presented. In addition, some biographical data of the author and some aspects of his work that fit him in this artistic movement are pointed out. Finally, the various chronotopic layers of the novel and its dialogical character are analyzed

New York in collezione privata, 1626).The author analyses a painting by Leandro bassano, through a print of the late eighteenth century, and empahsizes the connections between the figuration used in Venetian concert painting and the language applied in the musical paintings by Caravaggio a nd his followers. Finally the analysis of a drawing found by the author, and tradinally attributed to Rutilio Manetti, opens up interesting questions in regard to the history of the paioonting Concert with Characteres and a Drinker by Valentin de Boulogne, now in private collection in New York

Learning to Speak Indigenous Languages with Compassionate Listening Practices

Indigenous language reclamation programs are considered an important way to reclaim indigenous identities and empower indigenous community members. Yet, without enough considerations for the participants, they could inhibit the language learning of those participants. The goal of this article is to empower Ryukyuan indigenous language learners using compassionate listening practices to support their learning. The author focuses on language reclamation activities targeting new speakers of the Yaeyaman language. The author analyzed interviews with new speakers (learners) of Yaeyaman and conducted videorecordings. This article identifies the following three issues: (1) linguistic purism, (2) linguistic in security, and (3) lack of ethical principles. These problems seem to hinder new speakers’ motivation to learn and speak their heritage languages. The author found that the emotions and feelings of new speakers are often overlooked and thus, suggests that new learners can be empowered by addressing their feelings through compassionate listen practices. Hence, we need to focus on the emotional support of language learners. The article proposes using compassionate listening practices to empower language learners who are embedded in social power struggles both from outside and inside the language community.https://doi.org/10.33063/diva-472014</p

Study of the role of interfaces in ultrafast demagnetization

The models explaining the ultrafast quenching of magnetization following femtosecond optical excitationcan be classified into two broad categories relying either on a local or a non-local transfer of angular momentum. In this PhD, I demonstrate how the soft X-ray magnetic reflectivity in a pump-probe geometry is sensitive to local and non-local processes. This technique allows to extract a structural and magnetic signals that reveal two distinct dynamics at different time scales. Until one picosecond, the asymmetry is quickly evolving while the average intensity stays more or less constant. After that, the asymmetry is slowly coming back to equilibrium while the average reflectivity changes periodically. The quantitative analysis of these signals by a program using a matrix formalism allows the extraction of the transient structural and magnetic profiles resolved in depth. The comparison of these experimental profiles with simulations using the local microscopic three temperature model, shows that (i) the time structure of the film exhibits a 2 Å expansion followed by a damped oscillation of the sample thickness due to the rapid temperature increase and influenced by magnetostriction; (ii) the transient magnetic profile is inhomogeneous and cannot be explained by local processes alone, which confirms the existence of magnetisation transport phenomena beyond the magnetic layer

Electron population dynamics in resonant non-linear x-ray absorption in nickel at a free-electron laser

Free-electron lasers provide bright, ultrashort, and monochromatic x-ray pulses, enabling novel spectroscopic measurements not only with femtosecond temporal resolution: The high fluence of their x-ray pulses can also easily enter the regime of the non-linear x-ray–matter interaction. Entering this regime necessitates a rigorous analysis and reliable prediction of the relevant non-linear processes for future experiment designs. Here, we show non-linear changes in the L3-edge absorption of metallic nickel thin films, measured with fluences up to 60 J/cm2. We present a simple but predictive rate model that quantitatively describes spectral changes based on the evolution of electronic populations within the pulse duration. Despite its simplicity, the model reaches good agreement with experimental results over more than three orders of magnitude in fluence, while providing a straightforward understanding of the interplay of physical processes driving the non-linear changes. Our findings provide important insights for the design and evaluation of future high-fluence free-electron laser experiments and contribute to the understanding of non-linear electron dynamics in x-ray absorption processes in solids at the femtosecond timescale.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft 10.13039/501100001659Helmholtz Association 10.13039/501100009318Swiss National Science Foundation 50110000171
