Objective Develop and internally validate risk models and a clinical risk score tool to predict incident radiographic knee osteoarthritis (RKOA) in middle-aged women. Methods We analysed 649 women in the Chingford 1000 Women study. The outcome was incident RKOA, defined as Kellgren/Lawrence grade 0-1 at baseline and ≥2 at year 5. We estimated predictors’ effects on the outcome using logistic regression models. Two models were generated. The clinical model considered patient characteristics, medication, biomarkers, and knee symptoms. The radiographic model considered the same factors, plus radiographic factors (e.g., angle between the acetabular roof and ilium’s vertical cortex (hip α-angle)). The models were internally validated. Model performance was assessed using calibration and discrimination (area under the receiver characteristic curve, AUC). Results The clinical model contained age, quadriceps circumference, and a cartilage degradation marker (CTX-II) as predictors (AUC = 0.692). The radiographic model contained older age, greater quadriceps circumference, knee pain, knee baseline Kellgren/Lawrence 1 (versus 0), greater hip α-angle, greater spinal bone mineral density, and contralateral RKOA at baseline as predictors (AUC = 0.797). Calibration tests showed good agreement between the observed and predicted incident RKOA. A clinical risk score tool was developed from the clinical model. Conclusion Two models predicting incident RKOA within 4 years were developed; including radiographic variables improved model performance. First-time predictor hip α-angle and contralateral RKOA suggest osteoarthritis origins beyond the knee. The clinical tool has the potential to help physicians identify patients at risk of RKOA in routine practice, but should be externally validated

La responsabilidad social corporativa como respuesta a la crisis en el entorno empresarial

Corporate Social Responsibility, according to Garriga and Melé and Porter and Kramer (2008), is a tool to generate value over time, by obtaining long-term competitive advantages for the company such as a good image, a differentiated position in the market, innovation of its methods and merchandise, cost reduction and selection of trained collaborators. In recent decades, the analysis and interest of corruption on its presence, influence and consequences in the business sphere has been increasing. Corruption is a social as well as political, legal, economic and ethical issue that disturbs and should concern both public institutions and private companies. It can be noted that there is still some indifference in the business environment, considering that corruption does not affect them directly, so they do not devote sufficient efforts to counteract it.La Responsabilidad Social Corporativa, según Garriga y Melé y Porter y Kramer (2008), es una herramienta para generar valor con el transcurso del tiempo, médiante la obtención de ventajas competitivas de larga duración para la empresa como una buena imagen, una posición diferenciada en el mercado, innovación sus métodos y mercancías, reducción de costos y selección de colaboradores capacitados. Hand drawing: why it still matters for architects in the digital age

    No full text
[EN] The text presents the Spanish translation of the lecture given by Professor Juhani Pallasmaa on February 17, 2024, at Carnegie Mellon University s School of Architecture, in a seminar on the importance of hand drawing for architects in the digital age. In the paper, Pallasmaa holistically addresses the fundamental significance of drawing in the field of architecture and highlights the attributes of hand drawing in relation to digital drawing, which the current technological paradigm has generalized globally. Pallasmaa proposes a redefinition of drawing by hand, as well as of its intrinsic values such as lack of precision, playfulness and the interaction of the senses. The author argues for a synthetic vision in architecture, and how it may be becoming distorted in the process of contemporary architectural production and design. Fil: Monasterio, Julio. The paper is concerned with the content of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the food supply chains. The objective is to build the content of CSR in the food chain with a stakeholder dialogue. The research project takes an action oriented approach and is based on case studies. The project draws on three different case food products and their supply chains: rye bread, broiler chicken products and margarine. The content of CSR is constructed in interaction between researchers, consumers, companies and their interest groups. The research project combines the compilation and analysis of extensive information sources, constructive technology assessment and stakeholder workshops. The paper presents how the research process is proceeding in a dialogue with researchers, representatives of case companies, consumers and other stakeholders and provides results on important CSR issues related to the case food products and their supply chains.Corporate social responsibility, supply chain, stakeholders, Agribusiness,

Resurfacing Slave Patrols Within "Modern" Police Subject Matter

iv, 67 p.This essay compares similarities in the relationship between slave catchers and slaves, pre and post Civil War, to the relationship between modern day law enforcement and African American communities. The author argue that there is not real difference between the two structures only an evolution from one to the other. This research was conducted, specifically, in West Englewood area neighborhood, located in Chicago's Southside. The author interviewed members of the community to demonstrate the largely negative impacts and viewpoints law enforcement has essentially created via police interaction with the community. The essay expounds on some essential terms such as blackness, symbolic violence, structural violence, and systemic violence to create the link between these two surveillance. While presenting these terminologies, the author also brings to the forefront current narratives, systems, structures, ideologies, and symbols that embody them. In doing so, the essay draws connections that identify blackness with dehumanization, criminalization, and as a result, hyper policing of black communities

Interlocking directorates in Spanish banking in the twentieth century

    No full text
Spanish banking historiography asserts that the largest banks performed in the twentieth century as though they constituted a monopoly. One of their main coordination schemes would have been a network of interlocking bank directors that would include most of the financial firms. Evidence available for the 1920s and 1960s seems to confirm the veracity of this hypothesis. In this paper, more systematic evidence is presented to cover the whole twentieth century with the aim of checking whether these networks persisted over the entire period or they were by-products of temporary situations. Our results show that no general network remained for more than a decade. Therefore, it should be ruled out that interlocking directorates worked as a coordination device of an alleged banking cartel.Monopolization strategies, Interlocking directorates, Spanish banking

Chapter 21 of the Byzantine work known as The Symbolic Garden refers to an unidentified plant (the smilax) which symbolizes science. The author has taken this symbol from patristic literature (Athanasius of Alexandria and other patristic texts). On the other hand, a passage (p. 71, 17-73, 1) until now misinterpreted can be understood if confronted with several texts by John Damascenus and Nicetas Stethatos, who both voice the same opinions about science
