ADRIAN POP - IN SEARCH OF A LONG LOST SMILE
An anniversary, especially in the case of a generation colleague, the renowned composer Adrian Pop, generates the remembrance of a long series of musical events that have become notorious, with works included in the national and international concert repertoire. The avoidance of nostalgic memories made that a stage miniature be chosen for the present paper, an incursion of the author into the naive world of childhood reading. The result was a modern, glamorous musical transposition of a sequence with Max and Moritz, the playful heroes created by the famous humorist and cartoonist Wilhelm Busch in the middle of the 19th century. The musical act Onkel Fritz by Adrian Pop was first performed in Cluj in 2016, on October 22, on the occasion of his previous anniversary, within the Cluj Musical Autumn Festival. The graceful performers of the act, presented under the title “Anniversaries at the Festival, Adrian Pop compositional portrait”, were soprano Mihaela Maxim, in the role of Max and pianist Eva Butean, in the role of Moritz. How did composer Adrian Pop manage to musically enliven a 150 years old humorous story? The author of the following text will try to answer this question.

This paper proposes to conduct an analysis of The Magic Mountain (1924) and Doctor Faustus (1947), both novels written by the German author Thomas Mann. The analysis deals with the differences in the formative process (Bildung) of the central characters of the two works, Hans Castorp and Adrian Leverkühn, and focuses precisely on what they have as opposites and what encompasses them in different novel categories: while The Magic Mountain fits into a coming-of-age novel (Bildungsroman), Doctor Faustus belongs to the category of a Faustian novel and can be seen equally as an anti-Bildungsroman. Thus, while in The Magic Mountain the reader witnesses a true process of maturation and formation, in Doctor Faustus the opposite can be observed through the realization of the Faustic pact and the rupture (Durchbruch), making it impossible for Adrian to have a formative process based on mistakes and successes. In this way, we propose to demonstrate not only what is distinctive about the trajectories of the two characters, but also how the pact made by Adrian is constructed with several layers of meaning and articulates themes such as theology, music, and politics. Based on this, we analyze how Adrian’s rupture can also symbolize the rupture that Germany had in its history when it went down the path of National Socialism (itself a pact with drastic consequences for the country
The Federal Reserve's Primary Dealer Credit Facility
As liquidity conditions in the "repo market"--the market where broker-dealers obtain financing for their securities--deteriorated following the near-bankruptcy of Bear Stearns in March 2008, the Federal Reserve took the step of creating a special facility to provide overnight loans to dealers that have a trading relationship with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Six months later, in the wake of new strains in the repo market, the Fed expanded the facility by broadening the types of collateral accepted for loans. Both initiatives were designed to help restore the orderly functioning of the market and to prevent the spillover of distress to other financial firms.Federal Reserve Bank of New York ; Loans ; Financial crises ; Brokers
This is a master's dissertation in Visual Arts whose purpose is to debate authorship and appropriation in contemporary art, with a focus on the production of two North American artists: Adrian Piper and Zoe Leonard. In order to analyze their artistic practices, we begin the journey analyzing appropriation in modern art from the relations of representation and power, and then moving forward in the study of appropriation in allegorical and in site-specific procedures in contemporary times, without losing sight of institutional criticism and identity issues that are intertwined in the artistic processes analyzed. At the same time, we analyze the path of authorship in contemporary times, taking as a guideline the notions brought by Marcel Duchamp in the “creative act”, in “the death of the author”, by Roland Barthes and in the “author as a function”, by Michel Foucault and the voice of the women, from Nelly Richard’s feminist writings and Dijamila Ribeiro’s place of speech of black feminism. When entering the research cut, we started to analyze some works of the artists Adrian Piper and Zoe Leonard, who update questions of appropriation and authorship in their artistic practices and debate relevant issues when making contemporary artTrata-se de dissertação de Mestrado em Artes Visuais cujo objetivo é discutir a autoria e a apropriação na arte contemporânea, com enfoque na produção de duas artistas norte-americanas: Adrian Piper e Zoe Leonard.
Tender criticism – the tender metaphysics of Adrian Gleń
The sketch is an attempt to grasp the interpretation of the critical discourse of Adrian Gleń – the poet of “Topos”, professor at the Institute of Literary Studies
at the University of Opole, author of numerous interpretations and critical discussions of recent poetry. The critic has articulated it both in Istnienie i literaturze
[Existence and Literature] (Sopot 2010), Czułości [Tenderness] (Sopot 2014), and especially in his latest volume of essays on contemporary literary criticism, Krytyka i metafizyka [Criticism and Metaphysics] (Sopot 2017). In the latter, the author clearly crystallises his aim – to indicate the place of criticism in contemporary culture, the reasons for the decline of its authority, but also its prospects. A recipe for bringing contemporary criticism out of its crisis may be – as proposed by Adrian Gleń – “sensitive criticism”, which treats poetry as a “metaphysical task” and requires the critic to adopt the attitude of a philosopher-anthropologist-hermeneutic, as well as a mystic.MAŁGORZATA BURZKA-JANIK, dr, literaturoznawczyni, polonistka, adiunkt na Uniwersytecie Opolskim; współpracownik Katedry Badań Filologicznych „Wschód – Zachód” na Wydziale Filologicznym Uniwersytetu w Białymstoku; prezes opolskiego Oddziału Towarzystwa Literackiego im. O Riso de Fausto
This article constitutes an inquiry into one of the most subtle themes in Thomas Mann's novel 'Doctor Faustus' – namely, Adrian Leverkühn’s laughter. Its aim is to establish a connection between a specific element within the novel (Adrian's laughter) and the overarching theme of artistic creation in the modern age. Not only does the author explicitly link the novel to the broader concept of artistic creation, which is its central concern, but the presence of Theodor Adorno, who was both a reader and critic of the work further underscores this connection. Consequently, the question that guides this study is the following: In what way does Adrian's laughter intersect with his own artistic creation? Throughout this article, we make associations with Stanley Cavell's ideas on acknowledgment and the skepticism which refers to its failure. Theorists such as Bergson, Baudelaire, and Morreall provide the foundation for theories of laughter. What’s more, in the essay, the presence of laughter in other Faustian interpretations written in the first half of the twentieth century will also be comparatively addressed. Thus, in this study, Adrian's unique position in the Faustian landscape is shown to be connected to the eruption of laughter, which, far from being a minor detail, proves to be crucial for understanding his artistic production.O presente artigo é uma investigação sobre “uma das menores recorrências” do romance Doutor Fausto de Thomas Mann, a saber: o riso de Adrian Leverkühn.
South African travel writing and bias
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 92-96).This thesis spotlights the travel and leisure magazine industry within South Africa. It contends that the travel writing genre is susceptible to a number of biases, both past and present, which ultimately affect the way its overall content is produced and presented to the public. This work was substantiated through a set of qualitative interviews with key professionals within the South African travel and leisure magazine industry, as well as through a theme- based content analysis of a number of local travel writing publications. This study adds to a rather extensive line of research written on the topic of travel writing regarding a number of older criticisms of bias including 'othering', escapism, and gendering. However, it also focuses on a number of more modem biases such as direct advertising, advertorial usage, as well as the acceptance of 'freebies' and barter agreements, none of which has been given much attention in previous research. The sheer existence of these and other biases within the modem South African travel and leisure magazine industry exhibits an absolute necessity of examination into such a topic, especially given the importance and overall influence that the travel writing industry has on a country's economic standing and overall image
Raport o stanie dyskursu krytycznoliterackiego w Polsce
Adrian GleńDepartment of Contemporary Literature and Literary TheoryUniversity of Opole, PolandA Report on the Condition of the Critical Discourse in PolandAbstract:The article is an attempt to describe the condition of the discourse of literary criticism as practiced in Poland. The author investigates the process of gradual impoverishment and despecification of the language of literary criticism, which reveals itself via diverse socio-literary phenomena, such as the demand for shortenings and evaluative character of literary criticism, the places where literary criticism appears, the disappearance of the quality of the dialogue, and the way literary criticism functions in the Polish contemporary publishing market. A separate part of these considerations is devoted to the overview of the critics’ approaches to the condition of the discourse of literary criticism and the discussion of the postulate of the “privatization” of literary criticism. Keywords: literary criticism, Poland, critical discourse, scholarly publishing, academic dialogRaport o stanie dyskursu krytycznoliterackiego w PolsceTekst stanowi próbę opisu stanu dyskursu krytycznoliterackiego w Polsce. On an attempt at constructing a meta-psychology.
Chodziło mu o stworzenie metateoretycznej bazy dla możliwie wszystkich z natury nieporównywalnych do siebie ujęć psychologicznych w celu umożliwienia im owocnego dialogu. The recently deceased Adrian van Kaam CSSp is considered to be one of the founders of phenomenologico-existential approach in psychology. His works stand at the beginning of humanist and existential psychology in the United States. Dialogue between psychology and philosophy, one of his postulates, is a common characteristic of this period in the development of psychology. While similar to V. Frankl’s multi-dimensional anthropology, Van Kaam’s research project appears to have been much more ambitious. His aim was to construct a meta-theoretical foundation for all the essentially different psychological currents in order to enable fruitful dialogue among them. However, Van Kaam’s proposal was not welcomed enthusiastically by the psychological community, and the author himself remains unknown to the general public, being only occasionally mentioned in manuals of the history of psychology. This paper is an attempt to provide the Polish audience with a more exhaustive presentation of van Kaam’s scientific heritage in the fields of psychological theory, psychotherapy, and scientific spirituality as well as to explain why his research has not become an integral part of the history of psychology
Sectoral allocation by gender of Latin American workers over the liberalization period of the 1990s
The recent restructuring of Latin American economies has renewed interest in the effects of trade liberalization, on labor markets, and on the gender division of labor. The author does not attempt to establish casuality between economic reforms, and the types of jobs that men and women hold. Instead, she provides a detailed description of the trends in male, and female formal, and informal sector participation during the economic reform period in Argentina, Brazil, and Costa Rica. The author first compares the gender composition of the formal, informal wage, and self-employment sectors in a year before reforms (1988 for Argentina, 1989 for Brazil, and Costa Rica), and a year after reforms implementation (1997 for Argentina, 1995 for Brazil and Costa Rica). Although women continued to be more likely than men to work in the informal wage sector, there is no trend of"masculinization"or"feminization"of the informal sector, or any other. Instead, in Argentina men have overtaken women as the most prevalent workers in the informal wage sector, while in Brazil, the opposite has occurred (as men move into self-employment). In Costa Rica there have been no statistical, observable changes. The author then considers the distribution across sectors within each gender group, to identify whether men, and women are more likely to select different sectors in the post-reform period relative to the pre-reform period. Among both men, and women in all three countries (except Brazilian men), workers have become more likely to hold informal wage jobs, and less likely to hold formal sector jobs. Trends in human capital accumulation explain these changes for both men, and women, while changes in gender roles, primarily in homecare and marriage, do not seem to have an effect.Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Labor Policies,Population&Development,Public Health Promotion,Environmental Economics&Policies,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Environmental Economics&Policies,Population&Development,Banks&Banking Reform,Work&Working Conditions
