Abstract : This research focuses on the historical process of the institution of private primary schools in the first half of the nineteenth century, in the Maranhão State; however, focuses in particular the city of Sao Luís, capital of the province. The title of this work corroborates the historical production on this topic that has been sidelined, considering its lack in relation to the other as the history of pedagogical ideas, educational reform, the history of the teaching at the secondary and higher education, particularly in the context of Brazilian Empire. The chronological range indicated is demarcated by two dates. The first, in 1834, the year he was given the approval of Law No. 16 of August 12, 1834, in which there were made some changes and additions to the Constitution of the Empire of 1824. Among the changes made under this law, established have been some significant changes, particularly as referred to Chapter V of the Constitution, which abolished the General Councils of provinces and had created in its place the provincial legislatures empowered to legislate on economics, justice, and, among other themes, education. The year of 1854 marks the passage of the Law of Freedom of Schooling, complementing the Additional Act of 1834. It consolidates the expansion of the private sector as a substitute of the State role in Education, accentuating its expansion. This date also corresponds to the time of the creation of the second Regulation of public education in the province of Maranhão, aimed at elementary and secondary education in the province was reorganized, and it means the first time that appear the criteria for the operation of private schools. It s advised that, although linked to the broader field of History of Education, this research tried to address the theoretical and methodological assumptions of so-called History of School Institutions. Then it is to identify and discuss the categories "creation and implementation of school development and school", proposed by Nosella and Buffa (2008, 2009). The study is based on other authors as Santos (2010, 2009) Castro (2010, 2009); Motta (2003); Ng (1988); Werebe (1995); Lima (2008); Amaral (2003); Azevedo (1963); Cardoso (2004); Junior Gatti (2002) and Vechia (1998). The research was based on the documental sources located at the Public Archives of the State of Maranhão andin the State Public Library Benedito Leite. The analysis was based on the reports of the presidents of the province of Maranhão; in Educational Legislation gathered and published (2009); the press, and other sources such as Viveiros (1953), Abranches (1941) and Gutierrez (1908). The results point to the effective establishment of these schools, their quantitative and qualitative increase in the scenery of the Brazilian Northeast, as well as for the generation of historical conditions for its genesis, operation and fulfillment of social objectives of serving the population of various social groups, demonstrating its significant contribution to the education of a portion of Maranhão during the focused period. It indicates a dialectical relationship between the private sector and the public, particularly as we attempt to the economic, political and cultural issues, as well as to the statutes according togradually the process the institution of private primary school in the province of Maranhão happened in the period
Not only to current students but also to those who have graduated in Library Studies longer ago, it is increasingly difficult to understand the connections between the profession they have chosen and the academic system of disciplines and fields. This difficulty becomes worse when they realise that the continuing education opportunities they look for to strengthen their chances in a labour market that is progressively competitive have to be found within this academic system. The goal of the article is to offer some insights to understand this complex issue. To start with, it poses three questions: (1) Who are the information professionals? (2) What do the information professionals do? (3) How should information professionals be educated and trained? Discussing these three points the author concludes that in order to offer a professional education that stays fine-tuned with the market and at the same time stimulates an enriching relationship between Library and Information Studies we should first encourage the students to become managers of their own learning process and to assume active roles in building their own knowledge. Secondly, we should influence them to exercise the scientific research process more frequently. If they apply the research method as a natural way of thinking they will quickly grow as individuals and professionals, developing and improving their skills and judgement. As these two initiatives grow stronger a solid bridge between the professional and the academic worlds of the field will be built
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
